Core Competency Drill
FC044—Residential Construction—Framing
DESCRIPTION AND EXPECTED PERFORMANCE: Identify the different stag-
es of building construction, what type of lumber is used, and the process of
how framing members are constructed.
Length: 2 HOURS REFERENCE: Approved building codes for
the City of Bella Vista and review current
NFPA standards building construction.
Equipment, Props, Information or Other Resources Needed: Computer, internet access and access to current residential con-
struction sites within your district and in the City limits of Bella Vista.
Research residential, single-family, construction—framing:
Brannigan’s Building Construction is a great place to start. Search online for some of the modern-day methods of framing. Notice
some of the common practices as well as shortcuts.
In order to deconstruct/overhaul a residential structure during a fire, you must know how it is put together. Knowing the difference
between load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls can save your life. Remember to discuss any voids you may find when examining
residential framing. Note the types of wood, processed wood such as OSB, and the use of trusses in combination with “stick-built”
methods.
Discuss as a crew, scenarios for fighting fire in a residence in Bella Vista. Include the benchmarks associated with identifying what
type of lumber is used, and the process of how framing members are constructed. Next, get the crew together and visit a residen-
tial construction site where framing is underway in your district. Take photos of the construction features: Footings, tie-downs,
top and bottom plates, joists, rafters, trusses if present, wall framing, load and non-load-bearing walls.
