GENERAL Coronal mass ejection info
Coronal mass ejections are huge ejections of hundreds of tons of plasma from the Sun's corona. The plasma shoots out into interplanetary space at speeds of 200-2000 kilometers per second, sometimes creating geomagnetic storms. They mess with our magnetosphere and that glitches up our techy stuff. They are also cool and such.

A coronal mass ejection is an explosion on the sun's corona that can sometimes result in hurting the environment on the Earth. It can spew out sun particles that have radiation in them. So when it gets to Earth it can seriously cause danger to the environment.

There is a theory that in 2012, a coronal mass ejection will be the end of the Earth. They say that the CME will not only be aimed straight at us, but the shading of the planets will funnel all of the excess CME straight at us.
When do CMEs effect Earth?
CMEs get to Earth a few days after it actually happens. But the radiation from the coronal mass ejection can get to Earth only eight hours after the CME. The CME can really hurt the Earth's magnetosphere and magnetic field.

Earlier in January, a coronal mass ejection hit our magnetosphere and created a geomagnetic storm which effected an at&t satellite. It was malfunctioning for a while until they were able to fix it.
What causes a CME?
CMEs are caused by magnetic reconnection. Magnetic reconnection is when different magnetic domains splice into each other, changing their patterns. The sun's magnetic field obviously reacts with solar flares and CMEs.
