From the Principal’s DeskDear Parents,

Thank you to our parents for keeping up to date and following the advice being provided by the Government. We all need to work together to keep our community as safe as is possible.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) - For the most up to date information see https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/school-safety/novel-coronavirus

Current advice remains the same as previously emailed. The Department of Education has developed some helpful information for parents and carers which I have included in this newsletter.

In addition: If a case of COVID-19 is identified it is the Department of Health which will trace close contacts and tell them what action is required of them.

It is recommended that the wider community be vaccinated with the seasonal influenza vaccine. For some groups it is available for free. Further information https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/flu.aspx.

Important Information

Coronavirus (COVID -19) Information for parents and carers to support children and young people

How you can support your child It is perfectly normal for children to have questions about events that are covered in the media, such as the information currently being distributed about COVID-19. Children look to the significant adults in their lives for guidance on how to manage their reactions and you can help your child by remaining calm and reassuring them.

There is a common misunderstanding that talking with your child about a topic such as COVID-19 may increase their anxiety. This is not the case. It is important to listen to your child and answer their questions as honestly as possible and correct any misunderstandings. This will help them feel informed and understand what is happening.

Keeping up to date with the facts from reliable sources will help keep conversations calm, considered, and constructive. Provide information in words that are appropriate to the age of your child.

Children can be distressed by hearing repeated stories so monitor how much your child is being exposed to television and social media and encourage them to talk to you about what they are seeing and hearing.

Some practical advice Some practical advice for your child includes reminding them to cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze (coughing into their elbow is a useful strategy), keep their hands clean by washing them regularly with soap and water, and avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth before washing their hands. These are easy habits for children to adopt, and should help them feel as though they're able to exert some control over their circumstances.

If your child must stay at home, it is important for your child to maintain a healthy lifestyle including proper diet, sleep, and social contact at home and by email and phone with family and friends.

Communication is important • read the department’s response to COVID-19 for current information • read any information sent home by the school. • contact the school if your child becomes unwell.

Where to get help Contact the school if you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing to discuss the most appropriate support. Support is also available through a number of agencies and community organisations. Parents and carers can:

• call the National Coronavirus Health Information line (1800 020 080) • review the NSW Health COVID-19 website for the latest information and advice • obtain help and information from the local General Practitioner or Community Health Centre

If you would like additional support, the following services are available:

• The school counselling service • Kids Helpline – 1800 55 1800 – kidshelpline.com.au • Headspace – 1800 650 890 – eheadspace.org.au • Parent Helpline – 1300 1300 52 • Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636 • Lifeline – 13 11 14

Be at School on TimeAll students are expected to be at school ready to begin morning lessons at 9:10am. Work with your family to set up morning routines to ensure your child/ren are at school in plenty of time. Regular lateness impacts on your child’s learning and sense of wellbeing at school.

Page 4

Page 5: Coronavirus (COVID -19) - eppingwest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦  · Web viewFor our children’s safety monitor all visitors who come to the school during school hours. We ask that

Be sure to speak to your child’s teacher if your child expresses any concerns or reluctance to come to school.

Late ArrivalsIt is a legal requirement that an explanation is required each time a student arrives late to school. Here are our school procedures for late arrivals after 9:10am:

1. Parent/carer takes child to the school office with their parent or carer to register the partial absence and explanation.

2. Administration staff will register partial absences and issue a partial absence slip.3. Parent/carer accompanies their child to the classroom and gives the partial absence slip to the class

teacher.4. Please make sure that you come to the office with your child if you arrive late and accompany

him/her to the classroom to ensure s/he arrives safely.

Parents Visiting the School For our children’s safety monitor all visitors who come to the school during school hours. We ask that all parents who visit the school during the day report to the school office to explain the purpose of your visit. Please do not go directly to your child’s classroom without speaking to the office staff first.

If you need to take your child home early you must have the partial absence recorded at the office first. You will then be given a partial absence slip to give to the class teacher when you collect your child.

