■Special Feature Program ”Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera”【TOKAIDO TOURING PROGRAM】“TOKAIDO” is the most important and major road/highway in Japanese history

⇔ Carrozzeria took very important role as pioneer of artistic design and technical development for automobile’s history.⇒ Historical Automobiles designed and built by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera will meet with the historical and the most major highway of Japan

What is the EDO FIVE ROUTES?

The Five Routes (Gokaido), sometimes translated as "Five Highways", were the five centrally administered Routes that connected the capital of Japan at EDO(now TOKYO) with the outer provinces during the Edo period (1603 – 1868). Tokugawa Ieyasu started the construction of these five routes to increase his control over the country in 1601, but it was Tokugawa Ietsuna, the 4th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate who declared them as major routes and named In 1716.

Tokugawa Ieyasu began work on the routes shortly after becoming Shogun in 1601. The official creation of the Five Routes began with the Shogunane taking government control of the Post Stations along the existing routes.Before this intervention, the post stations provided places for travelers to rest and ran a courier system. After the official takeover, the Shogunate required that these stations give preferential treatment to those on official business or be forced to cease activity.

The Shogunate also coordinated general improvements to the roads of the Five Routes. The roads were flattened and widened, with steeper sections paved with rough stone. Trees were planted alongside the road, and drainage ditches were dug in many places. Markers were put up to indicate distance at each “RI”, which was defined at the time as 2.44 mi. or 3.93 km, from the starting point at Nihonbashi (in Tokyo). The Tokaido was completed in 1624 as the first routes of five, then Nikko Kaido in1636, Oshu Kaido in 1646, Nakasendo in 1694, and finally Koshu kaido was completed in 1772.

The most important of the five routes has been always the TOKAIDO which linked EDO (TOKYO) and MIYAKO (KYOTO) since the EDO period until today. MIYAKO(KYOTO) had been the capital for the long Japanese history until the EDO period, and even though the capital moved to EDO from MIYAKO, only the politics was moved but all kinds of business and traditional cultures including arts, technologies, foods, and crafts were remained in MIYAKO as the center of Japan and the trends were always born in MIYAKO.And always, great materials come from MIYAKO to EDO. At the present, TOKAIDO succeeded to the NATIONAL ROUTE 1 and 15 but still this route exists as the most important route in Japan anyway to link the East Japan (TOKYO) and the West Japan (OSAKA & KYOTO). © H.I.D. / ARTISTIC-CARS.
