Editorial

Welcome to 2014. All at the CVN wish all our readers and contributors a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

However the year has got off to a bad start with the news that our Post Office is to be reorganised by Post Office Ltd. I am writing this too soon to be able to tell you exactly what the Parish Council is planning to do about this, but we intend to fight the closure as far as possible.

Timescales are short as the required 6 week consultation period is likely to start in early January. To meet this timeframe the Council will by now have held a meeting with key interested parties such as the National Trust, Traders, and Ian himself. Our intention will be to keep Ian and the Post Office as it is now, if it is at all humanly possible. We will get as many people as possible engaged to achieve this. Amongst others, we will involve our MP, Richard Drax and our County Councillor, Mike Lovell.

We will hope to have a public meeting before the consultation starts, so everyone can have their say.

Stephen

DECEMBER AT THE PARISH COUNCIL

The Council understands Purbeck District Council decided not to go any further in respect of the proposed merger with East Dorset and Christchurch Local Authorities. The savings were not easily identified and the District Council has no further interest in this arrangement.

Councillors were pleased to find the Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Dorset at English Heritage has taken an interest in the storage of road chippings on the Church Knowle Road lay-by. This is designated as an operational storage area by the County Council but the Inspector says the area is within the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Corfe Castle. As such any works affecting or altering the monument require prior Scheduled Monument Consent from the Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport. The definition of 'works' includes tipping, dumping and storage of materials and under the 1979 Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act, it is a criminal offence to undertake works without the necessary consent. He was not aware of an existing consent for the storage on the lay-by and supports the removal of this material from the site within the scheduled monument, both to resolve the unauthorised tipping here, and as a benefit to the setting and appearance of the monument and to its public amenity and value.

Byway 70 on West Hill, Corfe Castle is still being monitored regularly by the Parish Council and I am pleased to report little apparent damage has been caused so far by the vehicular use of the former bridleway. There has, however, been some use of adjacent footpaths by vehicular traffic and the Councillors will keep a look out for this and incidents will be reported to Dorset County Council.

Southern Electric Contracting (SEC) should have done the remaining work in East Street, Corfe Castle before you read this item and the village will have experienced some disruption because of the traffic management required. Residents may also have noticed the effect of the early hours street light switch-off equipment which is being introduced throughout Purbeck during the month of December. SEC are converting around 1,600 lights to switch off between approximately midnight and 5.30am GMT (1am and 6.30am BST). The lights will come back on again in the morning only if it is still dark. Lights will remain lit all night on main roads, within town centres and on roads with any speed humps.

The Council considers all planning applications and submits comments to the District Council. The Parish Council had no objection to proposals for the following: The erection of rear and side extensions to existing

7

detached ancillary accommodation at Stag Manor, Norden. The Parish Council suggests the applicant should comply fully with the terms of the lawful development certificate and that this accommodation should not become a separate dwelling. The installation of secondary glazing, the removal of infill to the fireplace and the fitting of a wood burner and liner. The installation of a fire door to the top floor at 35 East Street, Corfe Castle. The insertion of a dormer window in the rear elevation and the erection of a detached garden room at 9 Townsend Road, Corfe Castle. The renovation and refurbishment of an existing building, a change of use to mixed commercial workshop and caretakers flat and the laying out of car parking at The Tin Barn, Tabbits Hill Lane, Corfe Castle. The Parish Council suggests the caretakers flat should only be used in conjunction with the business.

The Parish Council wishes everyone a happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.

Jeff Dunn, Parish Clerk (phone 555266)(e-mail [email protected]) - 8 Old Kiln Road, Ridge, Wareham BH20 5BY. The Parish Council meets on the second Monday of each month at 7pm in the Town Hall, West Street*. Have your say at the start of the meeting, speak to any parish councillor, or write to me. Full minutes of the meetings are available in Corfe Castle library or on the Website (www.corfecastlepc.org.uk). [*Sometimes elsewhere.]

The next Parish Council Meeting is on the 13th January in the Town Hall.

