Environmental Monitoring

Unmanned weather stations play an essential role in the effort to analyze and predict the world’s ever-changing weather patterns. The unmanned stations collect and store large amounts of weather data and then upload the data at regular intervals to a back-end host for analysis and long-term storage. MOXA Ethernet I/O modules can be connected to UC-7420 via RS-485 to take care of data acquisition from the sensors at the weather station.

For this application, UC-7420 can be programmed to handle protocol conversion before transmitting the weather data back to the central weather station. In addition, UC-7420 can be used for preliminary data processing before the data is downloaded to the central computer. One of UC-7420’s serial ports can also be connected to a V.90 or GPRS modem for PPP connections, and a PCMCIA port is available for installing a wireless LAN card for 802.11b/g networks.

Typical retail/POS system applications include cash registers, barcode scanners, pole displays, keypads, credit card readers, and receipt printers. Depending on the environment, either commercial PCs or industrial PCs are used to connect to the above serial devices. However, due to the number of devices involved at each station, it is necessary to expand the number of COM ports for the PCs at each station.

Traffic planners are continually studying better ways of managing traffic flow and reducing congestion within existing infrastructures. Currently, video surveillance cameras are widely used as an effective tool to allow administrators to access real-time information for instant traffic control and management. Traditional traffic control systems use serial lines and modems for establishing communication lines between outdoor devices and the operation center. However, the modern Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) needs a higher bandwidth to transmit high-resolution video data over

a distance of hundreds of miles to a control center. Reliability and redundancy are also high priorities in modern traffic systems, since traffic accidents caused by natural or man-made problems can occur without warning. Due to Ethernet’s reliability features, high bandwidth, and the low cost of components, Ethernet is being used more and more as the preferred protocol to construct reliable and well-managed communications networks that ensure no data loss and continuous operation.
