Data Collection Methods

It’s important to determine the correct method(s) of data collection.

– Census

– Survey

– Administrative records

– Legal mandates and issues

Determining Data Collection Method

The following factors need to be considered when determining the data collection method:

– Type of information

– Level of detail

– Unit of analysis

– Stage of development

– Population characteristics

Method of Enumeration

• Direct interview

– Face to face interview

– Telephone interview

• Self enumeration

• Indirect Interview

Unit of Enumeration

• Determined by unit of analysis

• Must be consistent across data collection methods

• May be mixed for different data items

– Ability of respondents to provide data

– Least costly means of collecting quality data

• De Facto – where located at point in time

• De Jure – usual (legal) residence

• Combined De Facto and De Jure– Usual resident present– Usual resident absent– Visitor

• Serial number of enumeration unit

• Name of unit

• Number of units at the location/address

• Collect only what’s needed

• Ensure data is usable at every level

• Designate authority level/responsibility for each type of problem

• Guide for reporting unusual problems