NEWS FROM CHURCH KNOWLE PARISH COUNCIL

10

We apologise to our readers for the format of this article due to the indispostion of our Clerk who is recovering from Surgery, and whilst unable to drive the computer he was able to attend the meeting as”The Proper

Cllr Hazel Parker welcomed Mr. Childs – representative of the Purbeck District Council who gave an insight into the Purbeck local plan and its partial review of the settlement boundary. Four elements – two for information – the local plan which was agreed at the end of 2012, neighbourhood plans and Affordable Housing supplementary planning document adopted in April 2013.There is a new system introduced by the Govt – neighbourhood plans will have some costs which vary according to how broad the plan may be and how many policies it includes. There is a Govt grant available up to £7,000 and in addition PDC offer a grant of up to £5,000 depending upon the work which will be undertaken. The District Council are also happy to support the process through ! There is however no obligation to have a Neighbourhood Plan. Arne Parish and West Lulworth have shown interest. Cllr Parker sought costs of plan but Mr !"#$in time and people in the Community may be able to help directly which would help with the costs. Only a few plans have been completed so far. Cllr Bugler ""%Depending upon what issues are to be addressed and there are other ways but &'" $in overall favour and then the plan can then become a Statutory Plan. Cllr ( ""%our previous plan which had not come to fruition. Mr. Childs advised the plan would have to conform with National planning guidelines and could not directly contradict this. Cllr Page was concerned regarding the potential to be involved in a lot of work with no outcome – e.g. the things we would like to do would be ignored in favour of the wishes of others. It would be much better if we could "!with more idea of what our aspirations may be – clearly it would however have to be in everyones interest. Cllr Higgins asked if there was a facility within the "$)*+-/%

""i.e. all or part and then consider which issues we would like to address – the process would be about giving us more options and input but nevertheless there are still regulations which have to be borne in mind as well. Mr. Childs advised within the parameters there would be some options.

!"$'"#'has been produced adding a bit more detail and intended to help deliver across the District. There are 2 parts which are a change from the past – potential for rural exception sites outside settlement boundary i.e. in the country side in planning terms. In the past the sites had to be 100% affordable but also +""$""'self build affordable homes which is quite new. There are requirements such as households have to be on Council Housing Register and the applicant must source the site and have funding. The land would have to be not more than 1.0 hectare and less than £10,000. The property must be in perpetuitary. The "$" "!( #Association would potentially have several properties for sale and would that become a potential second home? He expressed concern at the prospect "$ outcome being in control. Landowners will be key as it is not necessarily a straightforward process.

Moving on to the local plan adopted at the end of last year – not all of the ""through” this however is slightly earlier The main area being looked at is the 689The inspector has asked for a review to consider a higher level and so it is not clear if the level will rise and if so, by how many overall. There are a whole series of factors to be taken into account. There are no particular settlements in mind at present but the plan lays out hierarchy starting with towns but there has been no work on this at the moment. Each settlement has its own needs + " &':;for general options, then the next round a year later in 2015 and it is hoped the "'"896<896= " being looked at in the next 4 years or so. Cllr Parker asked if there was any preferred area, the response being planning for Wareham Worgret Road for 154 units. Cllr Edwards quizzed the potential of supermarket applications,

12

Mr. Childs indicated this would not be a favourite option. The plan would choose an option of housing in preference. Cllr Parker asked about Sandford and Holton Heath proposals, Mr. Childs indicated constraints of 400m buffer zone around heathland which may include employment options for Holton Heath. Cllr Parker asked about proposals for infrastructure and received the response improvements had already been made at the Bakers Arms Roundabout, cycle routes and the potential for Swanage Railway. Mr. Childs said it was unlikely a road scheme would be appropriate such as a Sandford Bypass. (More congestion seems inevitable) The houses which have been approved have not yet been built. Other sites for proposed new housing, 70 houses at Upton on the edge due to limited options, 50 new dwellings at Lytchett Matravers, Huntick Road and 50 houses at Bere Regis. The Bere Regis neighbourhood plan is looking to identify a location for them. This is an example of local people having direct input.

  – these show settlement boundary, employment sites etc., and will be looked at through the partial review where any changes will have to be consulted on and follow the same timetable. It will result in new maps which may or may not show the new boundaries. In turning to the Church Knowle boundary, Mr. Childs said it was hoped it would be the same everywhere but with local circumstances taken into account and this was illustrated by reference to the map. It is not to say no development can take place outside of the settlement boundary, not every village in Purbeck has a boundary but CK does. It is hoped is therefore desirable to have a uniform view. It is not intended to introduce any new settlement boundaries ,but if there is one without a settlement boundary at Cllr Parker asked what the issue is if a boundary is to be removed, Mr. Childs indicated there would have to be a very clear rationale to remove a boundary.

         ! agreed.

Planning issues came next with a tree application at Jubilee Cottage, Creech "#Blacksmiths Shop, Grange Rd. Creech, to demolish existing building, erect extension to existing workshop and change use of vacant building to "

Highways next on the list with it being reported that two silver Birch at Green Pond are in danger of falling on the highway and suggested steps taken to remedy this. The saga of the Badgers at Bucknowle continues. DCC have excavated the road and with the permission of Natural England have incorporated concrete verge foundations to stop the badgers from burrowing $ %&$'further along, so, watch this space!!

