“[standard-based] hardware technologies will play a major and defining role in future server architectures. Budget-constrained

enterprises are looking for means to shave costs, not just incrementally, but

dramatically.”Gartner – Reducing Total Cost of Ownership

“Most companies will find that the biggest gains [from a standardization strategy] come from reduced complexity, lower

maintenance or support costs, or improved performance.”

Customer Challenge Solution The Intel Advantage

• The 64–bit Intel® Xeon™ processor based systems allow GM to integrate multiple processes on to one machine; providing GM a reduction in hardware costs as well as integration of software products onto a single platform.

• The 64-bit Intel® Xeon™ processor provides outstanding price/performance and broad software support

• General Motors (GM) business requires the use of people, process, and technology to reduce the time to market for exciting vehicles like the 2006 Chevy Corvette Z06

• GM uses UGS NX MCAD to create large, detailed data models that have reached the limits of the current 32-bit address space

• Upgrade workstation infrastructure with the latest 64-bit Intel® Xeon™ processor based systems.

• Take advantage of the cutting edge technologies on the platform such as improved power management and PCI Express* interconnects

"64-bit Intel Xeon processor-based platforms provide us with greatly increased computing power and new capabilities over existing Intel-based machines. Coupling the Intel platform to GM’s business process innovation, we’ve been able to accelerate the design phase of automobile development, increase the level of innovation and decrease overall cost for our customers.”

Relative performance for each benchmark is calculated by talking the actual benchmark result for the first platform tested and assigning it a value of 1.0 as a baseline. Relative performance for the remaining platforms tested was calculated by dividing the actual benchmark result for the baseline platform into each of the specific benchmark results of each of the other platforms and assigning them a relative performance number that correlates with the performance improvements reported.
