Introduction
GIZ’s corporate design (CD) is a set of design standards that ensures the company projects a pro-fessionalandconsistentimage.Itgivesthecompanyadistinctivevisualprofileandencapsulatesthe various elements of the company’s external presentation. For example, the corporate design ensuresthatGIZpublicationsareimmediatelyrecognisableassuchatfirstglance.
When and where to use the corporate design
The corporate design is binding, and forms part of GIZ’s Orientation and Rules (O+R). Its use is man-datory for all materials produced by the company that serve the purpose of personnel recruitment or the acquisition of new clients or commissioning parties, as well as for business reports and GIZ’s own image materials (country brochures). These include publications and electronic presentations, promotional items, business stationery and emails, but also cooperation brochures published according to the GIZ corporate design prin-ciples by mutual agreement with its partners.
The use of corporate design is not mandatory for publications by programmes/projects that are mainly financed by BMZ/the Federal Foreign Office. More details on this are given on the next page.
Similarly, the use of GIZ’s corporate design is not mandatory for project publications nor for joint publications that are published using the partner’s corporate design; the same is true of publica-tions where GIZ is one partner/sponsor among others. However, wherever the GIZ logo is used, the guidelines for the logo must be observed.
Updating the GIZ Corporate Design Manual
The GIZ Corporate Design Manual is regularly updated and is available online on the intranet under Intranet > Services > Communications > Corporate Design and on the internet (giz.de/cdc).
The authoritative version is always the latest online version. Please make sure that you are loo-king at the updated version before using it to produce a publication. You can see from the table of contents which chapters have been most recently updated.
Advice and contactIf you have any questions about corporate design, contact our advisory portal for help. Either send an email to [email protected], or telephone +49-228-4460 4040 (Mo–Fr, 9:00 to 17:00 CET).

Please note that different regulations apply to CIM, AgenZ and other German public-sector clients.

AgenZ also has its own guidelines. For more information, please contact [email protected]
Other German public-sector clients:
There are currently no binding rules for foreign publications concerning business with other German public-sector clients. When you are cooperating with other German federal ministries, we recommend the following approach:
 InformtheOfficeforPublicSectorClientsinBerlinandtheCorporateDesignTeam ([email protected])
Suggest to the commissioning party/client that you use the cooperation logo together with the GIZ logo in order to ensure the consistent external presentation of all German public-sector clients.
This proposal must then be agreed with the embassy in the partner country and the relevant ministry.
If the proposal is rejected, you can consider the following compromise:
Use the logo of the appropriate ministry, the new cooperation logo – with the agreement of the client – and the GIZ logo. At present, use of the cooperation logo is only binding for business with BMZ/the Federal Foreign Office, so it may be the case that other ministries will not join in with this initiative.
The ministry’s logo must always be preceded by a particular phrase. The Corporate Design Team can advise you on which phrase to use in individual cases.
This is another instance where you need to be tactful and diplomatic. If in doubt, accommodate the client’s wishes and show some restraint in presenting GIZ. And don’t forget to name the client!
For publications used in Germany, other rules apply. You can find information on this in the Corporate Design Center at: www.giz.de/cdc.
Other business areas/special cases
Notes on joint development cooperation publications:
We contribute actively to combined development cooperation publications and are keen to pre-sentourselvesjointlywithotherdevelopmentorganisations.Here,economiccooperationofficersmust assume responsibility for the publication and its coordination.
In the case of priority sectors in a single country, joint development cooperation brochures should be the rule.
We must ensure that our clients are also mentioned in the GIZ sections of joint development cooperation brochures.

Overviewofhowtousethevariousdesignspecifications
Choosing the correct corporate design depends on two factors: how the project is financed, and where the publication will be used. The table below gives an overview of which design must be used when.
Note on factsheets used in Germany and abroadFactsheets that are used both in Germany and abroad must be produced in the relevant design, in other words in the BMZ design for Germany and in the German Government’s design for abroad.
Note on folders with factsheets from various projects/programmesIf you produce a number of factsheets with different financing and you would like to put these together in a single folder, you should choose the appropriate specifications for each factsheet depending on how it is financed, and use GIZ corporate design as the overarching design for the folder.