A report was given by Cllr Burt who had attended a meeting in Swanage with The Police and Crime Commissioner, Martin Underhill. Cllr. Burt advised members that we were asked to consider inviting members of the Police to our Parish Meeting to listen and consider some of the issues we have long & + " $ regard to speed cycle racers and he would also come to a meeting. Cllr Burt also asked for information regarding risk assessments but did not receive a robust response. John Mccarthy has been asked by Martin Underhill to address Church Knowle Parish Council from the PACT point of view. Cllr Burt gave the meeting and commented it was most interesting. Concern still remains %' information and consultation with the organisers of these events sometimes there being as many as 500 cyclists.

The accounts were presented and authority given to pay outstanding invoices and were all in good order.

%$-/"'used to purchase two Trees. A Weeping Beech (Purple) has been planted at East Creech by the memorial to The Creech Barrow Seven and a Purple Fountain Beech will be planted at the Village Green at Church Knowle both to commemerate The Diamond Jubilee. The next meeting of Church Knowle parish Council will be held in The Reading Room, Church Knowle on the 14th January 2014.

We wish all our readers a happy and prosperous New Year.

The National Trust is rolling out a plan to improve infrastructure for off-road cycling in Purbeck while reducing the potential for conflict between cyclists and others in the countryside. Two waymarked routes will link Corfe Castle, Studland and the Sandbanks chain ferry using existing bridleways already popular with cyclists. At the same time, measures will be put in place to improve

conflict ‘hot spots’. These could include gates dividing bridleways, which cyclists are entitled to use, from footpaths, which they are not. Another possibility is a kind of traffic calming to slow down bikes where cycling and walking routes intersect. The existing Rempstone Ride from the Ferry Road in Studland to Norden will meanwhile be upgraded where it passes over National Trust land. A second route, yet to be finalised, will link Corfe Castle and the Studland peninsula via Nine Barrow Down and Godlingston Heath. Both routes will feature two-way gates which close automatically once cyclists have passed through and surfaces designed for safety while retaining an element of challenge. The routes will be waymarked and the Trust will work with other organisations to manage and promote them. “The idea is to make these routes as cycle friendly as possible”, said Area

Ranger P “We won’t be creating any more paths, we’ll be using bridleways which are

already popular with cyclists.” Areas of conflict already identified following consultation with the public were mostly concentrated around Studland village, said Phil. “What we have to do is look at all the means we have to tackle those

problems,” he added. The plans are due to be finalised during the first half of next year with work on the key routes and hot spot mitigation expected to begin in June. This work is part of a three-year cycling strategy. Corfe Castle is celebrating success in the Bournemouth Tourism Awards. The castle won Tourism Attraction Experience of the Year for the Medieval Village re-enactment event last summer. “I think the team did very well delivering such a great experience in only the second year of running the event,” said castle Operations manager Andrew

Eustace,

“It just highlights the great work we are doing in the South West bringing

places to life.” The team also scored a highly commended in the Best Evening Experience category for Medieval Falconry and Jousting. The awards were announced on Thursday November 2.

December’s Meeting was a very merry gathering in a hall filled with heaps of greenery from gardens and woods as we set to work to weave our ivy wreaths under Penny Barker’s expert guidance. The variety was impressive: extra large to teeny wee rings of intertwined ivy threaded with berries and shrubs, holly and hydrangea, fir cones, flowers, ribbons and bibbons. You name it, we used it and the results were a joy to see. Penny had told us that we were not seeking 100% perfection but she certainly achieved 100% for an enjoyable afternoon. We had Christmas treats with our tea and a lovely time shopping at Stella’s and Patti’s Festive Stalls and agreed that our last meeting of 2013 had been an all round success! Many thanks to Penny for the workshop and for donating her speaker’s fee to our Charity Fund. MEMO for the January Meeting If you are planning to join the outing on Tuesday 20th May on a horse drawn canal boat from Hungerford to Kintbury the price of £30 can be paid at our January meeting when Eileen will begin taking money so remember to BRING YOUR CHEQUE BOOKS. This price includes the coach trip, a morning visit to Newbury and afternoon tea on the boat. New Committee Members We need two new committee members in March so please let Margery know if you would be willing to join. It’s fun! Party on 4th Jan: Twelve Days of Christmas There will be a Wassail Punch to greet you on arrival followed by a three-course meal provided by the Model Village. Coffee and fruit cake will follow and we will be entertained by a mummers group. Members may bring one guest each. Our Charity Fund has reached £1,965.91. In January we will be asking for suggestions for next year’s charity. CORFE CASTLE

We want to keep our message fresh, relevant and hopefully interesting!

