    Background

While corn plays many roles in the lives of people all over the world, it is most recognized as one of our favoriteingredients or better yet, simply eaten straight o the cob. Besides sweet corn, which accounts for only onepercent of the corn grown in Iowa, ield corn is instrumental in feeding our livestock, producing ethanol to fuel ourcars and creating over 4,000 everyday products.

For nearly two decades, Iowa has produced the largest corn crop of any state. The Des Moines Register recentlyreported that Iowa once again retains its title as the nations leading corn producer. Forecasts from the USDAestimated Iowas 2012 production igures would come in around 1.9 billion bushels. According to the IowaRenewable Fuels Association, we are also the leading producer of renewable fuel with over 4 billion gallons ofethanol gasoline produced annually. Iowa corn has a huge economic impact on our state.