New German cooperation logo for programmes/pro-jects outside Germany
The new standard German cooperation logo is intended to help present the German Government’s extensive and diverse commitments abroad in a way that is both consistent and easier to recognise. Since the logo was introduced in January 2013, new binding design guidelines have applied to how the German Government and the state-owned implementing organisations of German international cooperation are presented to the outside world. These mainly concern the use of the logo, but also refer to the overall corporate design. This means that publications and other measures abroad appear in the German Government’s corporate design.
The logo must be used on printed matter and also on all other forms of external presentation if they relate to projects/programmes that are largely funded from the departmental budgets of the Federal Foreign Office (AA) and/or BMZ. The same applies to projects/pro-grammes funded by other ministries that join this initiative.
All the relevant information is available on the intranet: Services > Communications > Corporate design and from the Corporate Design Center: Corporate Design – German Federal Government > PR abroad (http://www.giz.de/cdc/en/html/2346.html)
Positioning of the GIZ logo alongside the German cooperation logo
The GIZ logo is positioned either to the right of or below the German cooperation logo, always with additional wording in the official lan-guage of the country (to the left of or above the logo).
You can download the GIZ logo including the additional wording from the CDC. It is permissible to produce other wording in different lan-guages, provided the content is accurate (Implemented by/Published by/Supported by).
The French wording ‘mise en oeuvre’ may be used.
Please note the specified relative sizes. Precise details are given in the manual on the German cooperation logo: giz.de/cdc > Corporate Design – German Federal Government > PR abroad

3.1 Typefaces and fonts | In-house typefaces
GIZ has three in-house typefaces: GIZ Gravur Condensed, Arial and Ga-ramond. One of these three typefaces, or in some cases combinations of them, can be used as appropriate, depending on which medium is used, how important the text is or what impact you intend to achieve.
Garamond
Recommendation for Adobe Garamond Pro: This is the typeface used for running texts in printed publications. It may be used on its own or in combination. In simple flyers or brochures it may be combined with Arial. In publications that present the corporate image or in lavishly designed publications, Garamond is combined with GIZ Gravur Condensed.

IMPORTANT!
Typefaces (fonts) are subject to copy-right. This means that a licence has to be purchased before you can use a certain computer font. Licences for the Garamond typefaces are available from (among others) www.adobe.de.
Arial
Arial is the PC typeface used at GIZ. It is used for correspondence, forms and publishing on the web. It is also used in Word documents and PowerPoint presentations.

The Arial typeface is pre-installed on almost all computers around the world. There is no need to purchase licences for this typeface.
GIZ Gravur Condensed
Recommendation for GIZ Gravur or Gravur Condensed: GIZ Gravur Condensed is the typeface used for headings, tables and graphics, and for continuous text in publications. It is used in publi-cations designed by graphic designers. The only typeface to be used in combination with it is Garamond.

This is a body copy in Adobe Garamond Pro Regular 10pt A blind text. From birth. It took me a long time to understand what it means to be a blind text: one does not make sense. Sometimes one gives the impression of being out of context. In many cases one is not read in the first place. But does that mean that I am a bad text? I know that I will ne-ver get the chance to appear in Newsweek. But does that mean that I am less important? I am blind! But I love being a text. And should you indeed read me to my very end I will have achieved something most normal texts don’t.