So, here’s the question......

Excepting families with young children and those whose little darlings have been to the Pre-School in recent years, what percentage of the CVN readership know exactly where the Pre-School is, how it is managed and funded (and by whom), thriving Pre-School is such a vitally important element in the life of our village and the much wider community as a whole?

Over the coming months we’ll endeavor to throw some light on these and many more questions and give our readership a little insight into the workings and structure of the wonderful Corfe Castle Community Pre-School!

Following are the monthly reports from our various activity groups, but, beforeI sign off, I would like to leave you with this thought.....

that we’ll all be relying on in a few years time to look after us in our old age and, hopefully, keep the country running!

" every one of them the very best possible start that we can:-

And so the Pre-School ‘story’ begins right here...........

Emma Lacey (Pre-School Parents Management Committee Chair)

Hello there! This month heralds a very gentle shift in how we, the Parents Management Committee at Corfe CastleCommunity Pre-School, convey our news and thoughts tothe Corfe Valley News readership and the wider worldbeyond!

Why?.... Well, every once in a while the changes have to be rung, albeit quietly, in order to keep engaged with those who might otherwise turn the page and therefore not read our monthly submission!

Corfe Castle Surgery News HAPPY NEW YEAR. We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and didn’t over-indulge too much!

Thank you to everyone for their patience during the implementation of our new computer system. As promised, now we are settled, I am pleased to announce that you will be able to request medication and book appointments with the doctor on-line. To do this you will need a user name and password. Please ask at Reception for further information. We have also turned on the SMS facility which allows us to text you to confirm you appointment and to remind you of your appointment. Please make sure we have your up to date contact details to allow for this. If you prefer to not receive notifications by text, please let us know. As with all benefits, there have been set backs. For those of you who are on repeat medication, you may have noticed that your “next issue due” date is many months in the future. This is a glitch that the new system has brought with it so please rest assured you will not be asked to wait for your medication. We are working on this problem but it may take a while to rectify. Sorry for any inconvenience or unnecessary worry this has caused.

Dr Claire Carson has accepted a position at a Doctors surgery closer to her home. We wish her all the very best in her new role and look forward to seeing her in the future as she has kindly offered to return to cover leave when she can. We are fortunate to have a very able replacement in Dr Sahel Hooshiar who has covered for us during the past year. She has regular appointments in the diary which you can book up until the end of March 2014. As the demand for appointments is on the increase, she will be seeing patient at the surgery two days a week.

Kind Regards Clare

From THE VILLAGE PUMP!

Corfe Castle

Did you know? Have you heard?

A ‘GOOD NEWS’ START ….. ….… TO A NEW YEAR …… It is always appreciated when the CVN Editors receive Readers’

reactions. It’s also proof that the

magazine is read! Having read the December magazine, and referring to the Village Pump item, MIKE STREETER, writes as follows, “I was very interested to read David Spiller’s memories. I recognize the names of many people involved in the early days, with whom my parents had connections. My mother’s maiden name was Joan Orchard (b. 1912 d. 2009). She worked at the sawmill during the War, where Reg was in charge. My father, Alf Streeter (b. 1910 d. 1994) moved from London at the beginning of the War, firstly to Devon and then to Corfe Castle. He lodged with the Mitchells and drove the wagon that collected timber from the sawmill for delivery. This is where my parents met and they married in 1947, a year before I came into the world. In her younger days, my mother worked at the long gone United Dairies

factory, at Corfe Castle station. After the War she took over from her mother, in running the Village Post Office in Kingston. My father went on to drive for Stan and Les Sheasby, at South Dorset Coaches. Following this, he worked for the Corfe Castle Company of George Brinton builders. Charlie Orchard was my mother’s cousin and I knew him well. He was a prominent member of the Special Constabulary, something I followed him into and served for 14 years in Wareham and Swanage. Eddie Holland was also a great friend of my parents. My Mum and Dad eventually retired to Corfe Castle, finishing their days at Uvedale Court. I was brought up in Kingston and have always worked in Purbeck. I spent 26 years at the ECC Ball Clay (now Imerys). I now work full-time with the Swanage Railway as Booking Office Supervisor. I spent some years living in the Bournemouth area, although still working at Swanage, Sadly, my second wife died about 18 months ago and it was my wish

31

to move back to Corfe Castle. In April of last year, my wish came true as I was fortunate to be allocated a bungalow in the delightful community of Springwell Close. I feel as if I have come home, with all my happy memories. I love the Christmas lights and everything about the Village.” A FULL CIRCLE …………… I popped in to visit Mike and his dog, Maggie. He is appreciatively proud and extremely happy in his

