We invest to ensure that trustees fulfil their mandates and fiduciary duties.

Research conducted by Metropolitan Retirement Administrators (MRA) shows that more than two-thirds of all possible risks facing a retirement fund are out of the trustee’s hands and lie with service providers.

We at MRA are acutely aware that most of those risks relate to administration. Any risk to a retirement fund could have a direct impact on members’ replacement ratios and thus we have worked tirelessly to address those risks from our side. After becoming the first retirement administrator in SA to successfully complete an ISAE 3 000, MRA recently became one of the first administrators in the world to successfully complete the ISAE 3402 review.

Through our various technological investments, which have largely lead to us achieving the latter, we’re able to ensure that trustees fulfil their mandates and fiduciary duties in light of the tougher regulation regime.

MRA Benchmark Administration platform truly sets the benchmark in retirement fund administration. In 2007 Metropolitan Retirement Administrators launched SA’s first fully-locally developed retirement administration platform that is not only SA’s leading platform by capability but can also reduce the cost of administration and compliance. The Benchmark Retirement Administration platform truly sets the benchmark in administration solutions for large and mega funds in South Africa’s retirement industry. While technology gives trustees access to crucial fund information in real time at a click of a button, our locally developed platform is designed to seamlessly incorporate and comply with local pension fund regulation. Giving trustees access to information in real time allows them to review and make the right decisions about managing members’ funds, ultimately to the benefit of the members.

Technology also ensures that members remain at the heart of what we do. Through our highly automated administration platform, benefit payments, claims and queries are addressed and resolved in rapid time. This is due to numerous technological innovations like intelligent forms and optical character recognition software that allows us to catalogue and access all information relevant from day one and execute orders almost immediately. Getting things right the first time is key to what we do and crucial for keeping retirement fund costs down.

Businesses in financial distress have for many years been unable to establish a platform from which to negotiate with their creditors. This made it difficult for businesses to restructure their affairs because there was no way to create a moratorium of legal actions against them pending the formulation of a rescue plan to submit to their creditors.

Fortunately this has now changed!

The Companies Act 71 of 2008 came into Law on 1st May 2011 and has presented many opportunities for companies in distress to create better outcomes by restructuring their affairs by way of the business rescue. We are able to assist companies to rescue their businesses. Even those who wish to wind up their affairs but who are loath to be subjected to the undue delay in formal processes have alternatives that we are able to assist with!

Our professional staff, with collective experience of over 60 years, regularly assists financially distressed businesses and individuals in exploring business rescue and turnaround strategies.

Despite the past challenges in saving businesses under the previous legal environment we have in the past succeeded in many instances.

We have been able to “rescue” a major retail chain, have restructured the affairs of many companies without them closing their doors and have successfully been able to assist businesses to provide a better return for their creditors than in an immediate liquidation.

Our international network with restructuring and insolvency professionals from all over the world enables us to be at the forefront of the latest trends in restructuring businesses’ financial affairs. We attend regular conferences on this topic all over the world and Hans Klopper and Dawie van der Merwe recently attended the INSOL conference in Singapore and our contribution at the international forums is to promote the efficiency of South African business rescue Laws.

Coombe & Associates Incorporated is a law firm, duly incorporated in terms of The Companies Act, 1973 and consists of attorneys specialising in collection of debt through a legal process.

Our established client base consists of 59 of the largest credit providers within the South African financial market.

We currently have offices in seven of the nine provinces in South Africa. This competitive advantage allows us access to a number of courts in the country.

We at Coombe and Associates Incorporated believe debts should be paid, not only as a matter of principle, but also as a pillar of healthy commerce. When debtors abuse the system by failing to repay loans and by hiding assets, creditors are unfairly punished. At the same time, as illustrated in the process below, we regard the reinstatement of the debtor’s credit-worthiness as equally important.

Time Management and ProductivityTIME MANAGEMENT is defined as the act or process of exercising conscious control over the amount of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase efficiency and productivity. Time management may be aided by a range of skills, tools and techniques used to manage time when accomplishing specific, tasks, projects and goals.

Time management is compulsory in any project development in both the business and personal arenas. It determines the project completion time and scope. In recent years many authors have discussed time management and set out a guideline of the steps involved to achieve maximum productivity by being able to manage your time responsibly.

• Get organised

• Protect your time

• Set gravitational goals

• Stay focused on your goals

• Prioritise – this is key to staying on track and will allow you to measure your progress. Perform tasks in order ranging from the most urgent to the least.

• Get more out of your time by utilising whatever tools are available to get you to achieve your goal

• Break down tasks into simple achievable goals

• Task lists are great – do not however fall into the rut of writing endless lists that take up more time than necessary. For all its worth this is actually a huge waste of time.

