The sea plays a huge part in living or holidaying in Cornwall, so we take a look at two iconic, life-saving aspects of Cornish life: the new Lizard Lifeboat Station and our cover feature about lighthouses. Visit the Lizard lighthouse or plan a walk round a lighthouse: Godrevy maybe, or take two ferries from Falmouth to walk round St Anthonys Head. And for us here at Cornwall Living, as we approach our 50th issue, we are hugely proud to have become part of the Leven Media Group. Its all part of the ongoing growth of the organisation and our ability to support more local businesses.

I talk to the charismatic Right Reverend Tim Thornton, better known as just Bishop Tim. Foodie is back again, this time featuring the delightful chef Jude Kereama and his wife Jane, from Kota and Kota Kai in Porthleven. We review Prawn on the Lawn in Padstow and The Brig in Falmouth, along with all the usual recipes and gourmet gossip. There are plenty of wonderful properties to buy, ideas for holidays or days out, health and nancial advice; as well as home improvements, design, and some fabulous clothes!

And this is the time of year to enroll on a course for September, whether its to learn a new skill, have fun or enhance your career; Truro & Penwith College have plenty on offer. We have their part-time course guide to tempt you between pages 66 and 67.

Hopefully you will be reading this outside in the sun with a glass of something chilled.

    Enjoy!

What a fabulous start to the summer weve had. Cornwall is buzzing and everyone seems to have a tan!

After a decision 12 months ago to open the Red River Caf at Heartlands on a Friday and Saturday evening, the Red River Grill was conceived. Serving great quality, locally sourced meals at affordable prices, the Grill, located in the historic Grade II listed Carpenters Workshop, provides a historically unique and atmospheric location for dining, whatever the occasion. A year after opening, the establishment continues to go from strength to strength, with a mass of positive feedback regarding the high quality of food prepared by talented chefs Tim and Tom. In years to come, as momentum continues to build, the Grill looks forward to opening more days of the week and becoming a real focal point to the growing community. Congratulations!

As the HMRC con rms that, in the last year, the government has bene ted from Inheritance Tax (IHT) to the tune of 4.6 billion, St. Jamess Place Wealth Management Divisional Director Tony Mdd points out that: At the heart of this problem remains the simple fact that IHT is a voluntary tax. The Treasury relies on inertia, ignorance and peoples reluctance to confront the issue. The result: a record boom in revenue generated last year, money which could otherwise stay in the family and be used to support future generations.

In fact, by 2020/21, IHT receipts are set to rise to 5.6 billion a year, according to the O ce for Budget Responsibility in March. This is a timely reminder of the need for good estate planning. With this in mind, Associate Partner of St. Jamess Place Thomas Sopp can help guide you in creating and implementing a highly effective tax-minimisation strategy, emphasising the reduction of your estates liability to IHT which could otherwise signi cantly jeopardise your prosperity.

ornwall has the greatest concentration of lighthouses to be found anywhere; not just simple beacons and harbour

lights, but ones that are celebrated worldwide as magni cent examples of the lighthouse builders skills. Walk along the coast path and catch sight of a lighthouse perched out at sea or on some rocky headland and you cant help but be amazed at how on earth anyone ever managed to build it there.

Looking from the land, the coast of Cornwall is dotted with magni cent beaches, beautiful bays and spectacular headlands; somewhere to explore, enjoy the sun and maybe picnic on a warm day. But from the sea, its a very different story. In the days of sail the weary mariner would see inhospitable beaches with vicious surf, bays waiting to trap him in an on-shore wind, and forbidding cliffs offering no hope of rescue if he was driven under them. And just under the

sea, plenty of rocks and small islands ready to tear the bottom off his boat if he ventured too close. There have been nearly 1000 known wrecks around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly plus countless unknown ones. With just a few rudimentary lighthouses and beacons about, it was the Victorians who really perfected the lighthouse builders art, especially around the Cornish coast.

We can only stand and marvel at the bravery of the men who built them and then the lighthouse keepers who lived in them, generally four weeks on and four weeks off but that would depend heavily on the weather. If the relief boat couldnt reach them because of the poor conditions, then they had to stay there are plenty of tales of men living on the lighthouse for 12 weeks or more! The life on a lighthouse was monotonous with watches 24/7, cleaning the light, maintenance, cooking, and so on, with the occasional burst of action and danger, rescuing crew whose

words by: Mandy Milanoships hit the rocks. It all adds to the wonder and majesty of a lighthouse.

