DESCRIPTION

Response To Elaine Elaine: Fair use allows teachers to use copyrighted materials for educational purposes. The fair use laws are a big help to teachers when trying to gather material from other sources, but its also a tricky law. The factors that decide what is fair use are a little vague. I think its better to ask permission if you aren't sure if something qualifies as fair use. That being said, copyrighting and fair use are a good tool for a teacher because it allows them the opportunity to use others works for educational purposes and allows the teacher to use and build on copyrighted works. Me: I agree Elaine. It is important to always ask for help if you aren't sure about something. Copyrighting and abusing fair use are serious matters. They are very relevant to us as teachers. As teachers we need to educate or students on things such as copyrighting especially since technology is constantly improving.

My Post Copyright is used as protection to an author's work. Things such as video games, books, Cd's, poetry, plays, painting, and anything that is created. Copyright does not protect ideas of the author's just the original copy of that work. If there is to be said that ideas are similar to other authors, they are still considered to be fair use. Another requirement for copyright is that an author must show creativity. It is not said as too how creative one's work must be. I personally did not know how long copyright was valid. Copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus 70 years after that. Work is not published unless the author makes it public. Copyright puts a restriction on us as teachers when it comes to making copies. Teachers can only make a certain amount of copies before it is considered to violate the protection rights. We as teachers have to be good role models in the classroom and teach our students about the copyright and its fair use.

Response to Jessi Price Jessi:After completing my research I learned that the work of others can be copyrighted. Many things can be copyrighted such as a book, a movie, or even a play. When someone's work has a copyright, it means that whoever has produced that work owns the rights to share it. As a teacher, it is important to understand how to work with copyrighted material. A "fair use" means that an individual has legally used copyrighted material. A fair use must follow two rules, it must only be only be copied for "a limited and 'transformative' purpose." This means that you must be examining the copyrighted material and either critiquing it or commenting on it. Often times, fair use must be performed in the creation of a parody. To criticize someone's work, you may have to reference it to effectively complete the parody. Judges understand this and allow fair use to be performed when writing a parody. Teachers should be continuously learning in their career and they may be required to work with copyrighted material. To legally copy copyrighted material, a teacher must understand fair use.

Me:Jessi your post makes perfect since. You brought up the point that copyright and fair use go hand in hand. The author has the right to publish his/her work. As a student, before this assignment I knew nothing of fair use and little about copyright. This discussion has made it easy for me to see why teachers have us print off some of our work. As future teachers we need to be aware of all these restrictions in order to be successful in our classrooms.
