Homeschooling. If you’re being honest, it sometimes makes you feel nervous and even inadequate.
You’ve tried to put all the pieces together, but the word organize makes your stomach churn and you’re guilty of wondering if “disaster” isn’t a better fit.
And planning? Sigh. While everyone else seems to have it together, most days you feel like you’re just trampling goldfish into the carpet and trying to get the Sharpie marker off the walls (instead of teaching that math lesson you took 2 hours to plan).
Whether you’ve been homeschooling for 15 years or 15 minutes, let me tell you the secret no one ever shares: Homeschooling isn’t always perfect. And this rule is true for all of us. Oh, I know it looks perfect on Facebook and all, but every family gets off course, faces challenges, and sometimes feels like they are messing the whole thing up.
The good news is, even when life throws curveballs and you feel inadequate for the journey, you can live #NotConsumed in your homeschool every single day.SAMPLE

Understanding WHY we do something is crucial for laying a solid foundation. Before we can teach our children anything, we should seek to understand why we would want to learn these things. The challenge, should you choose to accept, is to search the Bible for a reason or motivation for each major area of study.
To read the Word for yourself (Joshua 1:8)To teach and disciple others (Colossians 3:16)
To be ready to give an answer (1 Peter 3:15)To have the skills needed for sharing the gospel (Matthew 28:19-20)
To help us understand creation (Psalm 33:6)To see God’s perfect order (1 Corinthians 14:33)
To help us manage what God has given (1 Timothy 6:20)
To help us care for the earth (Genesis 2:15)To hear God speak through creation (Romans 1:18-20)
To discover God’s hidden treasures (Proverbs 2:2-5)To defend the Bible’s truth (2 Timothy 4:1-5)

WHAT WILL WE TEACH?
Now that you have all of the pieces in place, it’s time to make an overall plan of the subjects you want to teach. Take a few minutes and make a rough outline. Start by considering your state requirements for high school and work your way down. You should have more subjects the older your kids get, keeping it lightweight when your kids are little. Here is our list. I’m providing it for you as an example to get you started. Don’t let it sway you from making a list that fits YOUR family vision best.

ANNUAL PLAN
An annual plan starts by looking at the whole picture: your calendar. Write in the months and dates for your school year. Start with the month you plan to start school.
Next, use several colors for school days, holidays, field trips, co-op days, or anything else you’d like to note. Finally, pray and ask God to help you determine your plan for the school year.
Remember, this page is full of grace. There’s no penalty if it doesn’t go exactly like this, but if you don’t spend some time planning, you will find yourself short on days or disappointed when it doesn’t go the way you hoped. Filling out this calendar plan helps you to see realistically what your year will look like.

CURRICULUM PLANFor each child, make a list of curriculum choices. Next, determine how often he/she will need to work on each subject and for how long they will need to work. You can use this information to help you determine how many days of the school year it will take to finish a subject, how long you have to complete each unit, and/or how many days of the week you need to teach that subject. (For example: we often do science and history only 2-3 days per week in elementary and middle school.)

Ideas: tidy room, breakfast, morning chores, Bible reading/quiet time, memory work
Ideas: family Bible study, complete school subjects, turn in checklist to mom, co-op classes

OUR CURRENT SPACE
Before you make changes, take a good look around and assess your current homeschool space. This doesn’t have to be a specific room set aside only for homeschooling. Your homeschool space is wherever your learning takes place each day.
THINGS YOU LOVE
WHERE DO YOU STORE THINGS?
WHERE DO YOU LEARN?
WHAT IS FUN ABOUT YOUR SPACE?
THINGS THAT DON’T SEEM TO BE WORKING
ARE THERE COMFY PLACES TO READ?
IS THERE A PLACE TO WRITE?
IS THERE ANYTHING YOUR KIDS HAVE OUTGROWN?

DESIGN YOUR LEARNING SPACE
The learning space is the most critical part of your homeschool. Think through what is needed to fit your vision: Where do your kids sit to work on assignments? Do they need their own space? Do you all work as a group? Are tables needed? Computers needed?

DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE
Evaluate each one of your children and place them in a level of independence. Note reasons for this choice and any other pertinent info you’d like to remember. If you aren’t familiar with our levels of independent learning, we have a free video masterclass to help.

ORGANIZING THE RECORDS
The secret to organizing your records is planning. Begin the year with a notebook and dividers. PLAN to go through your papers every week. Decide in advance what kinds of papers will go into your folder. Toss the rest! Remember, this is a snapshot of growth. You don’t have to save every detail.

THIS MONTH’S GOALS (FOR MOM)
Every choice we make changes who we are becoming. In this space, brainstorm areas you’d like to work on for this month. Pray and ask God to reveal areas for growth. Record the things you are passionate about improving or the little things that seem to be making everything more difficult.
After you’ve brainstormed, categorize your goals into groups to help you focus. Pick NO MORE than one from each group to work on this month. Little by little, changes are made!

Fill in the name of the month above. Below, write in any words that come to mind about this month. This should include things to work on just as much as positive memories or thoughts.
You can do this as the month progresses, so you don’t forget an idea you want to rethink or record. Get the information out of your head and in a safe place so you can focus on other things.

A LOOK AT THIS MONTH
At the end of the month, make a date with yourself to stop and savor the blessings...even if they didn’t seem like it at the time. Remember to treasure the hard things and look for glimpses of God’s goodness even in their midst. Be sure to ask the kids to help you answer the last row!
