Our Mission Statement

Verona Area Core Knowledge®

Charter School is a public education

option for parents, students and

teachers in the Verona Area School

District where students develop

strong learning skills and a broad

base of knowledge through the use

of proven educational materials and

programs in a safe and structured

environment.

Director’s Corner“I don’t know what your desti ny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”-Albert Schweitzer

Dear Families,

Nati onal Volunteer Month in the United States is in April, and honors people who donate ti me to improve their schools and communiti es. These people give freely, excepti ng no monetary compensati on, the true nature of volunteerism. Worldwide, volunteering is on an up-swing. Over fi ft y percent of all people volunteer their ti me to some cause, which means over billions of people volunteering. However, the need for good volunteers is sti ll great. Volunteers in our schools help meet growing needs, whether it be for one-on-one teaching, language support, classroom support or school programs.

Our Parent Round Table (PRT), Governing Council (GC), and Parents Advocati ng for Student Success (PASS) are formal parent organizati ons that create the foundati on of our school. I cannot thank each of these groups enough for their ti reless hours of service to CKCS.

CKCS parents help our school run smoothly and effi ciently in so many ways and we could not be as eff ecti ve without this support. CKCS thanks everyone who has willingly given of their ti me to help us with all of our needs. You are truly appreciated.

Together we are bett er,

Brett Stousland

Bike on State Street - Sapphina Roller Mural

Talented 8th grader, Sapphina Roller, spent her spring break giving back to her school. In the fall of 2014, Sapphina and other students parti cipated in a service learning project at a local nursing home. Through this process, she was inspired to improve morale by incorporati ng art into the environment. Sapphina worked for 8 hours over spring break painti ng a scene of downtown in Madison. Thanks using your ti me and your arti sti c abiliti es so generously!

SchoolMessenger Training We are switching our family communicati ons system from SchoolReach to SchoolMessenger, meaning you will conti nue to receive emails, text messages and possible phone calls from our school offi ce and the district as usual, but it may look just slightly diff erent. The biggest diff erence is that you MUST “opt-in” to receive text messages from our school. If you haven’t received that text already, please pay att enti on to a text coming from our system giving you that opti on as it’s crucial to have you in our text database for emergency purposes.

For a quick summary of this new system, including a few ways to ensure you receive the communicati ons most effi ciently, please visit: htt p://www.verona.k12.wi.us/links/for_parents/informati on_about_schoolreach

CKCS International NightDinner – Student Art Exhibit – ConcertFriday, April 24th, 20155:30 – 8:00 p.m.

The K-5 Internati onal Night is right around the corner. On Friday, April 24th, we will celebrate with a Potluck celebrati on of food, music and art from around the world! The event will be held at school. Visit the art exhibit from 5:00-6:15pm. Dinner is from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. From 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm please join us in the Gym for a concert of internati onal songs performed by each grade.

We hope that everyone will be able to att end this very exciti ng and educati onal evening. Here are a few key notes about the Potluck and some food guidelines we need to observe.

1) Please bring food to share for dinner. Your dish should serve between 12-15 people. Each grade has been assigned to bring food from a parti cular country or conti nent. Please bring food from your child’s assigned country.

Kindergarten: United States of America Grade 1: Mexico Grade 2: IndiaGrade 3: Italy Grade 4: African Countries Grade 5: Japan

2) Need recipes for your assigned country? www.Allrecipes.com is an excellent online resource or check your local library for recipe books. Need hard-to-fi nd ingredients? Woodman’s in Madison stocks many internati onal ingredients.

3) Please label your food item, identi fying the country/conti nent. Please provide a serving utensil (e.g. serving spoon or tongs). Also put your name on any pans or utensils that you bring. We will not have bowls for soup, so please avoid soup.

4) Please bring your dish to school between 5:00-5:20 PM so that it can be set out in the buff et area.

5) Do not bring food containing peanuts or tree nuts due to life-threatening allergies.

6) Food should remain in the Small Gym and Commons area only.

7) Don’t forget to pick up your dish at the end of the night!

If you have questi ons, please speak to your child’s teacher.

Over 50 Volunteers are needed before, during and aft er this event! Please sign up on SignUp Genius to help with set-up, food running, cleanup, food monitoring or the many many other much needed tasks needed to make Internati onal Night a success.

Please help make this internati onal celebrati on a memorable evening! We hope to see you there.