• Drop unimportant tasks – if it is not important don’t waste time and energy on it

Get into a routine of planning your work and your day. Start your day at least 15 minutes early to sit down and plan. Planning ahead and being aware of deadlines and expectations alleviate unnecessary stressful situations. Have you ever noticed how some people always seem to be so busy yet cannot show much results for their efforts? Monitor your time well and plan to succeed.

“Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.” Paul J. Meyer

Page 42: Corporate Essentials 2012

Optimal business performance demands input cost minimization and output benefit maximization. Human capital is an essential input cost that presents unavoidable but manageable threats to company productivity and concomitant financial performance.

Soma Initiative (Pty) Ltd, as market leaders in Absentee, Disability and Productivity Management, advocates that a company’s workforce is the key element of its success and prosperity and that management of the employee is undoubtedly and unequivocally the ultimate value driver ...

As an expert and professional Health Risk Manager with in excess of 25 years’ experience, Soma Initiative (Pty) Ltd is a Level 2 BBBEE contributor with nationally distributed offices and in excess of 40 professionally qualified staff. The company operates in both the Public and Private sectors being an appointed Health Risk Manager to the South African Government at both National and Provincial level having built its business and national reputation on a simple yet essential principle: top services backed by top knowledge, expertise and technology.

Soma Initiative (Pty) Ltd manages those human capital-related areas fundamental to company performance:

1) Absentee and Sick Leave Management Treating the problem and the cause

• Real-time absentee control transforming the cost of absenteeism into significant financial gain • Web- or non-web based, in-house, or outsourced to the Soma Initiative • A cutting-edge ‘Web-based Absentee Management Program’ at low cost • Medical Certificate management – the validity thereof, duration of absence in relation to the diagnosis, patterns of absence, liaison with treating doctors • Proactive trend and absentee case management • Strategic workforce management consulting

Focussed, goal-directed absence management presents a significant opportunity to boost organisational performance and

“The workforce is everything”... Employees essentially drive output and it is them that

differentiate one enterprise from another ...

... Human Capital therefore holds the key to any enterprise’s success or failure... the so-called “profit lever” ...

... Managing this “profit lever” effectively is vital to business performance ...

productivity, while maintaining optimal employee health. Effective employee management demands a proactive versus reactive approach to the identification of individuals requiring intervention.

2) Disability and/or Ill Health Retirement Assessment Protecting the business and the workforce • Disability and Incapacity assessment and management for both Employers and Benefit Funds • Assisting Trustees/Employers in determining the true extent of an employee’s functional limitations and associated occupational impairment • Guiding Trustees and Employers in the validation or repudiation of disability claims • Incapacity management • Functional Capacity Evaluation • Work-site analysis; job evaluation • Real-time, web-based administration

Providing independent, factual, unbiased and fair disability assessment reports on the validity or otherwise of disability claims. Such assessments produce objective, accurate, appropriate and legally robust disability claim recommendations. Assessment is complex and not merely based on medical reporting but comprises a multi-disciplinary assessment process with legal, ethical, and statutory components.

3) Disability underwriting Pre-empting and preventing undue risk • Health Risk Assessment protocol design • Death/disability risk profiling • Premium, employee and retirement benefit determination

Soma Initiative (Pty) Ltd assists self-insured funds and schemes in evaluating insurable risk and applying appropriate underwriting limitations. This proactive risk determination approach is far more beneficial than retrospective claims evaluation in controlling costs and safeguarding retirement assets.

4) Organisational Productivity Analysis Affecting effectiveness over efficiency

• Situational analyses of processes and methodologies, manual and automated • Intervention management • Operational effectiveness and efficiency consulting

Productivity analysis relating to human capital is designed to ascertain the root causes of compromised employee well-being and associated poor productivity. Once these fundamentals are determined, appropriate, goal-directed intervention is proposed in order to guide future strategic intervention.

5) Labour Relations consulting Managing the minefield of human capital • Assisting employers in managing workplace difference; judging quality and effectiveness of staff.

The Human Capital Engine (THCE) was founded in 2001 by Prof Jackie Naudé, Ms Thandi Chaane and Ms Linda Thango. The company’s approach to organisational transformation is based on sound theoretical and methodological research as well as the experiences learnt from our work in over 30 organisations. We recognise that all organisations are unique and as such customise our implementation process around the realities and requirements of the client. This is because, for THCE, transformation is about the realisation of the client’s business imperatives and not only about compliance. Processes are facilitated by a diverse team of highly qualified individuals.

As THCE’s MD, Prof Jackie Naudé, explains:”Transformation is a journey where we all change our mindsets, attitudes and behaviours in order to build new relationships and to create business excellence”.

We also provide a service of creating and designing customised training and development solutions to suit your exclusive needs or those of your organisation. No organisation is one and the same and each may experience distinct issues during different times of change. Change is a constant within organisations and the ways in which change presents itself varies entirely.

