Can you hear whats being said? Selective hearing is a very common complaint amongst many couples, particularly when concerning the male half and their spouses. Although we may all joke about it in a roundabout way it is actually a very real complaint. Not in such a way that some people are selective about what they are hearing, but more so in that there are particular voices which a very large population who have a hearing loss find difficulty with.

The most common type of hearing loss amongst males over 35 is noise induced hearing loss or more commonly known as industrial deafness. This particular ailment occurs due to prolonged exposure to unsafe levels of noise such as tractors, heavy machinery, rifles, or trucks for example. Initially exposure to dangerous levels of noise causes a temporary loss of hearing, which is usually

accompanied by ringing sounds in the ears, or tinnitus.

The tiny hairs or cilia within the inner ear being flattened by the acoustic trauma cause the ringing sounds. Because of the design of the inner ear or cochlear the hairs responsible for high-pitched sounds receive the brunt of the acoustic impact and are affected the most, thus the perception of high pitched ringing. Eventually the hairs return to their original position, the hearing returns and tinnitus recedes. However, when the ear is subject to this acoustic trauma frequently the tiny hair within the inner ear will begin to die away and the hearing loss and tinnitus becomes permanent.

The permanent damage begins with the high-pitched areas, however there are usually no noticeable effects on the low-pitched areas of the inner ear. Consequently the difficulties experienced by the person with

industrial deafness are quite unique, a sufferer may have exceptional hearing in the low pitches and hear a car or plane coming from miles away, yet their mobile phone may be ringing in their pocket and they unable to hear it.

With speech it is only the high-pitched areas that are initially affected, such as the beginning and ends of words. If you remove these parts from speech then you remove all the clarity and it can sound like everyone is mumbling, or you can hear people are talking but cant understand what they are saying. Female and childrens voices are harder to pick up because they are of a higher pitch and more speech sounds are affected.

This is where the term selective hearing is relevant as someone with industrial deafness may be able to hear a male voice no problem at all due to the lower

pitched voice, yet their female partner or children have to repeat themselves several times over. This is particularly pertinent when their back is turned or talking from another room as all visual strategies that we unconsciously use to accommodate for a hearing loss such as lip reading is lost. Consequently the wife and children get frustrated because they feel that their partner or parent is not listening to them specifically, and the husband gets frustrated because they feel their partner or children are mumbling.

Fortunately with modern technology industrial deafness is now one of the easiest hearing losses to treat, clients frequently say that I have probably saved more marriages then any marriage counselor.

There are several hearing aids that can be worn safely in all environments, including on mine sites, in construction and farming.

People with a hearing impairment who work in very harsh environ-ments such as mine sites, con-struction or on farms often use the excuse that their working condi-tions are not conducive to hearing aid use. In the past this may have been true, but modern technology is now available for those working in the toughest of environments.

Devices are now on the market that are waterproof, dustproof, sweat-proof, and shockproof and can be used in the most rugged conditions without harming the hearing aids or causing them to malfunction. There are two types of dustproof/

waterproof hearing aid ratings: the IP68 rating, which is dustproof and waterproof to the point that they can be worn swimming underwa-ter, and the IP67 rating, which is dustproof and waterproof but is not classified to be worn underwater.

All the IP67/IP68 devices sit on top of the ear and the first generation released last year were quite large at about two inches long. But recently one manufacturer released an IP67 aid, which is about three-quarters of an inch, making it one of the small-est hearing aids on the market.

Lyric, which sits deep in the ear canal beyond the sweat glands and away from the dust and wind noise that traditional hearing aids suffer from. Earmuffs can be worn over the top without feedback, but the Lyric still amplifies so you can hear whatever sound comes through.

Another deep canal option is IIC (Invisible-In-the-Canal) hearing aids. They do not sit as deep as the Lyric and are not worn permanently, but they do sit far enough to be out of the wind and dust.

There are also models available that can be set up so they automatically go into a mute mode when back-ground noise reaches dangerous levels. The hearing aid then acts as an earplug, conveniently saving the wearer from having to remove and insert one.

