The history of coated steel began with measures to counteract steel’s weakest point: rust. Steel-coating methods can be divided into plating and coating and plating further divided into electroplating and hot dipping. Today, steel is coated not only for protection against rust but also to meet the demand for environment-friendly features, such as product longevity, efficient use of resources, process efficiency, and cleanliness. In hot dipping, we diversify and combine both the substrate and coating materials to create unique heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant products. Through this process, we achieve sophisticated, long-lasting products. In electroplating, we fuse high-quality membranes to the plate to produce products with such beneficial features as emollient surfacing and superb processability. In consideration of the environment, we have totally eliminated hexavalent chromium from the post-treatment process. We have created numerous products that feature enhanced aesthetics as well as such benefits as superb processability, pollution prevention, and wear and abrasion resistance. Some examples are Tecstar, which is a supercorrosion- resistant precoated steel that maintains its surface quality, even during deep drawing; our lubricated galvanized steel, which eliminates the customer’s need for product degreasing ; and our heat-resistant, nonadhesive steel.
Productivity,Quality, and Wide Application
The hot-dipping technique is derived from the YG method, which has been used to develop numerous products, as it allows a greater variety of base material and plating material combination matrices. Examples of these products include PAINTITE (zinccoated steel), ALSTAR (aluminum-coated
steel), Galvastar (55% aluminum-zinc-alloycoated steel), and ZAM®
(next-generation hotdipped, super-corrosion-resistant zincaluminum- magnesium-alloy-coated steel). We are creating products with special features that meet the needs of our clients and finding optimal applications for the sheet products we manufacture.
Diversified Substrates and Coating Materials Combined to Create Unique Hot-Dipped Products
As electroplating can be used to coat products of any shape, this method has a wide variety of applications, especially in the electronics industry. Our Moonstar Zinc and Moonstar Zinc Super are representative of our electroplated galvanized steel product lineup.

Hot-dipped galvanizing
ZAM® is hot-dipped zinc-aluminum-magnesium-alloy-coated steel developed as a highly suitable new product for the 21st century. Our newly developed technology, which involves adding magnesium bath at a stable rate during the plating process, enables super corrosion resistance without increased coating weight. In addition to its durability, ZAM® is an apt response to the shift from the use of wood to steel as a construction material. ZAM® contributes to the conservation of forests and is thus friendly to society and the environment. ZAM® is the product of the new galvanizing line at the Toyo Works, and we are working to expand its applications.

From Iron to Fine Steel:Technology and Experience Are Our Greatest Assets
Although its proud history extends
back to the early 1900s, today’s
Nisshin Steel was incorporated in April
1959 with the merger of Nihon Teppan
and Nichia Steel. With the installation
of our first blast furnace in 1962, we
evolved into an integrated steel
manufacturer and staked our place as
a specialist in the coated steel sheet
and stainless steel sheet markets.
Since then, Nisshin Steel has
continued to be the industry leader,
making progress in all areas of its
business. We developed a highly
praised proprietary gas-wiping (YG)
method for galvanizing and
aluminizing steel sheet. We have also
led the industry with tandem
Sendzimir mills, converters, vacuum
degassing, and other sophisticated
technologies. Today, we are the leader
for both quality and volume of
production in the specialty steel
industry, especially in the field of
coldrolled special steel strip.
Today, Nisshin Steel is growing
closer to consumer industries, as it
continues to foster business by paying
close attention to client needs and
developing new products and
applications. Our product line now
ranges from everyday consumer goods
to products found in cutting-edge
fields. Through our face-to-face, personal
approach to doing business, we are
pursuing the attainment of high added
value in all our products and staying in
tune with our customers’perspectives.