The design of GIZ’s business stationery (letterheads, business cards, courtesy cards) is binding; these are classified as official documents.
It is not permissible to include logos of other companies or institutions on the business stationery, not even for cofinanced projects. The same applies to any additions beyond the stipulated options allowed for personalisation, or emblems of specialist/professional associations or projects. On headed paper, GIZ must be clearly recognisable as the sender; this is no longer the case if other logos are added.
Notes on letter templates in Germany and abroad
If you need letterhead stationery on which the partner’s logo appears as well as the GIZ logo, you can produce your own letterheads. The GIZ margin column must not be included in this stationery. Please make sure that the sender’s address and all relevant contact data are always shown.
Please make sure that you always use the latest version of the letter templates. You can generate these in Word:
Open Word . Choose ‘File’ and ‘New’ ‘My templates’ ‘GIZ general’ ‘briefbögen-ausland.dotm’ or ‘briefbögen-deutschland-brüssel.dotm’ Click on ‘OK’
When you work abroad, please download the letter template here: https://dms.giz.de/dms/livelink.exe?func=ll&objId=80588991&objAction=browse&viewType=1. Please do not open it directly from the DMS.
A window opens in which you can enter the recipient’s data and your own personal data and you can choose the language (de, en, es, fr, pt, ru) If you want the logo to be printed (in case you do not use pre-printed papers) deactivate the box
„use pre-printed letterhead“. The binding additional wording ‘German development cooperation’ automatically appears in the
preselected language on letterheads abroad.
Notes on business cards
The design of business cards is likewise strictly defined and must not be modified. Staff abroad must have the cooperation logo of the country in question on the back of the card. Please order your business cards from our print shop (www.giz.druckreif.de), which stores all of the logos. Alternatively you can order just a PDF file for printing and print the cards yourself locally. Please note that no other logos apart from the GIZ logo and the cooperation logo are permitted to be shown on business cards, not even for cofinanced projects. If a GIZ staff member has a business card bearing logos relating to a different employer, this can have consequences in terms of liability law and labour law, especially if it is not clear to third parties in whose name the staff member is acting.
The name of the unit or division must be shown on the right, above the address. The section/group may also be shown, on the left below the staff member’s name. No job titles are shown, except for staff at managerial level.
Business cards for CPS/development workers
Staff working for the Civil Peace Service can obtain special cards displaying the CPS logo from the print shop. No other logos (from partners) may be included. Development workers therefore have two business cards: one for GIZ and one for the partner organisation. If a partner organisation’s logo is included there is a fundamental risk that a logo for a different employer on a staff member’s business card will have consequences in terms of liability law or labour law, and it will not be clear to third parties in whose name the staff member is acting.
5 Business stationery | General guidelines
NOTE
The letter templates must not be modi-fied in any way, nor is it permissible to integrate the German cooperation logo into the templates. Only GIZ Corporate Communications is permitted to make any modifications to the templates.

6.2 Publications | Sector projects/programmes,projects and programmes in Germany
All printed matter that GIZ publishes in the context of BMZ commissions in Germany must comply with BMZ corporate design rules. This applies to programmes/projects that are at least 50% funded from Departmental Budget 23, i.e. publications from sector projects/programmes in particular. The design of such publications follows the guidelines of the BMZ style guide. GIZ is identified as the publisher on the front cover and in the publishing information. This rule also applies to other implementing organisa-tions, such as KfW Development Bank, and it helps maintain the consistent image of German develop-ment cooperation within Germany.
The guidelines on the following pages apply to publications by sector projects/programmes and projects and programmes in Germany implemented on behalf of ministries other than BMZ. The ministry’s logo must be positioned to the right of the GIZ logo on all GIZ media produced by other sector projects/programmes (brochures, flyers, posters, CD-ROMs, presentations etc .).

6.3 Publications | Design of the inside pages of publications
The inside pages of publications may be layouted individually. Below are a number of tips on how to use typefaces etc. in order to ensure that your publication is easy to read and understand. Examples are given in the sample pdf.
 Useoftypefaces:Asageneralprinciplealwayssetcontinuoustextasflushleft,raggedright. Insertedboxescanbeformattedasjustifiedtext(flushleftandright).
 Arrangealltextelementsflushleft.
 Useflushleft,raggedrightwithhyphenation.
Leave a large enough margin around all edges of the page.
It is best to format main headings in bold at a size 2 to 4 points larger than the continuous text, while sub-headings are best formatted in bold at the same size as the rest of the text.
Take care that headings of the same level are also always set in the same font size and the same typeface variant (bold, semi-bold, italic, etc.). You should specify at the outset how you want accentuations, lists, footnotes, graphics titles and table headings to appear, and keep to thesespecificationsconsistentlythroughoutthedocument.
Avoid setting only in uppercase (all capitals) if at all possible. It is not easy to read.
Optimum legibility is ensured when lines are between 45 and 65 characters long. For DIN A4 format this means setting the text in two columns or one narrow column.
Page numbers should be easy to read, preferably bold and a little larger than the continuous text, and always in the same place, if possible aligned left and right on the outside.
Use indentation sparingly to make the text more readable.
The table of contents can be made easier to read by adding horizontal lines

