foreword
In the past few years, I have witnessed SPP growing at an impressive pace as a result of our employees’ efforts and dedication to their jobs, and also due to successful undertaken projects which have contributed to its current well-deserved reputation.
A major focus of the organization remains the importance of customers as we keep on striving to research and develop innovative, efficient, unique and reliable products and services that maximize the cost-savings of our customers, add value to them, and maintain our leadership position in the energy systems and power generation market.
As we look forward to the next ten years, our list of goals may deem to be a difficult task, but I trust that all SPP members would work harder and look further ahead.
Finally, special thanks are due to our customer and industry partners and also my colleagues at SPP, for their professional support, insights, enthusiasm and precious contributions.

the companyFounded in 1972, Sakr establishment, as it was known then, traded and contracted in electrical accessories and lighting fixtures before venturing into the Power Generation business. In the years that followed, Sakr entered the Iraqi market and became the number one company in sales of generators in that market.
In 2004, Sakr was appointed distributor of GE Transportation diesel engines in selected areas, which triggered the spin-off of a power projects department within the company.
In 2007, concentration on power projects grew and SPP business unit was launched to handle the design and implementation of turnkey power plants. On that same year, Sakr acquired MBH plant in Germany for the purpose of generating sets assembly in Europe.
In 2011, another plant named FSA was
acquired in Poland for the manufacture of engines under the license of MAN. That same year, SPP was established as a strategic company within Sakr Group due to the need of a fully dedicated entity for power projects. Since then, SPP has grown into a global energy service provider and a leader in power generation solutions and services.
The power projects engineered and executed by SPP vary from a simple equipment supply to a complete turnkey delivery on EPC basis, in addition to Operation and Maintenance services, based on the customer’s requirements.
As for the current SPP product portfolio, it consists of Power Plants operating on Diesel, Gas, HFO, and Dual Fuel (Diesel/Gas) for which many of the world’s leading power engines’ and turbines’ brands are used such as GE Transportation, GE Waukesha, GE Jenbacher, MAN and Mitsubishi.

Sales Planning and ManagementWe develop our way of conducting business development in such a way to give customers more value and be able to track right opportunities very efficiently.
Project ManagementThe Project manager is always assigned a project team composed of engineering, procurement and cost control teams. During the basic design phase, the conceptual outlined drawings and the delivery schedule included in the proposal will be elaborated on and will include the calculation and detailed information for the detail design of the project.
Design and EngineeringProposal Phase: During the proposal phase the Engineering Department normally supports the Commercial Operation Department with drawings or any other type of engineering documentations needed.Design Phase: When a contract is signed, the proposed mission is moved from the Commercial Operation Department to the Engineering Department which assigns a dedicated internal team for the project.
In order to achieve a consistent standard of quality, we look not just at what we do but at how we do it as well. All our processes are measured for flexibility, simplicity and predictability.

Challenge Description
Black Start Genset Selection
Black Start Gensets types, specs and number are selected/designed based on factors such as black Start loads, allocated space, plant operation and harmonics. In many cases, SPP acts as an expert consultant for the customer on deciding on Black Start Gensets, and may advise on changes, as in black start size calculation and plant layout.
Time Factor
The aim is to successfully complete a black Start Project ahead of schedule because in most cases, plants are not initially connected to the grid and the client would need to use the BSDG to supply the plant auxiliary load prior to first Gas Turbine commissioning.
Commissioning PhasingMost black Start Projects require from SPP more than one commissioning visit, necessitating from our team to be always ready for such visit calls.
Integration with the Plant
Ensure Open and Flexible Communication with plant control system and ensure energization on dead bus and back synchronization with the plant turbines. Load Test mode Option is also required in all projects where the BSDG is synchronized to the MV Bus bars fed from the Grid.
Missing Operation Philosophy
In nearly all projects, SPP team needs to prepare the BSDG detailed operation philosophy including plant configuration during black start mode. The client usually gives guidelines only.
Fine Tuning on Site
During the first energization of the cranking motor on site, SPP team needs to usually make some fine tuning on voltage and speed regulators to cope with the motor starting curve. In some cases, we also help the client in adjusting the relay setting of the cranking motor local MV breaker or soft starter.
GE Medium Speed vs. High Speed Engines Life Cycle Cost over 10 years
Black Start Expertise
MBH Medium Speed Generating Sets based on GE Transportation Engine are the ideal diesel solution for prime, peaking and black start applications.
In the particular case of black start applications, the purpose of the BSDG system is to provide auxiliary power to enable the start up of the power plant main generating units (Turbines) and to restore the power station to operation without relying on auxiliary power from the grid.
Many black start projects were executed by SPP namely for mega deal projects in Iraq (up to 250 MW and 10 units per site).