Organisational leaders and managers are faced with overseeing differing types of change. In order for leaders, managers, executives and HR practitioners to lead and manage change effectively and successfully, they need to be equipped with the relevant skills and knowledge to assist them in doing so.

From organisation development foundation programmes to advanced organisation design & leadership, the Academy for Organisational Change can deliver the training solutions you need, at a location you choose, in a manner that suits you!

It’s impossible to explain what we do. Seriously! It’s so ridiculously hard that it took us years to get it right.

In fact we are still learning and perfecting our craft. Like the carpenters and swordsmen, sushi chefs and chess players, we continue to improve. We have been improving our craft for the last 11 years and will continue to refine for the time we have left.

We are software craftsmen (and craftswomen of course, can I say craftspeople?). We practice the craft of software.

We have delivered solutions in the following areas:

• Financial Rules Engines

• Fantasy Gaming Leagues

• Custom Business Intelligence Systems

• Online rewards and retail programmes

• Bulk Credit Application Management Systems

• Reporting Systems

• Trade Consolidation

For seriously good quality, you know what to do.

KZN Clearing and Forwarding Agents was established in 2000.

Following many years in the industry working for other large Clearing / Forwarding and Shipping companies the founders saw the need for a personalised and fast turn-around agency, particularly in their specialist field, the motor vehicle industry.

The company has grown rapidly since inception and, in addition to clearing vehicles and other general cargo for their clients in South Africa; we also service the neighbouring countries surrounding South Africa, by providing a much needed service to clients wanting to import their own vehicles into their countries.

In addition to the clearing and forwarding services, KZN Clearing has its own sole, independently contracted transport company which takes care of all the deliveries of motor vehicles.

Our transport fleet consists of low bed carriers to transport heavy loads from low loaders to carry coaches and buses, car carriers for standard family vehicles and van transporters for large volume vans.

NGL Logistic Solutions was formed in March 2007. The company model came from the idea that there are areas in the transport and logistics sectors that are not always covered by the existing industry players and if they are, there is no real focus initiated by those companies. With this in mind we created a business aimed at targeting these niche areas within these sectors, then on a client to client basis offer a solution to that specific client’s needs. Each client within our business is treated as a new business and their solutions are tailor-made to them. The staffing, resources and solutions are implemented and run on its own, never crossing over any other client.

We are a contract logistics company. We will find a solution and then implement, run and seamlessly perform as your logistics arm.

Brand Management is a continuum that starts with the birth of brands and ends with their maturity. DonValley offers brand management services ranging from brand strategy assessment, brand strategy development and other below-and-through-the-line interventions aimed at helping brands create and sustain effective dialogues with their chosen target audiences. Public & Media Relations, Marketing and Strategic Communications are examples of such interventions.

Each brand is unique and all brands operate in increasingly cluttered and competitive environments. Audience attention spans are increasingly shorter and the media environment similarly complex.

Our team studies each brand’s raison d’être and business strategy, the audiences that it aims to reach and its operational environments, before proposing tools - with a variety of media platforms at the core – to ensure that effective dialogues are established and maintained.

You see, Flash Digital is small enough to give you attention to detail that you very rarely get from big companies – and big enough to execute national campaigns.

WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR?

We work with brands big and small - from start-up businesses that need help coordinating their marketing collateral to national agencies that need brand custodians with fast turnaround time. We are about seeing results and return on investment, because money doesn’t grow on trees. We’ll help you consolidate all your marketing activities into a focused, driven marketing engine that strives to grow your business.

CSI AFRICA was established in 2001 with the specific purpose of protecting corporate assets by doing polygraph tests, background screening and criminal record checks on prospective employees.

Given South Africa’s propensity for criminal activity, we wanted to ensure that the company book keeper or chief accountant did not have previous convictions for fraud and that the teacher hired by a school’s governing body did not have a previous record for child molestation. We also aimed to assist the innocent and expose the guilty with forensic investigations.

CSI AFRICA has become an indispensable part of the private foren-sic landscape in South Africa providing a range of forensic services to small, medium and large business conglomerates. It has worked for a number of JSE listed companies with excellent outcomes.

CSI AFRICA provides the following services to their clients: • Polygraph tests • Fingerprint investigations • Background Screenings • Expungement of Criminal Records

Evergreen Financial Consultants provide management support and business advisory services to financially distressed and underperforming businesses.

With the advent of Chapter 6 in the new Companies Act No. 71 of 2008, Companies and CC’s experiencing financial distress have an alternative remedy to liquidation – Business Rescue.

Business Rescue provides a platform for the rehabilitation of viable businesses through the appointment of a Business Rescue Practitioner (“BRP”). The BRP prepares and presents a plan to affected parties which demonstrates a better return to creditors as compared to liquidation. This plan is then voted upon.

Evergreen Financial Consultants are able to take BRP appointmentsand advise companies regarding business rescue and the alternatives available to ensure effective turnaround and restoration of profitability.
