Before using for the first timeBefore using for the first time, please note the following points.

Setting the water softener(if applicable).

The water softener must be set to corre-spond to the water hardness in yourarea. This can be obtained from yourlocal water company, or by using a testkit that can be purchased from theMiele Parts Department.

The salt reservoir must only be filledwith water and salt. Never fill it withdetergent.

It is important to choose the correctprogram.

Different wash programs should be se-lected for different loads and differentdegrees of soiling. See the programchart for further program descriptions.

Add the correct amount of detergent.

Generally, one to two tablespoons ofdetergent will be adequate for mostwash loads. Not enough or too muchdetergent can lead to poor wash re-sults.

Cleaning results vary between deter-gents. If you are not satisfied with theresults from one brand, try anotherquality brand before contacting theMiele Service Department for advice.

Water softener (Not available in US models.)The water softener must be set to corre-spond to the water hardness in yourarea. This can be obtained from yourlocal water company or by using a testkit that can be purchased from theMiele Parts Department.

Note:

If the water hardness in your area isunder 7 gr/gal, it is not necessary to re-activate the softener with salt.

To avoid the build up of calcium de-posits on dishes, cutlery, and in thedishwasher, the water should be soft-ened if it is harder than 7 gr/gal.

The dishwasher is factory set for a hard-ness level of 4 - 14 gr/gal. If your wateris harder or softer, this setting will needto be adjusted.

To ensure a steady supply of soft-ened water, the built in water sof-tener must be:

1. Correctly set.

2. Reactivated with salt when depleted.

Setting the water hardnesslevel. There are six settings on the selector, lo-cated on the right side of the washcabinet:

Using a screwdriver, adjust the waterhardness level by turning the selec-tor switch to the appropriate setting.

Setting gr/gal ppm °f

1* 4-14 70- 250 7- 25

2 15-21 270- 380 27- 38

3 22-35 400- 630 40- 63

4 36-47 650- 850 65- 85

Filling the salt reservoir. The salt reservoir should be filled be-fore the first use and whenever the“Salt” indicator lamp is lit. Use watersoftener reactivation salt (1 - 4 mmgrain size), as other salts may containinsoluble additives which can impairthe functioning of the softener.

The salt reservoir holds approx. 4 lbs (2 kg) of salt.

Inadvertently filling the salt reservoirwith dishwashing detergent willdamage the water softener. Makesure that only water softener reacti-vation salt of the proper grain size isused.

Remove the lower basket.

Unscrew and remove the salt reser-voir cap.

Before filling the salt reservoir forthe first time:Fill the salt reservoir with approxi-mately 2 quarts of water.

Place the funnel (provided) over thesalt reservoir.

Carefully fill with salt. As it is filled, water will run out.

Clean any excess salt from thethreads of the reservoir opening.

Screw the cap on firmly.

If the dishwasher will not be used im-mediately after reactivation, run theRINSE & HOLD program. This willremove any traces of salt from thecabinet.

Salt indicator.

When the salt reservoir is empty, the“Salt” indicator lamp will light, notifyingyou that the reservoir should be refilledwith reactivation salt.

Note:

If your water is very soft (below 7 gr/gal), the salt indicator lamp willstay on. In this case the reservoirshould not be filled with salt. The indica-tor lamp will remain lit and can be disre-garded or bypassed.

Bypassing the Salt indicatorlamp. In order to bypass the salt indicatorlamp, you will need a screwdriver andneedle nose pliers.

Remove the salt reservoir cap.

Looking into the salt reservoir, you willsee the top of the float chamber on theright hand side b.

Using a screwdriver, carefully pivotthe float chamber towards the centerof the reservoir.

Using the needle nose pliers, firstpull the cap c off of the float cham-ber, then remove the float d.

Replace the float chamber cap, push the chamber back into its up-right position, and replace the saltreservoir cap. The indicator lampshould now remain off.

Tall, narrow, hollow pieces should beplaced in the center of the basket, rather than in the corners, to ensureadequate water coverage.

Small cups and glasses should beplaced on the cup racks. Taller mugsand glasses can be placed under-neath the rack.

The spray arms must not be blockedby items which are too tall or hangthrough the baskets. If in doubt, testfor free movement by manually rotat-ing the spray arms.

Some food items may contain naturaldyes that can discolor plastic itemsin the dishwasher ( e.g. carrots, to-matoes, ketchup, etc.). The stabilityof plastic items is not affected by thisdiscoloration.