Our main market for special steel is automotive parts, accounting for 70%, followed by industrial machine components and cutting tools. Major applications include:
Clutch plates for automatic transmissions :temper-rolled S35CSeat belt buckles :hot and cold S55C, N55D (Nisshin standard)Sheet gear :hot and cold S45C, SCM415, SNCM220
These automotive parts are made with the fine blanking method and cold-rolled strip is used. But, due to improvements in the fine blanking technology and steel quality, hotrolled steel sheet is increasingly being used and, in the near future, will completely replace cold-rolled strip.
Market for Special Steel
Stainless Steel
Globally, stainless steel enjoys preeminent status as an industrial material due to its excellent corrosion resistance and strength in mechanical applications, and its uses have evolved along with the times. The Japanese steel industry boasts the world’s largest variety. The uses for stainless steel have expanded to include applications in the construction, chemical, electronics, and energy industries, and the development of new types of steel is proceeding at a lively pace. In 1958, Nisshin Steel built the world’s first Sendzimir mill and established itself as Japan’s first integrated stainless steel manufacturer. Furthermore, we have made use of breakthrough manufacturing equipment and methods, such as converters and vacuum degassing, and have installed a tandem Sendzimir mill at our Shunan Works. Available in a variety of gauges, from thick to ultrathin, our stainless steel products enjoy the reputation of being among the world’s finest.
Always Leading the World in Cold-Rolled Stainless Steel
We have developed an austenitic stainless steel, NSS 304ES, which has the lowest hardness of any type of stainless steel. A decrease in the work-hardening ratio and solid solution contribute to the softening of this new steel. NSS 304ES is suitable for many applications using such processes as cold-forming, transferred press, and stretch flanging. Intermediate annealing is not necessary with this steel in multistage press forming owing to its superior formability and softness. With these characteristic properties, it is possible to reduce load in cold-forming and blanking, which makes this steel useful for various applications.
NSS 304ES Extremely Soft AusteniticStainless Steel
Our aluminum-plated ALSTAR Stainless Steel, compared to traditional stainless and coated steel, possesses markedly improved corrosion resistance and is used in automotive exhaust systems, roofing for seaside structures, and for applications in other highly corrosive environments.
ALSTAR Stainless Steel :Superb Heat and Oxidation Resistance, Born of the Fusion of Stainless Steel and Aluminum
With numerous special features, such as heat resistance, durability, cost-effectiveness, processability, and aesthetic appeal in addition to super corrosion resistance, Nisshin Steel’s ferritic stainless steel for construction applications is available in the following three types.
Tough-Tain I : NSS 445M2With a basic composition of 22% chromium and 1.2% molybdenum, Tough-Tain I features strong resistance to heat and salt in addition to excellent cost performance.
The Tough-Tain Series:Ferritic Stainless Steel for Use in Construction
Tough-Tain II : NSS 447M1With a basic composition of 30% chromium and 2% molybdenum, this product features a higher chromium content than Tough-Tain I, allowing for remarkable resistance against saltinduced corrosion. Tough-Tain II is perfect for use on reclaimed land and areas where exposure to salt is high. Tough-Tain Z : Moonstar Galvanized Stainless Steel Tough-Tain Z is ferritic stainless steel with a heavy zinc coating for high corrosion resistance. The combination of super corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal makes this product unique.

Built in 1951 in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, the Kure Works serves as our melting center. In addition to large-scale production, the Kure Works efficiently handles the small-lot needs of diverse special orders. Facilities at the Kure Works include two freestanding blast furnaces for iron making, three top- and bottom-blown converters for steelmaking, vertical semiunderground and bending type continuous casting machines, and a tandem hot-rolling mill. Constant technological upgrading over the years has helped improve the stability and quality of our steel supplieses.
In 2008, the Sakai Works put its special steel production framework into effect upon the implementation of state-of-the-art reversing Sendzimir mill. The Sakai Works also operates world-class electrolytic galvanizing lines and an advanced continuous coating line.
The Plants behind Our Products : An Overview
Kure Works
In 1991, to maintain future competitiveness into the 21st century, we acquired 760,000 square meters of land in Saijyo City, Ehime Prefecture, to be used as the site of our new Toyo Works. Subsequently, in October 1999, operations were commenced on the world’s first pickling facilities equipped with preroll functions at the Toyo Works. Furthermore, operations were commenced on cold-rolling facilities that were directly linked to the rear face of the pickling facilities in April 2000, and in May a continuous galvanizing line was activated. Through the installation and activation of this series of cutting-edge facilities, the Toyo Works has become an integrated coated steel works, displaying industry-leading quality and productivity.
