Cocoa-flavoured cough medicine will be first product to marketVirtual Press Office (press release)July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --A consumer healthcare company, infirst HEALTHCARE, has today been established to launch and commercialise new, fast-to-market consumer medicines which bring a novel approach to a market where there has been little new innovation in decades. The new medicines utilize infirst's intellectual property to improve safe and well-established drugs and the first products will be launched in the indications of cough & cold and pain. These two indications represent the most prevalent health conditions and the two largest segments of the global OTC market.

infirst HEALTHCARE will be led by Manfred Scheske, who was previously President of GlaxoSmithKline's USD 3 billion European Consumer Healthcare business. The new company has already signed a licence agreement with a key strategic partner in the US, for which it has received a USD 5 million upfront payment, with further near term milestones and royalties to be earned from product sales. infirst HEALTHCARE is a spin-out of the UK drug discovery group, SEEK.

infirst HEALTHCARE's most advanced product in development is a cocoa-flavoured medicine for the treatment of cough & cold, which is expected to be launched in time for the winter flu season in Q4 2013 by infirst's partner in the US and thereafter by infirst itself in Europe. Next in line behind the cough medicine is an ibuprofen-based, healthy plant oil infused product for the treatment of inflammatory pain.

Cough affects over 800 million patients worldwide, with an estimated 12% of the general population (7.5 million in the UK), experiencing the symptoms on a regular basis. Market surveys of the cough & cold market conducted by infirst HEALTHCARE have indicated that there is huge demand for a natural, flavoursome product (cocoa) which can be combined with a medicinal product (cough liquid) to provide a more pleasant and comforting experience for the patient.

In addition to its cough & cold and pain products, infirst HEALTHCARE is developing a broad portfolio of improved and fast-to-market drugs (adding natural ingredients to safe and well-established drugs). These medicines have a rapid regulatory path to market as their indication, dose, regime and label remain unchanged.

The marketing strategy to be employed by infirst HEALTHCARE will be similar to that used by some of the largest consumer health brands such as Sensodyne® and Tylenol®. These brands were built on the endorsement of healthcare professionals and on effective symptom relief, leading to patient preference (PEPP - professionally endorsed, patient preferred.)

Commenting on today's announcement, Manfred Scheske, CEO of infirst HEALTHCARE, said:

"We have talked to many healthcare practitioners who have confirmed the need for new, improved options for the treatment of cough and pain that are safe and cost-effective. Feedback from consumer research has also overwhelmingly confirmed the need for new products that have natural ingredients, such as cocoa, that can be combined with existing safe medicines to deliver an enhanced outcome for the patient. infirst HEALTHCARE's products will bring novel solutions to the most prevalent conditions such as cough and pain and I am very excited that we are in a position to deliver these products to consumer healthcare markets around the world."

Commenting on today's announcement, Gregory Stoloff, CEO of SEEK group, infirst HEALTHCARE's parent company, said:

At the American Heart Institute’s conference in 2011 Harvard researchers looked at 21 studies involving 2,575 participants and found that cocoa consumption is associated with decreased blood pressure, improved blood vessel health, and improvement in cholesterol levels, among other benefits. Eric L. Ding, PhD, of Harvard Medical School believes the healths benefits come from polyphonic flavonoids in cocoa.

A meta analysis conducted by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) in 2011 reported the following. “Of the seven studies, five trials reported a significant inverse association between chocolate intake and cardiometabolic disorders. For example, individual studies showed reductions in the risk of coronary heart disease, the risk of cardiovascular disease mortality, and the risk of incident diabetes in men.”

A presentation at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2011 Congress showed that people who consumed the most chocolate had a 29% lower risk of stroke compared with people who consumed the lease amount of chocolate.

ProactiveLife was founded in 2011 to help people take control of their health. The approach incorporates community, lifestyle changes, and natural supplements to assist people with blood sugar regulation and provide cardiovascular support.

Diabetes Support contains 10 ingredients to lower blood sugar naturally including cocoa, cinnamon, omega-3, vitamin D and others while providing cardiovascular support. Along with lifestyle changes including diet and exercise Diabetes Support is a new proactive approach to better health.

Liberian Cocoa production gets US$16M Boost Agric Minister Chenoweth DisclosesLiberian Daily Observer By William Q. Harmon09 July 2012

Agriculture Minister Florence Chenoweth Agriculture Minister Florence Chenoweth

In an effort to improve the cocoa industry to meet international standards, the Government of Liberia (GOL), through the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), has secured a loan over US$16 million.

“The loan has been secured to strengthen the cocoa production sector by introducing new technologies, the provision of high quality machines that will increase production. The loan will also

provide means for farmers to be taught new methods of processing their products,” the Minister said.

Dr. Florence Chenoweth told Journalists during the regular press briefing at the ministry of information, Culture Affairs and tourism (MICAT), that the loan was secured by the government, through MOA, to be infused in the cocoa subsector to increase productivity and to also yield quality output.