Some loading examples are shown onthe following pages.

In areas where the water has highmineral content, it may be necess-ary to polish silverware after wash-ing to achieve a high shine.

Items not suitable for dishwashers– Cutlery with wooden handles.

– Wooden cutting boards.

– Glued items such as old knives withhandles that are glued togetheraround the shank of the blade.

– Hand made craft items.

– Copper or tin items.

– Plastic items which are not heat resis-tant.

Please note:

– Silver or aluminum items may suffersome discoloration.

– Aluminum parts (eg. oven hoodgrease filters) should not be cleanedusing commercial or industrial deter-gents. These high alkaline deter-gents may damage the machine, and in extreme instances, cause ex-plosive chemical reactions.

– Silverware previously cleaned with asilver polish may be damp orspotted at the end of a programwhere water has adhered to the pol-ish. This can be rubbed off with asoft, dry cloth. Silver that has pre-viously been cleaned in an immer-sion dip is usually dry at the end of aprogram, but may discolor (tarnish).

– Colors on dishware that have beenpainted over the glaze may fadeover time.

– Clouding may occur on glasses afterfrequent washing.

Miele recommends:

Wash delicate glassware using theECONOMY program or the CHINA &CRYSTAL program with a tempera-ture of 45 °C/115 °F (if so equipped). This will reduce the risk of clouding.

There are no standard guidelines forwashing glassware. When in doubt, wash by hand.

When purchasing new dishes andcutlery, make sure they are dish-washer safe.

Adding detergentUse only powder detergents formu-lated for residential dishwashers.Do not use gels or liquid deter-gents.

Press the latch on the detergent dis-penser. The cover will spring open.

Fill the dispenser with one to twotablespoons of powder detergent.

Close the cover. The cover will al-ways be open at the end of a washprogram (excluding the RINSE &HOLD program).

Generally, filling the dispenser with oneto two tablespoons of detergent will besufficient to ensure thorough cleaning. If dishes are extra dirty, or if the soil hasbeen allowed to dry on the dishes be-fore washing, a program utilizing a pre-wash cycle should be selected. In thiscase, extra detergent can be added tothe small compartment labeled ( I ) inthe center of the dispenser.

Dishwasher detergents contain irri-tant and corrosive ingredients. Theycan cause burns in the mouth andthroat if swallowed, or inhibit brea-thing. Keep children away fromdetergent and from the dishwasherwhen the door is open.

To avoid the danger of children com-ing into contact with dishwasherdetergent, only fill the detergent dis-penser immediately before startingthe program.

Capacities:Compartment I (prewash) takes a maxi-mum of 1 ounce (25 ml) and Compart-ment II (main wash) takes a maximumof 3 ounces (80 ml) when completelyfilled. There are horizontal marks to as-sist you in filling Compartment II. Themarks indicate a level of approximately3/4, 1, and 1 1/4 ounces (20, 25 and30 ml respectively).

Cleaning the water intake filter.

The water valve housing on the inlethose contains electrical compo-nents and should not be immersed,or run through water.

A filter is incorporated in the intakehose that is attached to the dishwa-sher’s main shutoff valve. If your watersupply is hard, or the pipes containsediment; this filter may clog and pre-vent sufficient water from entering thewash cabinet. It can be cleaned as fol-lows:

Cleaning the filter.Disconnect the dishwasher from theelectrical supply (unplug it or shut offthe circuit breaker).

Turn off the main shutoff valve andunscrew the intake hose.

Carefully remove the rubber seal.

Remove the filter using needle nosepliers and clean it by rinsing underrunning water.

Replace the filter and seal. Makesure they are seated correctly.

Screw the intake hose back onto thewater valve, making certain it is notcross-threaded.

Slowly turn on the valve and test forleaks.

Dishwasher installationThe “i” model dishwasher is speciallydesigned for installation under a con-tinuous countertop.

A panel can be custom made for instal-lation on the front of the dishwasher, as-suring a perfect match with the kitchencabinetry.

If a standard non-cabinet matchingdishwasher installation is desired, the“i” model dishwasher can be convertedinto a “U” model through the addition ofa GDU 60/65 decor kit. The decor kitcomes supplied with separate installa-tion instructions.

To ensure stability, these dish-washers should only be installedunder a continuous countertopwhich is securely fastened to thecabinet base units.