Happenings/Events Mufti-Day – Tuesday 24th March - Bring a Gold Coin - Wear “Helpers in Our Community”Our school has volunteered to support school communities that have suffered from the bushfires in the recent months. Through the Adopt a School Phase 1 Batemans Bay PPC Schools Initiative the plan is for 2 schools that volunteered to be matched with a school in need. We have been matched with a Special School in Ulladulla called Budawong SSP. Also supporting Budawong SSP is Balgownie PS near Wollongong.

Budawong SSP is a small school of 33 students all with complex disabilities. The families have had a terrible summer trying to support their children in very trying times.

We have been in touch with the Principal of Budawong SSP and she has asked her staff and they have all agreed that a well-being day for the students and families would be the most beneficial way to support them. They have thought of a movie day for students and families or a fun day like our Fete with a jumping castle, face painting, music and food stalls. They would be very appreciative if we could raise some funds to help subsidise this important event.

Epping West would like to support Budawong SSP and run a fundraiser with the support of our P and C and school community. The money raised would go to the students at Budawong SSP for a well-being day.

Epping West will hold Mufti Day with gold coin or higher donation to support this school.

On Tuesday 24th March 2020 students will come to school dressed as a helper in our community eg. fireman/firewoman, policeman/policewoman, ambulance officer, doctor, nurse etc and bring in their gold coin donation. The students will discuss the recent fire tragedies in class including fire safety, fire plans, drills etc.

We will advertise this initiative in the school newsletter, on our website, in classrooms, on assemblies etc.

Naplan Online Technical Readiness Test

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Monday, 23rd March, Year 3 and Year 5 students will be participating in the NAPLAN Online Technical Readiness Test.

Students will be required to bring:

iPad FULLY charged Headphones (to hear instructions and spelling items delivered via audio )

Students MUST have the updated NAP Locked Down Brower App installed.

School Policy

Parents and School Policy

Parents naturally want the very best for their children.

What exactly is ‘the best’ of course differs greatly from one parent to the next but basically we all want our children to be successful and happy - and to feel secure in all aspects of their lives.

During their school years, the home and school occupy the greatest part of their time - and carry the greatest influence on their development into adulthood. Obviously, the more harmony there is between home and school, the greater will be the chances of achievement and fulfillment.

The contribution which parents have traditionally made in schools is highly valued. However, children (first and foremost), parents, teachers and the school community generally stand to reap major benefits from even stronger ties.

The ‘best’ possible outcomes from all children's education are very much enhanced by a strong partnership between parents, teachers and students.

Introduction

This policy is about parents and our school.

It uses the term ‘parent’ to refer to people who have responsibility for the care of children attending school.

Children learn best when school programs offer some understanding of their world. Therefore a strong partnership between parents and school becomes all the more important when the complex and rapidly changing nature of our society is considered.

The Department of Education and this school, encourages participation because:

parents have a unique knowledge and understanding of their own children, being their first and most influential educators;

parents have the right, through their responsibility to and for their children, to be informed about their children's learning and to participate in reaching decisions which affect them; and

parents have talents, interests, energies and skills which enrich the life and program of the school.

Involvement and Participation

InvolvementRefers to the contribution which parents make to the life and business of a school without necessarily being part of the school decision making process. Many parents are already involved in their child's school in a variety of ways. Their involvement may involve working in activities or listening to children reading. Parents can also be involved by being consulted on particular issues by decision-makers.

Page 10

Page 11: Coronavirus (COVID -19) - eppingwest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦  · Web viewFor our children’s safety monitor all visitors who come to the school during school hours. We ask that

ParticipationRefers to parents sharing in the making of decisions about school aims, policies and programs with staff and students. Participation may be through membership of the School Council, the P&C, sub-committees, or in preparing submissions on issues of special interest.

The Department of Education and Training is committed both to increasing parent involvement and to ensure that parents can participate in school decision-making if they wish to do so. The nature and level of each parent's involvement and participation remains a matter of individual choice.

Involvement and participation are equally valuable and parents should have the opportunity to choose how they are involved, or how they participate, from a wide range of options.

