A Certif ied Peer Special ist (CPS) is a trained professional who shares theirl ived experience of mental health recovery, resi l ience, and healing to inspirehope and the courage to act. A CPS establishes mutual relationships andsupports people to strengthen their unique pathway in l i fe in sett ings thatinclude inpatient, emergency services, respite, community health andoutreach services, prevention and Recovery Learning Communit ies (RLCs).CPSs can signif icantly impact peoples’ bel iefs about the capacity for al lpeople to recover.
The purpose of the CPS program is
to build and enhance the peer
support workforce in Massachusetts.
We bring our lived experience to
class and we learn how to use our
story and build mutual relationships
to assist people receiving support,
as well as service providers. We are
the evidence that recovery is real.
The Massachusetts Certified Peer
Specialist Program is designed to
enhance the tools used by people
who already have experience in
peer support and the mental health
recovery movement.

from your interview confirmation

W H A T I S T H E P U R P O S E ? W H A T I S T A U G H T ? W H A T C O M E S N E X T ?
CERTIFIED PEERSPECIALISTWHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Have lived experience with mental health,
emotional health and/or trauma resulting in
significant life disruption and want to share
that as a CPS
Have been actively working on mental health
recovery/wellness for at least one year.
Be 18 years old or older and have a High School
Diploma or equivalent (GED, HiSET, etc.)
Live or work in Massachusetts
Have successfully participated in at least two
peer run trainings and/or workshops.
Have been out of inpatient and/or outpatient
hospitalization for over a year.