One Man and his Dog, content in their cosy Corfe Castle bungalow .... Mike Streeter has a dream come true. cosy new home. It’s as if he has

come a full circle as he recalled names of his childhood contemporaries and growing up in Kingston. That was in the days when there was a Post Office, a School, an amateur dramatic group, a youth club and welcome open days from the Scott Family at

Encombe House. From the Village School, he went on to Swanage Grammar School. He said, “I have two daughters, Diane, who works at the National Trust Shop and Lynda, with the Natwest in Wareham, and grand-children living locally. My hobbies include photography – landscape and steam railways. I really do feel that I have a dream come true.”

Welcome to Corfe Castle, Mike. We wish you many happy years ahead, back home. THE DANCING YEARS ….. In the CVN of August last year, you may recall reading the ‘Ballerina’s Story’ – that of Jo Lawrence, celebrating her 100th birthday. She had lived a long life and recounted her many interesting memories that would fill a book. Just 2 months later, on 17th October, Jo died peacefully. I mention this because, elsewhere, in this magazine, you will read of The Thanksgiving Service for the life of Jo. She was the eldest of the three Ross-Turner girls (sisters Christine Nias and Maryrose Bray) and a well-loved long-time resident of Corfe Castle. SWITCHED ON ………….. As another year dawns, the lights still twinkle, reflecting recent past events. During the 2013 festive season, the Christmas Committee recognized the unique record clocked up by Ivan Orchard, Founder Member with continuous active membership of 60 years.

This is, surely, part of Corfe Castle’s social history!

David Spiller (at the Corfe Castle Lights Switch on 30th November 2013, representing his late father Reg Spiller Founder Chairman 1953) holds the Congratulatory Certificate prior to the Christmas delivery to Ivan Orchard.

In appreciation, on his recent retirement from the Committee, a congratulatory framed certificate, featuring a diamond atop a Christmas Tree! and signed by Chairman, Monica Williams, was presented to Ivan. Denise Fuller, recently appointed Hon. Sec., was delighted to make the special delivery to Ivan, on behalf of the Committee. Appropriately, Denise represents fellow new members and this is an encouraging symbol of continuity and good luck for the

future of this Committee, which began 61 years ago. Coincidentally, in the earlier paragraphs in these pages, I have referred to Kingston past happenings. Amy, was a Kingston lass and, more than 60 years ago, attracted the eye of Ivan. What do they say about ‘Behind every good man, there is a good woman’?! True! Ivan and Amy – thank you. WORKING AT IT!! ………… Kieran Reynolds and Connor Martin, two Corfe Castle 15-year old pupils at Purbeck School, are preparing to participate in an expedition to Tanzania in 2015. Next month, we look forward to Kieran and Connor telling us more about their challenge ahead. In the meantime, they are fundraising towards this chance in a lifetime and offer enthusiastic, willing hands to do your much-needed they have published details of their aims to achieve their fundraising targets. Good Luck boys – work at it. TURNING THE PAGES ……… My goodness, here we are talking about 2015! when we have only year, 2014. We wish you all a Happy New Year and success with all your hopes and plans in the months and years ahead. Eileen and Juliet With our heads already in February!

Editor’s Note: Please submit any snippets of interest (eg: Congratulations, New Babies, Special Birthdays,Anniversaries, Local Knowledge, etc) that you may have for the publication by the 15th of each month.

CORFE CASTLE SPORTS TRUST

News from the Sports Field

Corfe Castle first team had a ‘Field Day’ with a superb 4-1 victory over close rivals Wareham Rangers, with Dave Field in great form netting all four. Corfe Dave’s three further strikes sealed the points. The following week Corfe beat

Gillingham 3-1 in a scrappy encounter at the Millennium Sports Field. The boys are unbeaten in their last seven games and have the league leaders looking nervously over their shoulders.

The reserves have also been in great goal scoring form with a 3-3 draw against Piddletrenthide followed by a 7-0 drubbing of Portland ‘B’. Jack Hector, in fine form, scored four times for Corfe. The team presently stands 5th in the league. The youngsters have also been busy with the under 16 boys claiming a 3-3 draw with Bridport, followed by a 2-1win against a well organised Lytchett Red Triangle. Jack Cluskey, better known as a goalkeeper, played in the outfield in both matches and scored three of the five goals. It looks as if he won’t be asking for the green jersey back just yet! The under 16 girls continue

to impress in the New Forest League with a 2-1 win over Southampton side, Oakford, while the under 13 girls won 3-2 which lifted them into third place. The under 12 boys are showing great spirit despite finding it tough going against some good opposition. Let’s hope the New Year brings the turn of

fortune their effort deserves.