Guidelines

In encouraging the involvement and participation of parents in our school the following guidelines will be observed:

any involvement and participation recognises the framework of relevant legislation (such as the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Standards in Education) and NSW Department of Education Policy and Procedures; and

any involvement and participation must not conflict with the specific professional responsibilities for which principals and teachers are accountable.

(For example, while parents may participate in the development of a School’s Discipline Procedures, it is the responsibility of the principal and teachers to manage student behaviour on a day-to-day basis.)

Responsibilities

All of us, each and every parent, the school principal, teachers and school counsellors, have a role to play in encouraging and supporting parent and community participation in our school.

Responsibilities of the Principal

The Principal will:

consult with parents and plan to promote parent involvement and participation;

endeavour to foster the interest, knowledge and skills of parents who have not previously been involved;

ensure that information is made available to parents, establishing new channels where necessary;

monitor and evaluate parent participation practices;

include, wherever possible and relevant, parents in staff development and school development activities; and

address, investigate and provide feedback on, the concerns of parents when expressed directly to the Principal.

build good relationships with parents and children;

Page 11

Page 12: Coronavirus (COVID -19) - eppingwest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦  · Web viewFor our children’s safety monitor all visitors who come to the school during school hours. We ask that

Responsibilities of Teachers

Teachers will continue to work with parents to:

help parents feel welcome in the classroom, for example, through activities including class parents' meetings;

ensure that parents have all relevant information about their children's education;

organise to meet with a parent at a mutually agreeable time to discuss their child’s progress or any concern if requested or if the teacher sees a need;

seek the views of all parents on matters relating to their children's education;

promote the idea of their parents' participation among children; and

create a welcoming environment for all members of the school community.

Responsibilities of Parents

Parents have a responsibility to:

cooperate with school staff, other parents and students in the interest of their child's education; show an active interest in their child's schooling; be involved and support the organizations set up to facilitate parent involvement in the school; read the weekly newsletter, school website and all other written communication from the school; respond promptly to school requests for various permissions; attend the Meet the teacher occasion in week 4 and 5 of the year to understand how the class

program is organised and the curriculum for the year; communicate concerns in a manner which allows for positive action to be taken. Politeness and

common courtesy is expected; make an appointment at a mutually agreeable time to discuss the progress of their child; understand that the teacher is responsible for the whole class and therefore cannot engage in

discussion ‘at the classroom door’; support the implementation of school policies; respect the professional knowledge and decisions of the teachers and the school; and assist the school in establishing a set of shared values and expectations.

Parents need to understand that information comes home through the understanding and eyes of a child and may need further investigation to understand what it is. If parents hear something or are worried by their child’s manner they certainly should talk to the teacher and the school. Teachers do not believe everything told in ‘News’ so parents need to also exercise discretion.

Responsibilities of Children

Children have a responsibility to:

develop an understanding of the School's Fair Discipline Code, Rules, Expectations and Policies that apply to them;

Page 12

Page 13: Coronavirus (COVID -19) - eppingwest-p.schools.nsw.gov.au€¦  · Web viewFor our children’s safety monitor all visitors who come to the school during school hours. We ask that

co-operate with each other and school staff to create a happy and safe learning environment; and

take every opportunity to learn as much and as well as possible through always trying to do their personal best.

Communicating Concerns

There will be times where parents wish to query something or make a complaint concerning something which has occurred at school.

So that we have the best possible chance of arriving at a solution which is best for all parties concerned, it helps if parents can give us a clear view of:

what is seen to be the problem; and what action or outcome is desired.

In many cases, the class teacher may be the appropriate person to approach. All teachers are willing to set times where they can meet with parents to discuss concerns. Parents should either contact the teacher to arrange a time, or arrange this through the office.

In other cases, parents may wish to discuss their concerns with supervisors or other executive as detailed in the ‘Approaching the School’ document.

It must be understood that it is not always possible for the action which is requested to be followed or for the desired outcome to be attained.

It is hoped, though, that if concerns are communicated at the time they are felt, then everybody can do their best to get as close as possible to a fair and workable solution.

Formal Complaints

If a parent wishes to lodge a Formal Complaint this needs to be specified to the Principal so the required Departmental Procedures can be followed.