Image brochure/country brochure
Beforeyouconsideranyofthefinerpoints, youneedaconceptthatincludesanobjective, targetgroups and messages. It is not about producing as many publications as possible; it is about ma-king them as meaningful as possible. Assistance on designing a country brochure can be found on the intranet.
We present ourselves in keeping with the overall German external presentation and its current norms, as well as with the reality on the ground (norms are not always fully up to date). Whenever a decision is made to make changes to the public image, we are quick to implement it.
GIZ’s image should be balanced in relation to the other German development cooperation actors. Accordingly, the design of a country brochure should not be overly elaborate.
Country brochures contribute to GIZ’s presentation of itself. A GIZ country brochure must have some added value if it is produced alongside a combined publication of German development cooperation. This is the case, for instance, if (a) GIZ also works for commissioning parties other than BMZ, (b) attempts to procure new contracts in the country seem promising, or (c) there is no joint brochure available locally, and there are no plans to produce one in the near future.
Information must be shared locally with other colleagues and, depending on the specific situation, a consensus should be reached.
The costs for a country brochure must be distributed fairly, according to the level of involvement. This means, for instance, that if GIZ International Services is involved in a project, it must also pay its share of the costs.

6.10 Publications | Newsletters
A newsletter is an email that appears periodically in either HTML or text format. It summarises current news and themes.
A newsletter provides an overview with links to further information and is sent to a group of sub-scribers. Newsletters can appear in four different layouts:
A newsletter with teaser text and links leading to various pages on the GIZ internet and GIZ intranet or DMS. Documents on the intranet are saved in DMS and can also be linked.
A self-contained newsletter without links or references to other documents. It has a maximum length of 3,000 characters.
A bullet list with each point comprising no more than two lines, to report on new issues in brief. The maximum number of bullet points per topic is eight.
A newsletter with a short overview and a link leading to a page on the internet or intranet. This page contains an explanatory text and a PDF document for download.
Newsletters should be produced with the same care as all other media (brochures, publications, webpages, CD-ROMs etc.), because every newsletter is an important marketing tool and means of communication. The design of newsletters is therefore subject to the corporate design rules.
Newsletters are produced with the aid of software called Mailingwork. Users merely have to insert text and images. Background information, a checklist for preparing your newsletter and the handbook for the newsletter application are available on the intranet at:
https://intranet.giz.de/cps/rde/xchg/giz_intranet_en/XSL/hs.xsl/-/HTML/770.htm

Logos (including the GIZ logo), images, different font colours and formatting etc. are not permitted in the signature.
All GIZ staff must use a binding email signature on emails sent to external recipients. As any formatting is often lost when emails are sent, in this case it is the content that really matters. To ensure a uniform appearance and a small file size, it is not permissible to include logos – not even the GIZ logo – or colours, images or dividers made up of letters or numbers in the signature.
Bilingual email signatures contain the signature details in German and one other langua-ge. The languages are formatted identically and are separated by a forward slash.

9.1 Word templates | Standards for producing PC forms
Company-wide PC templates and templates in O+R
There are a range of PC forms for internal and external communication. You will find all PC forms applicable to all departments in the GIZ forms and in O+R. These forms are designed in accordance with the GIZ standard for the production of PC forms. They all conform to a uniform design. Recurring content, for example, is always represented in the same way. Typographic tools such as font size and weight, lines and selection fields are used uniformly and sparingly. Inappropriate design features such as placing text in boxes are avoided. This uniform appearance is binding.
The standards in detail:
The GIZ logo is placed at the top right of the PC form. The form title is placed at the top left at the same level as the GIZ logo. Predefinedtextandenteredtextaredistinguishedfromeachotherbythefontsizeandfont weight.Thepredefinedtextmaybeaccentuatedbybeingshowninbold.Theenteredtextis inserted at a size 2pt larger, max. 11pt, in regular font. Exceptions to this rule are all forms produced on the basis of the letter or the memo in brief template. In GermanyThe design of a stand at a trade fair or exhibition can be chosen as appropriate. It must be clearly apparent to visitors what the theme of the exhibition is and who the exhibitor is.The use of logos of organisations taking part in the exhibition is dependent on the location and the subject of the exhibition.
Templates for posters, roll ups and backdrop banners are available at CDC > Templates & graphic material > Graphic templates > Posters, roll ups, backdrop banners

Outside Germany At exhibitions intended to present German development cooperation on location, the relevant coope-ration symbol and the GIZ logo must always be displayed on the stand. The logo must be placed at a clearly visible position on the stand. The size of the logo depends on the circumstances, but as a rule its diameter should be no less than 40cm.
