Evolution of the Internet2 GigaPoP
from connectivity provider to project participant
Kassabian & Palmer,
The MAGPI GigaPoP
What is Internet2 ?
High performance network intended for research into new generation protocols and applications
“Born” in 1996, 34 original participants
Design called for “gigaPoPs” to connect participating institutions to a core network
What is a GigaPoP ?
Originally envisioned as regional aggregation point for membersProvides the connection to the vBNS or Abilene network “core nodes”Expected that 20-25 gigaPoPs would connect the 150 or so member institutionsToday 50 gigaPoPs connect more than 200 institutions to the two high performance national networks.

providers Committing to participation in the NLANR
and vBNS Techs communities
The GigaPoP as Transport Provider
Operating a connecting point for research universities and labs Establishing a gigaPoP NOC to handle requests &
reports from outside the home institution Routing coordination with connecting participants Routing coordination with the vBNS and/or Abilene
NOC Enforcing AUPs in technology Implementing anti-spoofing measures
The GigaPoP as a resource for the campus research group
Consulting for grant proposals Providing bandwidth and topology information Helping to manage expectations
Assisting with end-to-end performance problem troubleshooting Deploying and maintaining measurement nodes
such as Surveyor and Coral (OCxMON) points. Consulting for researchers and campus staff to
identify impediments to high performance
GigaPoP evolution - applications and projects
GigaPoP as an Application Sharing Point:Information
Simplifying Communications Issues What regional initiatives are in progress? What opportunities exist for collaboration?
“Single Bioinformatics lab looking for a long term relationship with like-minded
computational analyst desiring to grow proteomics database. Enjoy good wine and quiet evenings reviewing protein functions.”
GigaPoP as an Application Sharing Point:Information
A national research clearinghouse already exists:
http://dast.nlanr.net/clearinghouse/
There appears to be a strong need to provide this same type of service on a local level
GigaPoP as an Application Sharing Point: Resources
Effective Utilization of Scarce Resources Remote Instrumentation Control Curriculum Faculty
Wanted: Cyclotron in Good Working Order, with High Performance Network Access Have Funding!
GigaPoP as an Application Sharing Point: Funding
Most Funding Agencies Prefer Collaborative Research Greater Distribution of Dollars Better Use of Sponsored Infrastructure “Two Heads are Better Than One!”
GigaPoP Sponsored Websites that Heighten Awareness of Funding Opportunities
GigaPoPs as Service Providers/Enablers
Helping to Make Things Happen Network Design and Consulting Shared Academic Resources
Video Libraries Satellite Links
Primary or Secondary Internet Access One Local Loop, multiple functions
National & International links through Internet2
GigaPoPs as the Bridge Between K-12 & Higher Ed
Project Example: Virtual Panel Discussion Coping With Stress and Education 4 Panelists, experts in their fields An audience of teachers, psychologists, and
administrators Interactive, H.323 Videoconferencing Digitally Captured, Streaming, DVD formats for
review and distribution
CCIU/MAGPI Virtual Panel Discussion
No Longer a “Once in a Lifetime Opportunity”
GigaPoPs as the Bridge Between K-12 & Higher Ed
Higher Education Wants: Student Awareness of Their Institution A Market for Academic Content Field Research for Education
K-12 Districts Want: Best Possible Education Improved State/National Test Scores Continuing Education for Teachers, Staff Technology Infusion
GigaPoPs as International Collaboration Facilitators
Example – The French Project
Multi-disciplinary Foreign Language International Business Business Culture Technology Precedents for Future Collaborations
MAGPI/Wharton Lauder Institute
GigaPoPs as Community Resources
Continuing Education, Lifelong LearningWorkforce Development In Partnership with PBS stations In the Workplace
Shared Infrastructure Schools Local, State Governments Libraries
Future GigaPoP Activities
Institutionalizing the GigaPoP Application Hosting Bandwidth Aggregators Middleware Coordination Testbed for Pilot Projects A non-profit Resource Center for
Research, Education, and the Community