Dr. Chenoweth said the quality of cocoa Liberia exports today is of substandard, which is affecting the country’s revenue generation and also contributing problem of balance of payment as it relates to imports and exports. “Liberia used to export high quality cocoa to the International market prior to our civil crisis, today what Liberia sends out is mixed and the quality is poor,” she said pointing out that because of this our cocoa is automatically fined US$300.00.

She said: “We want to turn this unfortunate situation around by introducing new technological methods of processing the cocoa product to our numerous farmers in order to increase production and improve the quality and standard of the Liberian cocoa,” she said.

It is also our vision to increase farmers production to enable them receive high market prices, the minister said, for their cocoa products to help increase our export revenue accrued into government’s coffers.

According to the MOA boss the loan will be concentrated mainly in Lofa County, which she said provides the ideal soil, temperature and other advantages for the production of high quality cocoa. “We are going to place emphasis mostly on cocoa farmers that are in Lofa County, because Lofa provides the ideal soil for cocoa farming and other advantages,” she said.

The MOA boss was reluctant to disclose the source of the loan, but told Journalists that the loan will help Increase Avenue for the employment of Liberians, especially young people.

She said, the loan will also be used to ensure food security for rural communities that are totally involved in the production of cocoa, which incapacitates them to do rice or cassava farming. “The loan will also help ensure food security, especially in the rural areas for all of those who will not be in food production”, Dr. Chenoweth said.

Minister Chenoweth, however, did not disclose the actual time the cocoa improvement process will start in Lofa.

PBC falls to 16-Month low on Ghana Cocoa Forecast: Accra MoverBusinessweekBy Moses Mozart Dzawu July 11, 2012Produce Buying Co. (PBC), the biggest buyer of cocoa beans from farmers in Ghana fell to the lowest in almost 16 months after the Ghana Cocoa Board said its mid-crop harvest may fall from a year earlier.

The stock, also known as PBC, fell 4.8 percent to close at 20 pesewas in Accra, the capital, the lowest since March 21, 2011.

Cocobod, as the regulator is known, yesterday forecast that the mid-crop, the smaller of two annual harvests, would plunge to 42,000 metric tons from 80,000 tons a year earlier, spokesman Noah Amenyah said by phone today from Accra. PBC’s revenue depends on the number of tons of cocoa it is able to buy from farmers in a season, Xorlali Torsu, a stock trader at Databank Financial Services Ltd. in Accra, said by phone.

The company had targeted buying 55 percent of the harvest that spans July to September, Deputy Managing Director George Boateng said on June 8.

The harvest may be revised upward on good rains, Kwabena Asante Poku, deputy chief executive officer at Cocobod, said by phone today.

"We are delighted Ambassador Kirk was able to personally see how our investment in Ghana is supporting the growth of the country's cocoa sector, as well as helping improve the livelihoods of thousands of Ghanaian cocoa farmers", said Wouter Evers, operations manager for Cargill's cocoa and chocolate business in Ghana. "We firmly believe by improving global market access and supporting more sustainable cocoa production, we can help farmers improve their livelihoods and strengthen the local economy so that cocoa farming can thrive in Ghana for many generations to come."

Cargill has been sourcing cocoa from Ghana for over 40 years and opened its U.S. $100 million cocoa processing facility in 2008, which annually processes 65,000 metric tonnes of Ghanaian cocoa beans into high quality products including cocoa butter and powders to meet the growing demand from customers around the world. The company directly employs around 200 permanent staff and indirectly supports many more jobs.

Its cocoa facility in Ghana is playing an important part in supporting the Cargill Sustainable Cocoa Program, which is working to improve the lives of cocoa farmers and their families, and to secure the long-term sustainability of cocoa production.

"Cargill believes that trade, when combined with increased investment in agricultural development to prepare farmers for the global economy, contributes to enhanced economic growth, decreased poverty, greater cross-cultural exchange and a more nourished world," continued Evers.

In February 2012, Cargill - in close cooperation with the Ghana Cocoa Board - announced a four year commitment to farmer training in Ghana. The farmer training program aims to reach 15,000 farmers and support cocoa farming communities in the Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana.

Cargill's training will be provided through a network of Farmer Field Schools, where farmers will receive extensive training to help them rejuvenate cocoa farms and apply best agricultural practices related to pest control, harvest and post-harvest practices. The initiative will also cover social issues like raising awareness of HIV and the importance of schooling for children. Crucially the program will help strengthen farmer organizations and encourage knowledge sharing amongst cocoa growers. All training will be in accordance with the UTZ Certified Code of Conduct.

The company is also supporting activities to support cocoa farming communities in Ghana. In 2010, Cargill announced a three-year U.S. $5 million commitment to support sustainable cocoa in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. This includes a partnership with CARE to help improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their families across 110 communities in the Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Central regions of Ghana byimproving access to education, providing basic services for at least 60,000 children and helping address the worst forms of child labour.

Cargill has been operating in Africa since 1981 and is active in a number of markets across the continent in areas including cocoa origination and processing; cotton origination and ginning; grain and oilseed trading and processing; sugar trading and distribution; specialty food ingredients processing; and energy trading and transportation.
