DENMAN COMMUNITY GARDEN Keira, Georga, Ella, Haydon and Max enjoyed a
lovely morning with Mrs Druitt harvesting produce at the Denman Community Garden
ready for Saturday’s markets. Students loved picking beetroot, herbs, beans, citrus and
onions! Thank you to the amazing volunteers at the
Denman Community Garden for allowing us to be a part of this fantastic local initiative. We look forward to our next visit in July!
TRIP TO DENMAN COMMUNITY GARDEN
Grab some fresh food. A garden is a great place. Relax and eat healthy food. Delicious fruit and veg is yummy! Eat a juicy mini tomato that EXPLODES in your mouth. Now we are done and need to go back to school, thanks we say and off we go - KEIRA
TRIP TO THE DENMAN COMMUNITY
GARDEN Great food to enjoy A beautiful garden to relax Relax and pick some fruit and veg Delicious food to enjoy Enjoy the beautiful smells Now go to school and tell the teacher what you learnt - HAYDON
THE SMELLS
The lemon grass, lemon and limes had an amazing smell to them. My favourite smell was the curry leaves they smelt like spicy noodles.
THE TASTES The weirdest taste was the spring onion My favourite taste was the grapefruit, it was very sour and the size of a bowl.
THE PLANTS There were lots of fruit and vegetables like lemon grass, curry leaves, rosemary, lemons, limes, mandarins and lots more amazing things.
WHAT I LEARNT I learnt there is a difference between broccoli and broccolini. The broccolini has longer leaves and branches when it’s in the ground. Broccoli has shorter leaves and stems. Big thankyou to the Denman community gardeners for letting us help them harvest the food and letting us be there. There were so many fruit and vegetables and we hope we can come again. Thank you to Mandy, Snez and Amber, we had so much fun. Georga
BEANIES 4 BRAIN CANCER Denman Public School will participate in the 2019 Beanies for Brain Cancer Day on Thursday 13th June. Students are able to trade their hats for beanies for the day, dress out of uniform, make a gold coin donation and/or purchase an official Mark Hughes Foundation beanie (MHF). Beanies are available to purchase at the school office for $25.00 each. The MHF is a Newcastle charity formed by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Mark’s diagnosis with Brain Cancer in 2014. The foundation’s mission is to raise much needed funds for research, create awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families. Brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths in children and adults aged under 40 in Australia! For more information on the Mark Hughes Foundation please visit: https://markhughesfoundation.com.au
SPORTS REPORT Cricket Our cricketers played their Round 3 match of the PSSA knockout competition against Singleton PS today on the back oval. Results will be published in next week’s newsletter. Athletics Tomorrow, students in Years 2-6 will attend their final athletics training session with Tim from Athletics Australia. They will walk to the Denman Football Oval to learn skills and tips for competing in High Jump and Long Jump. Students have thoroughly enjoyed the weekly sessions with Tim and have improved their skills and knowledge of athletics events in preparation for our school athletics carnival on Friday 21st June. Permission notes for the carnival have been sent home this week. Please return notes promptly to assist teachers with organisation of the carnival.
Wellbeing Window
Last Tuesday Denman Public School welcomed Tracy Ward, Sustainability Officer from Muswellbrook
Shire Council and Rebecca Byrnes, from the Muswellbrook Girl Guides to discuss the ‘Car Litter
Program’ - helping organisations be more sustainable.
Muswellbrook Girl Guides, with the support of Council, having been making car litter packs to
distribute to local families to encourage the reduction of litter.
This is part of a NSW Government funded, Muswellbrook Shire Council run “Don’t be a Tosser”
project.
CONGRATULATIONS DPS We are delighted to announce that Denman Public School has achieved the status of a Healthy School Canteen. The NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy is a key initiative to support the Premier’s Priority to tackle childhood obesity. Having a healthy canteen means that students are more likely to develop healthy eating habits that will have a long-term impact on improving their lives. All schools in NSW are required to implement the Healthy Canteen Strategy by the end of 2019. We would like to acknowledge and thank Simone George and Sally Randle for their hard work in updating and adapting our canteen menu to ensure it met the stringent requirements of the strategy. A big thank you also to all our canteen volunteers for your great work to support our students.