And they make for a wonderful destination; wherever you are in Cornwall its worth a trip out to see a lighthouse. The views will be spectacular, there is always a bit of the coast path to walk along and maybe a secluded beach to sit and ponder on; with a cosy pub or caf for some well-earned food and drink. All lighthouses are privately owned by Trinity House and the public do not have an automatic right of access lighthouses are not funded by taxes or rates but by Light Dues paid by ships entering and leaving ports. Some do open to the public and they all make a stunning backdrop for a photo!

So, starting from the north coast and running right round the coast, including the Isles of Scilly, ending up opposite Plymouth, are the following lighthouses. Its hard to pick favourites but we have given a bit more information about some as a destination for a great walk or a visit.

Trevose Head LighthouseSituated 4 miles from Padstow and signposted from St Merryn. Like all the sites for our lighthouses, its spectacular with great coast path walking! Built in 1847 after lots of shipwrecks and many requests to Trinity House for a lighthouse. LIGHT: 1 white ash every 7.5 seconds; 20-mile range FOG SIGNAL: 2 blasts every 30 seconds

Godrevy LighthouseStanding on Godrevy Island in St Ives Bay with stunning views across the bay to St Ives. Godrevy is well worth a visit. Theres a National Trust car park with walks along the coast path to take in the views and maybe spot a seal or two on the rocks below. And, huge expanses of gorgeous, sandy beaches to relax on; the area is very popular with surfers. And, there is a great caf for drinks and delicious locally sourced food. LIGHT: Flashing white 1 second in every 10; 8-mile range FOG SIGNAL: none

Pendeen LighthouseThis lighthouse stands on the headland known as Pendeen Watch less than 2 miles from Pendeen village. On a clear dark night a keeper on watch in the lantern could just see the light from Trevose Head Lighthouse but only at low water. Apparently the earths curvature between the two places is just su cient for the rising tide to then obscure it from view! The lighthouse is open to the public. LIGHT: 4 white ashes every 15 seconds; 16-mile range FOG SIGNAL: 1 blast every 20 seconds

Longships LighthouseIts built on a small island about 1 miles from Lands End, a major tourist attraction with car park, hotel, and cafes. When the lighthouse was manned the keepers families lived in the cottages on the cliff top. The wives used to send messages to their husbands in semaphore from the upstairs windows and they could send one in return by standing in front of the white lighthouse door. LIGHT: Every 10 seconds; 15-mile range FOG SIGNAL: 1 blast every 10 seconds

Wolf Rock LighthouseLying 8 miles from Lands End, often spotted from the Scillonian on her journey to and from the Isles of Scilly. This dangerous rock was the graveyard for innumerable ships until the tower was nished in 1870. LIGHT: 1 white ash every 15 seconds; 23-mile range FOG SIGNAL: 1 blast every 30 seconds

Peninnis Head Lighthouse, Isles of ScillyThis steel trestle tower lighthouse is on the southern end of St Marys. All of the islands on the Isles of Scilly are worth exploring, with stunning turquoise waters and white sandy beaches that could be straight out of the Caribbean. When Peninnis came into service the old St Agnes Lighthouse was closed and became a private home. LIGHT: 1 white ash every 20 seconds FOG SIGNAL: none

Bishop Rock, Isles of ScillyBuilt on an isolated rock just big enough to hold it, this famous lighthouse is subject to the full force of the Atlantic storms, which have claimed so many wrecks on the Isles of Scilly. Again, this lighthouse is often spotted from the Scillonian. LIGHT: 2 white ashes every 15 seconds; 20-mile range FOG SIGNAL: disconti nued in 2007

Tater Du LighthouseIt was the tragic wreck of the Spanish ship Juan Ferrer in October 1963 with the loss of 11 lives that nally got the Tater Du Lighthouse built on this headland with the same name. This is a spectacular and rugged part of the coast path to walk. LIGHT: 3 white ashes every 15 seconds; 23-mile range FOG SIGNAL: 2 blasts every 30 seconds

Lizard LighthouseLike Godrevy, Lands End and St Anthonys this is a great destination for a day out. The coast path is relatively easy if a little hilly and there is a lovely short walk around the Lizard Point, which passes the lighthouse and Housel Bay; the new lifeboat station and the wireless station. Look out for Cornish choughs along the path to Housel Bay distinguishable from their bright red beaks and legs. Then stop off at the Wildlife Watchpoint down on Lizard Point, where friendly volunteers will help you

St Anthonys Head LighthouseAnother great day out: for a walk, to slow down and travel by ferry; two ferries! Park in Falmouth and take the ferry across to St Mawes then the even smaller little ferry across to Place. From there take the coast path up around St Anthonys Head with its spectacular views across Falmouth Bay and out to sea, plenty of sailing and boats toing and froing; look out for seals, porpoises and dolphins. Lunch in St Mawes rst or on the way back - for even more stunning views. The lighthouse marks the entrance to Falmouth Harbour. LIGHT: white isophase 15 seconds; 16-milerange FOG SIGNAL: 1 blast every 30 seconds

Eddystone LighthouseThis is the fth version of the lighthouse, which lies off the Cornish coast 8 miles from Rame Head. Not one that is easily seen from land; but worthy of a mention nonetheless. LIGHT: 2 white ashes every 10 seconds; 17-mile range FOG SIGNAL: 1 blast every 30 seconds.

