Foreword

In 1975, when I was 13, I wrote to the IBA to ask for a copyof their latest publication grandly titled Transmitting stations:a Pocket Guide. The year before I had listened with excitementto the launch of our local commercial station, Liverpool'sRadio City, and wanted to find out what other stations Imight be able to pick up. In those days the Guide covered TVas well as radio, which could only manage to fill two pages –but then there were only 19 “ILR” stations. Nevertheless fromthen on I was hooked and carried my copy around with me,especially when we went on holiday. I would drive myparents mad as I fiddled with the radio every few miles to seewhat other distant stations I could pick up – a habit thatpersists and still annoys anyone I travel with.

Over the years the Guide grew, as did its BBC counterpart,first with new stations such as Radio Aire or the doomedCentre Radio in Leicester, then a doubling of choice with theend of AM/FM simulcasting and then a whole range ofsmaller stations. The Guide reflected the growth of a vibrantindustry spreading into every part of the UK.

Today we are in the middle of a further explosion of bothlistener choice and ways to listen, as community radio anddigital-only stations launch on a variety of new platforms: onDAB, on the internet and via TV, as well as traditional FM.Most of us can now choose from hundreds of UK stations aswell as thousands from overseas. The days when I could onlychoose between four BBC networks, one BBC local stationand one ILR station are a very distant memory. It’s great tohave the Guide back to help us through this wealth of choice.
