A Word from the Principal: The School Fence

It is hard to miss the newly completed green fence that is surrounding the perimeter of the

school grounds. The fence was funded by the Ministry of Education’s Special Education

Services due to Health and Safety requirements for some students in the school with special

needs. Some of you may have found the gates very tricky to open as they were installed

with two latches. As a result of this, three of the gates have been vandalised, and so we

have gained permission to remove one of the latches off each gate which will happen when

the installers return to school to repair the damaged gates. It is a requirement that the

gates are kept shut during school hours, however, the school is going to install locks that

will keep the gates open after school and during the weekends, for ease of access into the

school grounds. The repair of the gates is at a cost to the school, so we are hopeful that by

keeping the gates open outside of school hours, it will stop any future vandalism, and then

at the same time, mean that the school funds are being used for the education of the

children and not for repairs and vandalism!

The school is also very grateful for the PIPS group (Parents in Partnership) for the donation

of an extra gate that is to be installed near the caretaker’s garages.

Community Involvement

One of the strategic goals for the school is that ‘Coromandel Area School will reflect the

community’s aspirations for its children’s learning.’ As a means to gather information

regarding your aspirations for children, a survey will be posted to families, along with their

children’s school report, during the school holidays.

The school is also taking the opportunity to have some of the community come into the

school for a learning opportunity. We are delighted that the Coromandel Senior Net will be

using a classroom for their ICT learning, and that some of our students will be working with

them teaching them various ICT skills.

bikes on the road in Glover Street.

Coromandel Senior Settlement Trust

‘Kia ora’ from the Kiwi Can Team

Over the last three weeks, our students in Kiwi Can have been talking and

learning about being responsible. Our tamariki have learnt that it is

important to remember that we take responsibility for our actions and don’t make

excuses, or blame others. We have discovered how we show responsibility

at home, at school, and in our community.

Our senior students even came up with a responsibility poem; students were asked to describe what they

thought responsibility smelt like, tasted like, looked like, felt like and sounded like. Below is an example of the

awesome work that was produced:

Poem from Room Seven : Responsibility

Sometimes responsibility doesn’t taste like anything because we shouldn’t always expect a reward

but should always feel like making a good choice, as we finally have a voice.

Happy voices encouraging each other, smells like fresh sheets, rainbows and lolly pops.

Responsibility looks like helping each other up when they are down, responsibility all around.

At the end of May 2015, the Coromandel Kiwi Can team was asked by Richardsons Real Estate to run a team

building, family fun day. This was held in Thames at the Rugby Club. A fun day was had by all and Richardsons

Real Estate kindly donated $600.00 to the Coromandel Kiwi Can team, which will be used to purchase

resources and equipment for the tamariki at our three schools—Coromandel, Colville and Thames South. Our

Kiwi Can team would like to thank Richardsons Real Estate for giving us this opportunity.

Year Seven & Eight Camp:

School camps are a great chance for students to learn new skills outside the classroom. Students learn more about their class-

mates and teachers, and life-long memories are made. Later this year, the combined Year Seven and Eight class will be going to

Totara Springs in Matamata for three days. The students have planned many outdoor education activities including abseiling,

archery and rock-climbing. The camp will cost $200 per student and we hope you will support their fundraising efforts. The first

fundraiser is selling sheep manure for the garden @ $8 a bag, including delivery. The students will be digging, bagging and deliver-

ing it themselves. Please get behind this great initiative. To order bags of sheep manure, please ring Rosemary or Richard Stone

on 866 8081.

Computer Security:

We have recently seen an increase in students bringing devices to school which have viruses on them. One place which has

infected student devices are online film websites which offer the latest release films (please note these sites are often

illegal). These film sites automatically download viruses to computers while the user is watching the film.

Our school filtering system detects infected student machines and in some extreme cases, has had to deny the device

access to the internet at school due to the seriousness of the infection and potential to compromise our systems.

We are aware that many of you have bought devices for your child in order to support and enhance their learning in

school; to support your child in removing viruses we are offering an advice clinic every interval this week. However, there

are some steps that can be taken at home to ensure that your child's device is safe and virus free.

From a website: If you are unsure, leave the site and research the software you are being asked to install. If it is OK, you

can always come back to site and install it. If it is not OK, you will avoid a malware headache.

From e-mail: Do not trust anything associated with a spam e-mail. Approach e-mail from people you know with caution

when the message contains links or attachments. If you are suspicious of what you are being asked to view or install, don't

do it.

From physical media: Your friends, family, and associates may unknowingly give you a disc or flash drive with an infected

file on it. Don't blindly accept these files; scan them with security software. If you are still unsure, do not accept the files.

From a pop-up window: Some pop-up windows or boxes will attempt to corner you into downloading software or

accepting a free "system scan" of some type. Often these pop-ups will employ scare tactics to make you believe you need

what they are offering in order to be safe. Close the pop-up without clicking anything inside it (including the X in the cor-

ner). Close the window via Windows Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Delete).

From another piece of software: Some programs attempt to install malware as a part of their own installation process.

When installing software, pay close attention to the message boxes before clicking Next, OK, or I Agree. Scan the user

agreement for anything that suggests malware may be a part of the installation. If you are unsure, cancel the installation,

check up on the program, and run the installation again if you determine it is safe.

From illegal file-sharing services: There is little quality control in the world of illegal software, and it is easy for an attacker

to name a piece of malware after a popular movie, album, or program to tempt you into downloading it.

How to Remove viruses on a Windows Laptop

1. Download and install Avast anti virus. https://www.avast.com/en-nz/index

2. Ensure you do not have two anti virus programs running. If you have an antivirus program which is asking you to pay

money for it, simply uninstall it. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QZ228CqnRQ

2. When you have installed Avast run a full scan and follow the instructions on screen for deleting suspect files and

programs.

3. You may also need to install an anti malicious software (malware) program. Malware spies on your browsing habits and

can steal passwords and online banking pin numbers! Install Malware bytes (the free version) https://

www.malwarebytes.org/lp/sem/5/?gclid=CPKS2bPSpsYCFZcTvQod1TQAMA

4. When you have installed Malwarebytes run a full scan and follow the instructions on screen for deleting suspect files

and programs.

5. It is sensible to schedule these programs to run daily, usually when you are not using the machine.