So, there you are. Go take a look at one of our iconic and life saving lighthouses. Still as vital today as they ever were, to anyone on the sea; a wonderful sight for those of us on land. I defy anyone to stand on the harbour in Falmouth or out on the coast somewhere on a misty evening; and not be moved by the sight of the ash of brightness from the lighthouse and the mournful sound of the foghorn.

  • Luxury developer Acorn Blue celebrates ten years of success in Devon and Cornwall.

    28 CORNWALL LIVING

corn Blue is an independent residential-led developer which for over ten years has created award-winning residential schemes for

the owner-occupier, second home owners and investors in prime locations throughout Devon and Cornwall while catering for the local communitys needs too.

Promoting sensitive design through striking new architecture or the conversion of an existing building whilst meeting the needs of the local market, Acorn Blue has built and sold out 18 developments across the counties; from seven apartments overlooking Fistral Beach to 13 family homes in Salcombe, south Devon.

Acorn Blue continues to set itself apart from the rest. Nicola Markham, Joint Managing Director at Acorn Blue, says: Our exible bespoke approach gives us the ability to work with each site enabling us to make the most of its aspect and shape to build very well thought out properties.

By building high-quality niche developments, youll notice that none of Acorns properties are the same; regardless of size or price each home receives the same amount of attention to detail, resulting in numerous regional awards.

Testament to Acorn Blues approach of exibility, design and understanding of the local market is One Lusty Glaze in Newquay. The former hotel was an opportunity not to be missed with its commanding position sitting above Lusty Glaze Beach offering views of Newquay Bay in one direction and

Watergate Bay in another. The development of 36 one, two, three

and four-bedroom apartments and nine houses (six of which were sold to a Housing Association) was launched last September and within three months over 50% of the apartments were reserved. The site is to complete this month and based on current interest there will only be a handful of properties remaining for sale. The new homes have attracted a mix of buyers from rst time buyers (with some using the governments Help-to-Buy scheme), downsizers, second homeowners and holiday let investors.

Commenting on the local market, Nicola Markham says: Devon and Cornwall probably have the most diverse market out of Acorn Property Groups ve regions, operating in high-value prime coastal areas together with inland housing for the owner-

occupier market. There is no typical buyer but there is a common theme in that many have cherished memories of Devon and Cornwall having spent holidays here and would now like to share and make new ones with the next generation whether that is by relocating, retiring and downsizing, having a second home or investment holiday home.

Acorn Blue has some very exciting new projects in the pipeline across the south west, the most highly anticipated being The Dunes in the village of Perranporth; one of Cornwalls sur ng hotspots and home to the UKs only bar on the beach and the renowned Watering Hole. The former hotel site overlooks Perranporth beach and its three miles of golden sand and the new development will offer 40 one, two, three and four-bedroom beachside properties along with a unique opportunity to let a restaurant with a large west-facing terrace

in Cornwall, you want to make it the best it can be. Living or holidaying in this beautiful county is inspiring; the colours and textures of Cornish landscapes translate beautifully onto walls, shelves, sofas and windows. If youre looking to bring decorating ideas to life, the talented Homeshed design team are there to help you realise your propertys potential.

Homesheds interior designer, Charlotte, has extensive experience working in Cornwall; she has her fi nger on the pulse of coast and country trends and a wealth of inspiration to hand at Homeshed. This family-run, Cornish lifestyle interiors store has an impressive selection of fl ooring, carpets, living, dining and bedroom furniture, accessories and soft furnishings quite literally, everything under one roof.

So, if you dont know where to start with your project, you may just need a helping hand from Charlotte to piece together your ideas on colour schemes and soft furnishings. Alternatively, Homeshed can take it up a notch and create a full design specifi cation for you, or, if youre pushed for time, take on the project management entirely. Homeshed

offers a range of design packages, each tailored to your individual requirements.

