    Chaplet of Divine MercyFilius

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is taken from the Diary of Bl. FaustinaKowalska, Notebook One, page 197 of the manuscript. Bl. FaustinaKowalska was born Helen Kowalska on August 25, 1905 in the village of Glogowiec, west of the city of Lodz in Poland. She was accepted into theconvent of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in 1925. She had manymystical experiences and her spiritual director Father Michael Sopockoinstructed her to record her experiences in a diary. It was in the 1930's thatshe had the visions which formed the basis for the devotion to the DivineMercy, a devotion which she tire lessly promoted until her death on October5, 1938.

At one ti me there was a great d eal of controversy surrounding Bl. Faustinaand the devotion to the Divine Mercy, largely due to misconceptions causedby the numerous spurious translations of her diary. Given the confusion of the time, Pope John XXIII prudently censured the devotion. However, acertain Archbishop of Cracow, Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II,made sure that proper translations were made and accurate details of BlFaustina's life and diary were made known. The confusion eventually partedand the ban on the Divine Mercy was finally lifted by Pope Paul VI on April15, 1978. On April 18, 1993 Pope John Paul II beatified Sister Faustinafollowing a miraculous cure worked through her intercession. For furtherinformation see: National Shrine of Divine Mercy