Well Done To You All.

The Christmas Supper, held at the Village Hall at the end of November, was very well supported and raised over £700 towards the running of the facilities at the Sports Field. The eighty who attended were treated to a beautifully presented and delicious meal provided by Ed and Emily together with the staff of the Model Village. The light-hearted pig racing which continued throughout the evening was great fun and wonderful entertainment. Thanks to everyone who came and for your contribution to the success of the event.

At the supper Stephen Dru Drury presented a cheque for £232 from the Corfe Castle Twinning Committee (see picture). This was the amount left when the Twinning came to an end earlier last year after many years of successful activity with Corfe’s twinning partner, Pont Herbert in Normandy. This was gratefully received and the Twinning Association

later had a fulsome letter of thanks from the Sports Trust.

The Reverend Ian Jackson writes

Most people are familiar with the 4 gospels in the New Testament - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. These are the books which tell us about the ministry, passion and resurrection of Jesus. They are not biographies - such details are usually incidental. There is much we cannot know for sure about what Jesus said and did. However, we are clear that the first Christians, and the church communities of which they were part, passed on accounts of Jesus' teaching and his encounters with individuals and crowds, not least when he brought healing and release. This inevitably meant that differences arose between the versions and also that each community and the specific writers presented the material with their own understanding and interpretation. Such variations are a sign of authenticity.

When we think of the way the gospels were written it might seem we are suggesting that they were less than divinely inspired; that they came about in all too human a way. Far from it. God's truth is expressed through the usual processes of human life. Last month I wrote about the presence and absence of God. There are times he seems especially close - not least when we are open to him and allow him to be present among us. The scriptures are examples of this.

We rightly talk of the scriptures as the word of God and, for most people, the more we learn about how they were written the more we receive from God through them. Anne, John and I would be pleased to suggest ways of discovering more about the Bible.

As well as the 4 gospels there were others books, including gospels, written by the first Christians and churches. For various reasons the 4 we are familiar with are the ones which were included in the New Testament. This is known as the canon of scripture. So, Christians believe God spoke not only through the writers and the churches but through the way the churches agreed on what to include in the Bible, as it were.

I hope you see that the process which lead to the Bible continues today. The books of the Old and New Testament have the central place in our understanding of Christian faith. However, Christians continue to listen to God. This includes the reading of the scriptures. We also attend to what is going on around us. The things we say and write record our knowledge of God's work and presence among us now. I recently came across a church which had produced such accounts of its own life. They called it the fifth gospel! That is not heretical. It is to be hoped each Christian community has stories to tell which could go in such a book.

I hope that when you read this Christmas has been a good time for you and very best wishes for the New Year. Ian

For the last two Monday evenings, supporting the work of the Christmas Festivities Committee. We have , and will be singing again next Monday. After each carol, before we move on, we have sung “We wish you a Merry

Christmas” (three times), and I am sure you know what comes next “and a Happy New Year.”

That is how I was going to start this letter. “Happy New Year to all who read

the Corfe Valley News” and then I stopped, and wondered what we mean when we wish somebody a “Happy New Year.” We all have very different

ideas about what we mean by “Happy”. When you hear about the amount of

money spent on gambling, obviously there are those who see happiness as having far more money than they have now. Does money automatically make you happy? Are all the wealthy people happy? That is not what I hear. If I believed that, I would have stayed a Company Accountant and not become a “Rev”. Or may be it is a case of wealth helps you to be miserable in comfort!

But acquiring extra money isn’t the only way that people seek happiness.

There are those who seek happiness through consuming large quantities of alcohol or popping pills. O.K. I admit it, I am biased, because I am a tea totaller, for all sorts of reasons. But I can’t understand how anybody can

equate happiness with drugging yourself in such a way that makes you feel dreadful the following morning, or leaves you totally incapable of remembering where, and with whom, you spent this fantastic evening.

Many of the Christmas cards that you received were wishing you a “Happy

Christmas”. Did you have a “Happy Christmas”, and, if so, what was it that

made your Christmas happy? I would imagine that, for most of you, any happiness that you felt, was because of relationships. Spending time with loved ones, is a good basis for feeling happy, and loved ones don’t have to be

relatives. Two of our daughters and our five grand-daughters, will all be in Essex for Christmas, and our other daughter will be spending Christmas abroad. Chris and I will be spending our first Christmas in Corfe Castle. On the 22nd.December I will be taking the Service in the morning and then leading the Candlelight Carol Service in the evening. On Christmas Day I will be taking the service at 10.30am and then afterwards, we are looking at the g with those who will be providing a Christmas Lunch for those who would otherwise be on their own, and seeing if we can lend a hand.