Get inspiredThe Get Inspired package begins with a free consultation either in-store or at your property. Youll have a detailed discussion with Charlotte, enabling her to gain an understanding of what it is you would like to create in your space. From there, Charlotte will create concept boards showcasing the overall look and feel, including colours, fi nishes, fabrics, wallpapers and furniture. At this stage you can either purchase the concept boards and go ahead with the design yourself, or decide to Get Creative or Get It Done.

Get creativeThis package includes Get Inspired as a stage, together with a detailed overview and a clear room-by-room schedule for all fi nishes, colours, fabrics, wallpapers, fi ttings and furniture. This is the schedule that your chosen tradespeople will be able to work from, ensuring that every aspect of your interior has a tight specifi cation and allowing design ideas to come to life.

From ordering products and liaising with your chosen contractors, to being on hand throughout the project, Charlotte will ensure the quality and overall design brief is met on time and on budget. Homeshed can even organise the right tradespeople for the job.

If youre wondering how much this all costs, the answer is: not as much as you think. Your initial consultation is free and, because Homeshed has excellent relationships with its suppliers, costs can be kept in line with budget. Every property is different and the size of the project will inevitably dictate the cost; your proposal will take all these components into consideration, so there will be an easy to follow plan producing an end result of exactly what you want.

To get the creative ball rolling, Charlotte has shared some of her favourite ideas, colours and styles, to inspire and keep us up to date with current design trends

Formal or informal dining areas are a timeless feature in the home, creating a space for family to get together over mealtimes. It doesnt always have to be in a separate room, a beautifully designed dining space is just as special. Trending now is this Scandinavian, coastal style wooden table and chairs, with smooth and curved lines, available in plain wood or with a painted surface.

An interest in soft coastal colours for bedrooms this year sees a move away from bright seaside hues and a move towards muted, gentle tones in both fabrics and wallpapers.

  • Advice

Currently more than one in six of all mortgage borrowers are paying their lenders standard variable rate (SVR) and paying

above 3% interest on their mortgage. The average SVR is 4.82%, whilst a two-year fixed rate mortgage could be over 2% lower so 1.9 million mortgage borrowers in the UK could be saving money every month on their mortgage!

According to an HSBC report in November 2015, homeowners on an SVR mortgage are possibly paying 4,000 a year (329 a month) more on average than if they xed their mortgage.

Therefore, and possibly irrespective of whenever the bank rate may start to rise, if you are paying your lenders standard variable rate of interest, it could make sense for you to establish if they can take advantage of the mortgage deals presently on offer.

Not sure if you could remortgage?Due to the nancial crisis and the tougher lending criteria that now exist due to recent regulatory changes, a sizeable number of people on SVRs may be mortgage prisoners, says Matt. In short, these are people who feel they are unable to move house or remortgage due to changes in their personal or nancial circumstances since initially taking out the loan, such as lower earnings or divorce, he explains.

Sound familiar? If you think that you fall into this camp, it makes sense to

take professional advice, as Matt and the team may be able to identify a viable remortgaging option for you or consider alternative ways to raise the funds. With so many lenders in the market place with different lending criteria, being turned down by one lender doesnt mean that you would be unsuccessful elsewhere. Additionally, the lenders themselves are continually amending their own interpretation of the rules, which may also work in your favour. Plus, the average UK house price has risen by almost 21% (around 34,000) over the last three years to about 197,000, which may work to your advantage and give you some wriggle room against the deal you previously took out. (Source: Nationwide, House Prices, Q4 2015 vs Q4 2012)

  • We drop by The Lizard Lifeboat Station to discover more about the inspiring work of the RNLI.

    Lifestyle

rriving at The Lizard Lifeboat Station is like stumbling upon a top-secret base from Thunderbirds in every sense. Were privileged

to climb into a small metal cage hugging the sheer cliff face and slowly descend 50 metres or so, to reach the ultra-high-tech, wave-shaped building, cleverly concealed in the natural rocky Kilcobben cove below.

Entering the building does nothing to dampen this feeling. Taking centre stage is a 31-ton, 2.7 million, state-of-the-art vessel, flanked by a veranda set over three levels, with uniformed personnel occasionally scurrying into various side rooms. The stations huge metal doors open wide onto the waves below, framing a matchless view across the Channel and Celtic Sea. The imposing, self-righting, all-weather Tamar Class lifeboat sits poised on a purpose-built pneumatic pivot, waiting for the signal; ready to slide down the slipway into the depths below.

The stations very existence, in this remote, tricky-to-access location, is a testament to human endeavour. From the fundraising, to the design and build, right through to its operation almost everything about it represents a huge feat of engineering, from the large scale, down to the tiniest detail.

