FINANCIAL AID IS FOR EVERYONE By Hayes Reed, College Ready Magazine

For the college-bound student - or the parent of one - it’s normal to experience a bit of “sticker shock” once you start crunching the numbers of education costs. According to the College Board, tuition and fees at four-year public colleges are up 35 percent from just five years ago - and that’s after adjusting for inflation. To put that in real numbers, tuition and fees average $5,836 a year at four-year colleges, and $22,218 at four-year private colleges. Once you add the cost of books, housing, transportation, meals and other expenses, the numbers can really look intimidating. But before you rush out for a second mortgage or liquidate a capital investment, it’s important to investigate and consider all of your financing options. Even if you haven’t done a lot of investment planning ahead of time, you probably have more choices than you think. But to find out what those options are, you’ll need to start with the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Federal Financial Aid: Who is it for? It’s a common misconception that federal education assistance is available only to families who are struggling to make ends meet. As a result, many families simply bypass the financial aid process because they mistakenly believe that they earn too much income or have too many assets to qualify for federal programs.

The truth is that the federal government continues to be an excellent resource for anyone in search of cost-effective solutions to cover education expenses. While it’s not common knowledge, nearly every student qualifies for some form of financial aid. Financial aid awards usually include a mix of “free aid” programs, such as scholarships, grants, or federal work study, and aid that must be repaid, such as federal loans.

Darlene Hendrickson is Director of Financial Aid at Gonzaga University, a private college in Washington state. She says it’s a frequent mistake for families to eliminate themselves from these very competitive sources of aid.

“Just because a family has funds available to cover education expenses, it doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t complete the FAFSA,” says Hendrickson. “Many colleges and universities use the FAFSA results to determine eligibility for their own institutional programs in the form of grants, scholarships, work awards, and loans. These programs are available in addition to the other federal and state programs that are the primary result of the FAFSA.”

Page 3: core-docs.s3.amazonaws.com  · Web viewFor the college-bound student - or the parent of one - it’s normal to experience a bit of “sticker shock” once you start crunching the

So you may be asking yourself what types of aid might be available to you. The simple answer is that you won’t know until you apply. That is where the FAFSA comes in. The first step in the financial aid process is filling out the FAFSA.

FAFSA TIME LINE:

Now - March 1: Submit the FAFSA, online or paper version (online preferred) You can still submit the FAFSA after March 1; however, this is the priority date so colleges can get your results and start putting together your financial aid package.

A few weeks after submitting the FAFSA: You’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). It will indicate your EFC, Estimated Family Income. Check your SAR for any errors and make changes if needed.

March - April: Colleges begin sending award letters. Evaluate each school’s offer and make the decision that is best for you. You can accept all, none, or some of a financial aid package. You accept or decline each item separately. Make sure you return the award letter by the deadline or the money could be awarded to another student. As a courtesy, decline all offers from the schools you won’t be attending so they are aware that you plan to go to a different college or university.

Four Reasons You Should Attend College

If you are considering college, you should know that college degrees offer some definite advantages. For example, college graduates can expect to:

● Earn almost twice as much as those with just a high school diploma, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

● Find it easier to retain or seek jobs than less educated workers. One estimate says that by the year 2028, there will be 19 million more jobs for educated workers than there are people to fill them.

● Establish valuable networking contacts through professional and social organizations.

● Gain specialized training in their field of choice.