Will it be a “Happy Christmas”? I don’t know. I will let you know next

month, but I am expecting it to be “A Very Happy Christmas”, because I have discovered that being “happy”, is closely linked to being content, and I can’t

50 51

think of anything that I would rather do than sharing with others, the incredible, and mind blowing Christmas story. But what about the meal and the party afterwards? I get so much pleasure and contentment from helping others, that I almost feel guilty. Giving to others is so easy, when you get so much in return.

I really must bring this letter to a close, otherwise I will be in trouble with the editor. So, let me finish by wishing you all “A Happy New Year” and if I can

help in anyway to make it happy, you only have to ask, and if I can, I will.

Rev.Barry L.Walton

Church Activities and Mid-week Meetings

Sunday Services at 10.30am.

Having taken the “I am” sayings in November, and the theme of “He is” in

December, we will be looking at “We are” in January. The idea is that we will

be looking at some of the ways that the Bible describes those who believe in Jesus as Saviour and Lord, in other words, different ways in which the Church can be described.

January 5th. “The Body of Christ” 1 Corinthians 12: 12 – 27 12th. “The Family of God” Mark 3: 31 – 34 19th. “The Flock of Christ” 1 Peter 5: 1 – 4 26th. “A Royal Priesthood” 1 Peter 2: 7 – 12

January 5th. will be both a Covenant and a Communion Service.

During the Week

Changes are taking place. The plan is that we will be holding a weekly Bible Study Meeting, possibly on a Sunday afternoon, and the weekly Prayer Meeting is likely to continue on a Monday morning. We are looking at the possibility of taking one road, street, or avenue, each week, and asking the residents if they have any particular prayer requests that they would like us to include. Please watch this space for more information.

In addition to these, we will be continuing our Fellowship gatherings every other Wednesday afternoon, but it is likely that we will be changing its name to emphasize that all are welcome. The other change is that we are hoping to make use of my wife’s

cooking skills so that we can offer a cooked meal to those who would normally be eating on their own, or to those who would welcome the company, whether they are on their own or not. Once again, watch this space or phone me to find out more details.

In addition to the above, we will be continuing our Wednesday Coffee Mornings starting at 10.30am to which everybody is welcome, whether you come to Church or not.

We believe that we are a friendly Church. Come and see if it is true, or not.

A Patron for Corfe Castle Community Library

Corfe Castle Community Library is delighted to announce that they will now have a wonderful bust of Mr Norman McKenna displayed in the Library. Mr McKenna was for many years the Chairman of the Friends of Corfe Castle Library and had been fighting for

its survival often and with tenacity. He died, aged 100 years, in August of this year. In his Memory, his family has generously given this bust of him to the newly formed Community Library.

Not only is this bust a great reminder of his illustrious life, but it was also made by one of our most respected sculptors, Mary Spencer Watson, late of Dunshay Manor. McKenna’s family had commissioned Mary to make this sculpture for his 70th Birthday.

Angelika Seik of the Friends of Corfe Castle Community Library says: ‘We are doubly proud of

having Norman with us in spirit, in a place dear to his heart. And having a reminder also of Mary’s creative

work, loved so by many of us in this area’.

The Moo Man Comes To Langton

Stephen Hook, a cattle farmer from East Sussex, is coming to Langton Matravers Village Hall on 5th February to introduce the film “The Moo Man” in which he stars. He will be joined by the film’s makers, Andy Heathcote an Heike Bacheler, to discuss with the audience their approach to trying to make a living from a small dairy herd and making a film where your supporting actors are cows. The film tells the remarkable story of Stephen and his unruly cows, made over four years on the marshes of the Pevensey Levels. In an attempt to save the family farm, Stephen decided to turn his back on the cost cutting dairies and supermarkets, and instead stay small and keep his close relationship with the herd. However his plans to save the farm did not always go down well with his 55 spirited cows. The result is a laugh-out-loud, emotional roller-coaster of a journey. The film is hosted by Langton Arthouse Cinema. The doors for the event will open at 7.00 and tickets will be £7 on the door. Glasses will be supplied should you wish to bring your own drink with you. Chris Kwantes