Most hearing aids are now Blue-tooth-compatible and can be paired with any audio device such as a UHF radio, mobile, satellite phone, radio or TV. This is very useful for many of our patients who work on heavy machinery, which is not sound-proofed, and have to wear hearing protection, but still need to hear the UHF radio or site radio. With Bluetooth technology, the UHF radio is streamed wirelessly directly to the hearing aids worn under the earmuffs. Our patients hear the UHF or radio clearly, yet their hearing is still protected by the earmuffs. Whats more if they step outside a cab or away from the UHF, these can still be heard within 20m of the UHF radio.

Can you hear whats being said? Selective hearing is a very common complaint amongst many couples, particularly when concerning the male half and their spouses. Although we may all joke about it in a roundabout way it is actually a very real complaint. Not in such a way that some people are selective about what they are hearing, but more so in that there are particular voices which a very large population who have a hearing loss find difficulty with.

The most common type of hearing loss amongst males over 35 is noise induced hearing loss or more commonly known as industrial deafness. This particular ailment occurs due to prolonged exposure to unsafe levels of noise such as tractors, heavy machinery, rifles, or trucks for example. Initially exposure to dangerous levels of noise causes a temporary loss of hearing, which is usually

accompanied by ringing sounds in the ears, or tinnitus.

The tiny hairs or cilia within the inner ear being flattened by the acoustic trauma cause the ringing sounds. Because of the design of the inner ear or cochlear the hairs responsible for high-pitched sounds receive the brunt of the acoustic impact and are affected the most, thus the perception of high pitched ringing. Eventually the hairs return to their original position, the hearing returns and tinnitus recedes. However, when the ear is subject to this acoustic trauma frequently the tiny hair within the inner ear will begin to die away and the hearing loss and tinnitus becomes permanent.

The permanent damage begins with the high-pitched areas, however there are usually no noticeable effects on the low-pitched areas of the inner ear. Consequently the difficulties experienced by the person with

industrial deafness are quite unique, a sufferer may have exceptional hearing in the low pitches and hear a car or plane coming from miles away, yet their mobile phone may be ringing in their pocket and they unable to hear it.

With speech it is only the high-pitched areas that are initially affected, such as the beginning and ends of words. If you remove these parts from speech then you remove all the clarity and it can sound like everyone is mumbling, or you can hear people are talking but cant understand what they are saying. Female and childrens voices are harder to pick up because they are of a higher pitch and more speech sounds are affected.

This is where the term selective hearing is relevant as someone with industrial deafness may be able to hear a male voice no problem at all due to the lower

pitched voice, yet their female partner or children have to repeat themselves several times over. This is particularly pertinent when their back is turned or talking from another room as all visual strategies that we unconsciously use to accommodate for a hearing loss such as lip reading is lost. Consequently the wife and children get frustrated because they feel that their partner or parent is not listening to them specifically, and the husband gets frustrated because they feel their partner or children are mumbling.

Fortunately with modern technology industrial deafness is now one of the easiest hearing losses to treat, clients frequently say that I have probably saved more marriages then any marriage counselor.

There are several hearing aids that can be worn safely in all environments, including on mine sites, in construction and farming.

People with a hearing impairment who work in very harsh environ-ments such as mine sites, con-struction or on farms often use the excuse that their working condi-tions are not conducive to hearing aid use. In the past this may have been true, but modern technology is now available for those working in the toughest of environments.

Devices are now on the market that are waterproof, dustproof, sweat-proof, and shockproof and can be used in the most rugged conditions without harming the hearing aids or causing them to malfunction. There are two types of dustproof/

waterproof hearing aid ratings: the IP68 rating, which is dustproof and waterproof to the point that they can be worn swimming underwa-ter, and the IP67 rating, which is dustproof and waterproof but is not classified to be worn underwater.

All the IP67/IP68 devices sit on top of the ear and the first generation released last year were quite large at about two inches long. But recently one manufacturer released an IP67 aid, which is about three-quarters of an inch, making it one of the small-est hearing aids on the market.