Dimensions:

1) with 35" (890 mm) machine height2) with 33 1/8" (840 mm) machine height

Range of adjustment is approximately2" (5 cm).

1. Installing the steam deflector, (if applicable).

A stainless steel plate is supplied toprotect the underside of the countertopagainst steam rising from the dish-washer when the door is opened. If thecountertop is made of Corian®, gra-nite, marble or other solid, waterproofmaterial, the steam deflector should notbe used.

Squeeze a bead of sealant from thesupplied tube into the angle formedby the curved edge b of the cover-plate.

Align the plate c with the lower frontedge of the countertop (see illustra-tion) and use the supplied tacks tonail it in place.

On countertops with wood or lami-nate edging, the tacks should benailed through the rear holes of theplate.

2. Installing the dishwasherunder the countertop.

It is preferable to install the main waterand electric supplies so that they canbe accessed through an adjacentcabinet, rather than situating them be-hind the machine. See the “Plumbing”and “Electrical” sections for proper con-nection procedures before continuing.

Certain steps in the installation proce-dures require that the dishwasher bepulled out of its opening. For this rea-son, perform the final plumbing andelectrical connections after the ma-chine has been levelled and the frontpanel has been mounted.

Install the slides.

Two slides are included and should beinstalled on the feet of the dishwasherbefore the machine is pushed underthe countertop. This will allow the ma-chine to slide easier, protect the floor, and allow adjustment of the rear level-ing legs from the front of the machine.

Place the slides, with the ratchet atthe rear, onto the dishwasher legs.

Unscrew the legs to raise the ma-chine to within 1/4" (5 mm) of theunderside of the countertop, andcheck that the machine is level, before sliding it into its opening.

Push the machine into the opening, making sure the electrical cable andhoses can reach their connectionpoints without being kinked.

Adjust the rear leveling legs to the re-quired height.

To raise the machine - turn clockwise.

To lower the machine - turn counter-clockwise.

Several turns may be needed to set thecorrect height. A low speed electric orcordless screwdriver can also be used.

Adjust the front leveling legs by push-ing on the foot with a slotted screw-driver.

Tipping the machine slightly, ifpossible, will make adjusting the frontlegs easier. Make sure the machine islevel when adjustments are complete.

The side mounting holes shouldonly be used for securing thedishwasher if the opening isexactly 23 5/8" (60 cm) wide. Useof this method on larger openingswill damage the machine andcause leaks.

8. Installing the toekick. For kitchens utilizing one continuousor a cabinet matching toekick

To prevent damaging the frontpanel, and before installing the toe-kick, measurements must be takento ensure that the toekick will not in-terfere with the complete opening ofthe dishwasher door.

The panel overhang (P), and toekickdepth of recess (R), determine the maxi-mum dishwasher toekick height (H).

If the panel contacts the toekick whilethe dishwasher door is being opened, the dishwasher toekick must be cutshorter or recessed deeper.

If (H) is equal to or less than the toekickheight of the adjoining cabinetry, no in-terference will exist, provided that (R) isat least 3/4".

Note: If a decorative or flush mount toe-kick is desired, and (R) is less than3/4", other modifications, such as beve-ling the top rear edge of the toekick, may be necessary.

For kitchens utilizing the included plas -tic toekick

The included toekick will fit withoutmodification when:– The machine is set to its maximum

height (legs fully extended), and– the toekick is recessed as far as

possible (4 ").

If the machine height is less than maxi-mum, or if the toekick is recessed lessthan 4 ", the toekick must be shortened(see following page).

After installation, carefully open thedishwasher door to check that thefront panel does not hit the toekick. If it does, remove the toekick and trimit accordingly.

Adjusting the toekick recess.

To adjust the depth (recess) of thetoekick, release the tension on thespring clips as shown, and push themounting brackets included in the in-stallation kit in as far as possible.

Trimming the toekick

The rear of the toekick has two cuttinglines.

Screw the toekick onto the installedbrackets, with the cutting lines to-wards the top, and pull out evenlyuntil it aligns with the toekick of theadjoining cabinets.

The toekick cannot be pushedback in. It must be unscrewed, sothat the tension on the springclips can be released. Thebrackets can then be pushed in,and the toekick re-attached.

Carefully open the dishwasher dooruntil it hits the toekick.

