Governing Council (GC) updates from Annita Wozniak, president 2015-16

Since the last Courier was published in September, the leadership team focused on finalizing the goals for the academic year and meeting contractual obligations like updating agreements for shared responsibilities and facility space use with Badger Ridge and reviewing the CKCS manage-ment plan. GC discussed MAP test results and academic goals related to student academic success. GCs goals are available for review on the CKCS website.

The hiring committee is doing their annual review of process and the executive committee will be reviewing the bylaws to see if we need any formal updates.

The curriculum committee is working with a pilot program for math and evaluating science textbook needs.

The marketing committee assisted in capturing a presentation about the history of the school on video and sharing with parents and leadership teams the plans for the next 20 years. Please see the marketing committee’s articles in this issue about the 20 year celebration and the endowment fund that will help sustain the school for future students.

Over the summer the CKCS future facilities committee met with a large group who brainstormed the needs of students for the next 20 years. The final conclusion led to a common theme we’ve discussed for many years: GROWTH including adding a 4K program!

With expansion of the CKCS program, the committee envisions continued hiring of well-trained teachers who are skilled in Direct Instruction and teaching the CK curriculum. The committee recognizes control over our instruction schedule will insure ideal program implementation across a K-8 program. With growth the committee feels positive about a return to world language instruction for all students and investment in the implementation of technology to enhance all subjects.

This 20 year vision can only come to fruition by working together with the district as it plans for land use and grade/space configurations. The district facilities committee, CKCS and all schools are l ooking forward to working together with the decision makers on the Verona Area School Board.

Meanwhile Governing Council will continue to keep CKCS parents updated and share as much information as is available about the district facilities planning processes as they are revealed. The district facilities planning committee is currently waiting for instruction from the school board about how decisions will be made and deadlines, etc.

This is a very exciting 20th year for CKCS--we are glad YOU are a part of it.

PRT Updates

Welcome to the Parent Round Table (PRT)! The PRT helps to build better relations with the school, parents and students.  We encourage parents and teachers to join us for our monthly meet-ings.  These are held in the CKCS library from 6 – 7 p.m. every second Monday of the month. Our upcoming meetings are: November 9th, December 14th, and January 11th. The more involvement we have from the parents the more our students and school all benefit together.   We hope you can join us!

As always, we do need volunteers for the many events we put on throughout the year. Please visit our website at http://ckcs.verona.k12.wi.us/for_parents/prt for information on all of our events throughout the year and to sign-up to volunteer. Thank you!

Past Events:

Back-to-School Night & Bake SaleWe had a fantastic turn out for our annual back-to-school night event. Thank you to all the volunteers who assisted that night. The bake sale was a huge success as well. The PRT really appreciated everyone who brought in baked goods to sell and to those who purchased them. We could not have done it without you!

Our friends at ThinkFirst joined us for Back-to-School Night. ThinkFirst is a National Injury Pre vention Program whose educational programs are aimed at helping people - especially those at high risk: children, teens and young adults - learn to reduce their risk for injury. They helped our K-5 kids test their street smarts, measured them for booster seats, and gave them some great information on nutrition. For the kids who brought their bike helmets, they had a certified helmet fitter make sure they had a proper fit. We hope to have them back next year!

Rockin’ Jump Trampoline Park Fundraiser NightWe had our first fundraiser of the year and it was a jumping good time. Thank you to all of those who came out to learn what the trampoline park was all about and to support CKCS while doing it. We hope to have another one soon!

Movie NightHome was a good choice for our first movie night. Thank you to all of those who volunteered to help out. Movie nights are always fun and the kids seem to really enjoy them.

Fall FundraiserOur fall fundraiser has come to a close. WE HAVE MET OUR GOAL THIS YEAR!! Thank you! We will have the final results posted in the next Courier. Please keep your pink slips, so you know what orders you placed. The funds raised this year will go towards school workbooks, student activities, cultural events, technology for classrooms, and teacher grants. Pick-up for the fundraiser is November 13th. Please see more information below.

Core Knowledge® Charter School Endowment – a foundation for a lifetime of success!

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Core Knowledge® Charter School, we look to launch an endowment fund for the school – creating long term financial stability. An endowment is a permanent fund intended to provide ongoing financial support to CKCS in its mission.

An endowment works by donating money to the fund principle to start. In this anniversary year our goal is to raise $15,000 to open the account. Funds are then strategically invested through Commonfund and Walden firms through Madison Community Foundation. Annually a percentage of investment return is distributed to the school for use within pre-determined parameters sur-rounding programing developing students’ strong learning skills and broad base knowledge.

The distributions from the endowment offer the school financial stability and flexibility to: • Assist in unforeseen expenses to the school• Assist in operating budget needs• Continuous investing in students innovative curriculum programing and materials upgrades • Support costs associated with continuous external educator and staff training

In addition, the Endowment provides financial security to continually support the school’s original mission and vision toward student success.

Mission Core Knowledge® Charter School is a public education option for parents, students and teachers in the Verona Area School District where students develop strong learning skills and a broad base of knowledge through proven educational material and programs in a safe and structured environment.

Vision Core Knowledge® Charter School is a valued asset, community partner and highly regarded choice that motivates, challenges and educates all students from a wide variety of incomes, cultures and abilities.

The Endowment will serve as a complimentary fund to Parent Round Tables (PRT) annual fundraising for assembly speakers, portion of annual workbook fees, cultural arts, classroom supplies and technology, and operating budgets. Together, PRT and the CKCS Endowment support the costs of today and tomorrow, creating an environment of student success with continuous maintenance and growth.

Talk to Two

In December and January families across the district learn about all the choices for enrollment. CKCS is one choice of many.

Please reach out to TWO families who have young children and encourage them to tour CKCS and visit with our teachers and staff to learn about what happens in this school. Maybe they have an incoming Kindergarten student or maybe a new middle school student. Maybe they have a child who is very young and they want to get a head start of learning about the academic choices in Verona. It’s never too early!

Please share Your child’s story about CKCS with TWO friends or neighbors.

CKCS has 250 families and word of mouth has always been the best way to promote the school and help parents navigate the complicated lottery process.

As a parent you know your child best and you are the best decision maker when it comes to finding a school that fits your child’s learning style and your family’s academic expectations.

In the next month or so you’ll receive email requests for volunteers for other outreach needs. The committee needs help stuffing envelopes, calling incoming K families to tell them about open houses, answering questions at open houses or district kindergarten meetings or simply help in delivering flyers and info packets to local preschools and 4K programs, etc. If this is something that fits your skill set we’d love to have your time!

2015 EMPTY STOCKING CLUB TOY DEPOT About Us: Through the generous donations from readers of the Wisconsin State Journal, the Empty Stocking Club has been providing toys to area children since 1918! More than 10,000 NEW toys are distributed to area children – serving more than 4,500 families! How our program works: We work with area teachers, counselors, social service agencies & the Department of Social Services to submit names of families that may not have the funds to provide toys during the holidays. eligible) 5. Birthdate of each child is extremely important – this is how our system tracks each child.

The Process:

Ø Once applications are received, volunteers input all the information into our database. PLEASE PRINT CLEARLY AND MAKE SURE THE FORM IS FILLED OUT COMPLETELY. If we can’t read the forms, they will not be processed.

Ø Deadline is very important – it takes at least a month to process all 4000+ applications! Ø By December 2, 2015, TOY VOUCHERS will be mailed to families. Ø The Voucher will tell them what day to pick up toys – either December 15 or December 16 at

the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Ø Vouchers must be brought to receive toys. Ø Families receive one NEW, quality toy per child Ø If a family can not attend on their assigned date, it is OK to come either day
