Earth Science and Weather!!!

Page 4: Copy the schedule in your planner

This Week’s ObjectivesWe will learn about the four “spheres,” or

systems in our earth.

We will learn how the spheres interact with each other.

We will learn how we can see these spheres in our everyday lives.

For these notes, whatever is written in red, you write too.

1) The earth is mostly rock.2) 75% of its surface is covered by a thin layer of water.3) The entire planet is surrounded by a thin layer of gas.4) The earth can support life.

Review ActivityI will read off a description of a sphereYour table has cards to show what sphere I’m

describingL = lithosphereH= hydrosphereA = atmosphereB = biosphere

I will give you 30 seconds to think about which sphere it belongs to

When I say “show me,” each group will hold up its answers. Don’t reveal your answers early.

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Nile

River and I flow through North Africa.

What Sphere Do I Belong To? I am the Nile

River and I flow through North Africa.

I belong to the hydrosphere!

Nile River is hydrosphere because it is water.

I belong to the biosphere!

Mojave Desert is biosphere because of people, plants, and animals (life).

Today’s PlanWatch a short video about the Earth’s four

spheres to review what we learned on Monday.

Read The Four Spheres and answer questions about the reading to learn more about the Earth.

Create a comic about the Earth’s 4 spheres to interact with the content.

Complete The 4 Spheres Homework before next class period to reinforce what you’ve learned today.

Biosphere ComicPick an organism (any kind of life-form)

Examples: Mosquito, your little brother/sister, a pigeon

Make a comic of how that organism interacts with our four spheres

See example (next slide)

Sphere ComicBe sure to include each sphere

(lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere)

Use all six comic boxes—that means you will have to use some of the spheres more than once

Use a combination of words and picturesBe sure to color your comic

Atmosphere

Page 40: Copy the schedule in your planner

Things you’ll need to know for your exit slip…Understand why the atmosphere is

important for life on EarthKnow what gases make up Earth’s

atmosphereUnderstand the relationship between

altitude and air densityUnderstand where air pressure is highest

and lowest and why

Page 41: Copy the schedule in your planner

Remember, if a word is written in red, write it in your lab book.

Atmosphere Notes!

Page 42: Copy the schedule in your planner

Atmosphere questionsWhat is the main gas in the

atmosphere? What type of gas do we need? What type of gas do we release? What type of gas do plants

release? What type of gas do plants need?

Page 43: Copy the schedule in your planner

What Makes the Atmosphere?

~78% Nitrogen gas

~21% Oxygen gas

Some aerosols

(suspended liquids and

solids)

Page 44: Copy the schedule in your planner
Page 45: Copy the schedule in your planner
Page 46: Copy the schedule in your planner

Why is the atmosphere important? It helps living things

SURVIVE!It gives oxygen

for breathing.It traps heat for

warmth.It protects Earth

from radiation and meteors.

It acts like earth’s bodyguard!

What’s the difference between mass and weight?

MassThis is the amount

of matter in something

Mass always stays the same

WeightThis is the measure

of the force of gravity acting on an object

Weight changes when gravity changes

Page 48: Copy the schedule in your planner

Air pressure:Air Pressure is the weight of the

atmosphere pressing down on the earth.Review: What extra “oomph” or

measurement does weight have?

Page 49: Copy the schedule in your planner

Altitude can changeAltitude: how

high you are from sea level

If you hike up a mountain, your altitude increases

Page 50: Copy the schedule in your planner

As you climb a mountain…Does the air pressure on

you INCREASE or DECREASE?

Thumbs UP = IncreaseThumbs DOWN = DecreaseBe prepared to share your

answer! As you climb a mountain,

air pressure decreases because there is less gravitational pull on air molecules.

Page 51: Copy the schedule in your planner

As you climb a mountain, air pressure decreases because there is less gravitational pull on air molecules.

Page 52: Copy the schedule in your planner

Air pressure can changeAs altitude increases, the air

pressure decreases. This is because there is less air above

you to push down on you.

Air Pressure and Weather

Page 56: Copy the schedule in your planner

Air Pressure and WeatherYou're well familiar with our "H" and "L" designations on

weather maps for areas of high and low pressure, but what do they mean in regards to what weather's coming? High pressure situations are generally associated with fair, sunny weather. As high pressure is an area of sinking air, and air tends to dry out as it sinks, leaving sunny skies.

Low pressure areas are generally cloudy/rainy areas -- where strong areas of low pressure bring our stormiest weather. That's because it's an area of rising air, and as air rises, it condenses into clouds and rain. Air moves from higher pressure to lower pressure, so if you have a high and a low nearby, it can be windy as air rushes between the two.

Density ReviewDensity is the mass of a material in a given

volume.Density = Mass/Volume

Remember sinking and floating? Objects that are more dense sink. Objects that are less dense float.

I’m less dense!I’m

more dense!

Page 59: Copy the schedule in your planner

Altitude and DensityAs you climb up a mountain…

Does the air get MORE DENSE or LESS DENSE?

Thumbs UP = More DenseThumbs DOWN = Less DenseBe able to explain your answer. As you go up, the air gets less dense

because objects with greater density sink and objects with less density rise to the top.

Page 60: Copy the schedule in your planner

Altitude and DensityAs altitude increases, air density

decreases.Remember, less air pressure = less

forces pushing air particles together.