Using the front lower edge of thedoor panel as a guide, draw a lineacross the toekick.

Unscrew and remove the toekick.

If one of the cutting lines is close tothe line just drawn, score the front ofthe toekick, and snap off the excess, otherwise, trim the toekick along theline using a saw.

Screw the toekick back onto thebrackets, with the cut edge at thebottom.

If the dishwasher door does not opencompletely, the toekick may need fur-ther trimming.

Plumbing It is the responsibility and obligationof the customer to ensure that theelectrical and plumbing installationis carried out by a qualified installerin compliance with national andlocal codes and ordinances.

To help protect your home, all dish-washers that carry the following blueand white sticker are designed to shutoff the water and drain the wash cham-ber in the rare event of an internalwater valve failure.

In order for this function to be active, the door must be tightly shut, a tem-perature must be selected, and theprogram selector knob must be inthe “End” position.

Hot water supply specifications:

Recommended temperature: 120°F(49°C)

Maximum temperature: 140°F (60°C) Water pressure: 14.5 - 145 psi

(1 - 10 bar)

An air gap is built into the water inletsystem to prevent potable water frommixing with waste water.

Hot water connection.

New plumbing:

The water inlet hose comes equippedwith a 3/4" female hose thread connec-tor. This can be directly connected to ashut off valve with 3/4" male hosethread ends. It is preferable that the hose assemblybe installed vertically so the hoseexits from the bottom of the valve box. If this is not possible, it can be installedhorizontally as shown, provided the hoseexit remains beneath the main body ofthe box (see illustration). (The “lightningbolt” should be above the “arrow” whenthe installation is complete). The valvebox should also be installed so that it isat least 8" (24 cm) above the floor (orbase of the cabinet), and so the excesscoiled hose will remain lower than thebox at all points.A 2" x 4" (60 x 115 mm) cutout in eitherthe side or bottom of the cabinet adjoin-ing the dishwasher is necessary if thevalve box needs to be passed through.

Drain system specifications:

The machine comes equipped with:

– A 5 ft. long (1.5 m) flexible drainhose with an internal diameter of 7/8"(22 mm).

– A built-in swivel connector whichallows the drain hose to be routed inany direction.

– A built in non-return valve on the dis-charge side to prevent waste waterfrom flowing back into the dish-washer.

– A built-in odor trap on the dischargeside to prevent odors from enteringthe kitchen.

Maximum drain height: 3 ft (1 m)

Maximum drain hose length: 12 ft(3.5 m)

Do not shorten the drain hose.

Electrical wiring and componentsshould not come into contact withany plumbing fixtures or hoses.

IMPORTANT:The dishwasher should be con-nected directly to the drain line.

Drain connection:

D = 24" (60 cm) (nominal)

Connect the supplied drain hose to thedrain pipe of the kitchen sink either:

A - above the trap using the clamp pro-vided, or

B - to the dishwasher connector of thegarbage disposal.

When connecting the drain hose tothe garbage disposal, make sure toremove the knockout from the con-nection nipple. (See disposal manu-facturers instructions for this proce-dure.)

A sample of a correct water and draininstallation of a dishwasher is shown.

A hose that attaches to a sink spraycan burst if it is installed on thesame water line as the dishwasher. If your sink has one, it is recom-mended that the hose be discon-nected and the hole plugged.

Venting the drainage system

Only if the dishwasher drain hose isconnected to a floor drain or to adrain pipe that is below the level ofthe lower baskets wheels , the drainmust be vented; otherwise the water in-side of the dishwasher may siphon outduring the course of a wash program.

Vent the drain:

Open the dishwasher door.

Cut off the vent cap located at theright rear of the dishwasher, behindthe filters, as illustrated

Additional note.

Since all Miele dishwashers areequipped with an odor trap and non-re-turn valve, the drain hose can be con-nected directly to the drain pipe as illus-trated.

If plumbing codes require an externalair gap on the discharge side of thedishwasher, the following requirementsmust be met:

– No part of the drain hose should behigher than 39" (1 m).

– If installed horizontally, the drainhose can be up to 12 ft. (3.5 m) long.If the drain hose is angled upwardsin any way, it cannot be longer than5 ft. (1.5 m).

– The drain connection should bemade as close as possible to thedishwasher.

– The internal diameter (7/8" or 22 mm)of the drain hose should not be re-duced beyond 3/4" at any point.