Langton Arthouse Cinema

Langton Arthouse Cinema’s next film, “Barbara” on 8th January at 7.30 in The Village Hall, is set in Communist East Germany in the early 1980s. The film shows the Stasi’s use of intimidation and disorientation as tools in operating a system of control and surveillance directed at those suspected of opposing the GDR. Barbara is a Berlin doctor banished to a country medical clinic for applying for an exit visa. Deeply unhappy with her reassignment and fearful that her co-workers may be Stasi informants, Barbara stays aloof, especially from the good natured clinic head, Andre. Instead, Barbara snatches moments with her lover as she secretly prepares to defect. Despite her plans, Barbara learns more about her life that puts her desires and the people around her in a new light. With her changing perspective she finds herself facing a painful moral dilemma that forces her to choose what she values most. The film is in German with English subtitles. Tickets will be £5 on the door which will open at 7.00pm. Glasses will be supplied should you wish to bring your own drink with you. If you want to be kept informed about future films you can add your name to the mailing list by emailing [email protected] or visit www. LangtonArthouseCinema.co.uk. Chris Kwantes

Worried about the rising cost of energy at home? Think Renewables

Whatever our politicians may say it seems unlikely that the cost of fossil fuel is going anywhere but up in the future. So the most important way to cut your energy bills is to use less fuel in the first place. This means 200mm of insulation in your attic, cavity wall insulation, and double glazing. Other low tech fixes like a good underlay underneath your carpet, and lined curtains on the windows will also keep heat in and bills down.

To help with the cost various schemes are available, such as the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme for those on a low income (which is what the big six energy companies are complaining about so bitterly). For those that do not qualify there is the Green Deal.

The simplest renewable used by many in Purbeck is a wood fire, but remember that a modern log burner is much more efficient than an open fire. After that there are various technologies available to enable householders to produce power to heat and light their homes, and some qualify for attractive subsidy payments from the Government such as;

solar photovoltaics (electricity) solar thermal (heating and hot water) air and ground source heat pumps (heating and hot water) wood pellet boilers (heating and hot water).

My own specialism is solar pv. If you install a system through a Microgentration Certification Scheme (MCS) installer such as myself twenty years of government subsidy payments are available.

Most of the other technologies will soon also attract a subsidy through the Renewable Heat Incentive, due to start in 2014 for domestic installations, again so long as you use an MCS installer. Help with the cost may well be available through the Green Deal, both for home owners, landlords and other businesses. More information is available on the web. I have a list of useful resources available at http://www.redkiteelectrical.co.uk/renewablelinks.html - Richard Hall

We NEED you! Have you ever thought about becoming an on-call firefighter

with Dorset Fire and Rescue?

Fire stations across Dorset are recruiting for on-call firefighters – a part-time job which could save lives. We had a chat with Deputy Area Commander for Dorset, Craig Baker to explain what’s involved and how you can sign up.

What is an on-call/retained or part-time firefighter? An on-call firefighters is someone who is able to work part-time for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and who is able to respond to his or her local fire station when needed, to deal with an emergency. Local emergency services form an important part of our community. Firefighters do a whole range of jobs from fighting fires to helping at all sorts of incidents. As a retained firefighter you might be called to floods, road traffic collisions or chemical spills as well as fires.

What kind of person can become an on-call firefighter? Anyone can be an on-call firefighter, provided that they are over 18 and are both physically and medically fit. You do not need any formal qualifications for the job but you should have good reasoning and numeracy skills. What kind of training do you get? To begin with, you will have to complete a number of tests to show that you have the right skills and fitness to be a firefighter. If you are successful in these tests you will then be asked to attend an interview at your local station. Soon after your appointment you will have to travel to our Training Centre to complete a Basic Retained Training course. We provide ongoing training in the form of a drill night each week at your fire station.

How does the retained duty system work? You do not have to work specific hours but you must be available at agreed times of the day or night, including weekends. During the application process, you sign up to a commitment of either 90 or 120 hours each week. This doesn’t mean you have to be on duty at a fire station. You may be at work or at home with your family during this time. When you are needed for an emergency you are “alerted” and must be able to drop anything you are doing and get to the fire station within five minutes.

Will I have to deal with unpleasant situations? The nature of the work of a firefighter means that you may be asked to deal with unpleasant situations. It is difficult to train for such situations however, the training we do provide will help you prepare for and deal with an emergency. What will I get out of it? Joining us as a retained firefighter offers a wealth of opportunity to work for your local community on a part time basis. The job gives you an opportunity to help your friends or neighbours in an emergency in a very real and practical way. There are also financial rewards; you will receive an annual retainer that is based on the level of cover you are able to provide. An hourly rate is paid for training and responding to an emergency. In addition, you are paid a disturbance fee when you respond to an emergency.

How do I apply? Full details of the role of an on-call firefighter together with an application form can be found on our website; www.dorsetfire.gov.uk. If you would like any further information please visit your local fire station.