Were here on a sublime Tuesday evening to witness its launch for a routine training exercise. Lifeboat Operations Manager Ned Nuzum greets us warmly, introducing us to Coxswain, Andrew Putt; Chairman, Dr Chris Cuff, and resident photographer Geoff Squibb. As he shows us around, Chris speaks with pride of the station and crew. The kit has to be right no corner cutting, he says. If were sending crews out to sea, often in challenging conditions, we need to provide them with the best kit possible.

The new station is the latest in a long line to have operated out of The Lizard over the years. Lifeboats of the peninsula still hold the RNLIs record for the largest number of people rescued in a single operation. In March 1907, Lifeboat crews from Cadgwith, Coverack, Porthleven and The Lizard rowed out for a staggering 16-hours straight to rescue 456 of the passengers and crew aboard

the liner SS Suevic, having foundered on the rocks, close to Lizard Point.

Both Chris and Ned are keen to emphasise that they dont operate in isolation, highlighting the wider role of the RNLI. Its just one of 237 lifeboat stations across the UK, and the 15 across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, all working tirelessly to keep our shores safe. And then there are the 200 or more RNLI lifeguarded beaches too.

Being a charity, the RNLI relies critically on donations and the generosity of others, with fundraising playing an integral role. Neighbouring station Penlee, for example, is currently carrying out an appeal for funds towards the building of a new lifeboat station, updating the facilities and creating a visitor centre to highlight Penlees rich heritage. You can help by visiting: www.rnli-penleelifeboat.org.uk/appeal

While traditionally crews have been made up largely of shermen, these days the recruitment pool is surprisingly diverse, as Chris explains. The RNLI is a broad church organisation, encompassing members from all walks of life. The fl ipside, however, is that new volunteers dont necessarily have existing maritime experience to draw upon, necessitating intense training programmes and rst-class facilities.

The Lizards Coxswain, Andrew Putt, who has been with the RNLI for 31 years, explains the qualities needed in volunteers: Commitment without recognition; someone whos keen to get up in the middle of the night to go to the aid of others. Its an inclusive spirit whether man or woman,

    Station to station

young or old, provided you can meet the challenging physical and emotional demands, you can step aboard.

The Lizard needs seven crew afl oat and six shore crew, in order to successfully launch, drawing on a rotation of around 37 operational volunteers. Its an incredible sight watching the boat slide down into the water, each crew member well-drilled in their respective roles. Naturally, keeping up competency is essential crew have to complete at least one exercise per month to ensure the entire roster is fully skilled, regardless of who is called upon on any given day.

But there are so many ways to make a difference, other than those at the sharp edge. As Ned emphasises, If you want to volunteer in any capacity, whether boat crew, shore crew, boathouse guide and more, the opportunity is there to get involved. Of course, theres another, very simple way in which we can all help: stay smart, respect the water, avoid needlessly dangerous situations, swim only on lifeguarded beaches, and follow the RNLIs safety tips on their website. Our visit to the station is a small reminder of the wonderful work carried out by the RNLI, the resolve of those involved, and how important it is for us all to get behind this indispensable national institution. Keep up the good work!

hether your existing heating system is due to be replaced or youre looking for a cleaner, more cost-effective way of

heating your home, most homeowners are familiar with traditional solutions but arent aware of renewable technologies and the bene ts they offer.

This was certainly the case for GreenGenUKs most recent recipient of an air source heat pump. The Porthleven-based customer was looking to replace their existing oil boiler, having grown frustrated with its running costs and performance. Having considering various solutions, the concept of an air source heat pump was put forward.

Intrigued by the concept but with little knowledge on what to expect, the customer contacted the Helston-based company for more information. Following a free site survey, GreenGenUK provided a full breakdown of the installation, the costs and the potential bene ts of their renewable heating installation.

As the customer previously heated with oil, one of the more expensive fossil fuels, a signi cant energy saving could be made. In addition, thanks to GreenGens MCS accreditation, the installation would be eligible for a hefty incentive through the governments Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. They also learned that switching to air source heating would have numerous

other bene ts, not least enhanced living comfort and heat quality.

In contrast to an oil system, the proposed air source heat pump would generate heat at lower temperatures for longer periods of time, leading to a more natural living environment with property temperatures kept constant instead of regular rise and falls. Furthermore, switching to a heat pump system removed the need for oil deliveries and eliminated the risk of running out of stocks.

GreenGenUK took care of everything, handling the installation of the unit and the required upgrades to the wet heating system, along with assisting with all the paperwork. The completed project took little over a week and the customer was never without heating and hot water. The client has since gone on to advocate air source heating and GreenGenUK to a number of friends and neighbours.
