2016 will go down as a very significant year in the history of Coota Park Blue-E. We are experiencing the highest prices ever in the Beef Industry and we have had fantastic rain. We have had some very well respected herds decide to invest in our genetics. 2016 will also see us make a significant investment in the future of Coota Park Blue-E and feed conversion. We have imported the Growsafe feeders from Canada and built ourselves a new facility. This facility will enable us to record the intakes of our bulls, automatically after nearly 20 years of collecting the information manually. We can quite comfortably say, we are the Home of Feed Conversion as we have been testing for the longest time of any herd in the world.
Again our steers performed very well in the Beef Spectacular Steer trial with our 2 teams finishing 3rd and 4th out of 76 teams. This is a trial that tests the ability of your cattle to do most things right – rather than just a few.
We would like to bring to your attention Cye Travers from Romani Pastoral Co who has stated he would be interested in purchasing progeny from Blue-E bulls for their Windy Station Feedlot. See details inside.
This is undoubtedly the best line up of bulls we have presented to date. We have collected semen from a few bulls and retained the rights to collect some more semen from those bulls in the future. We have stuck to our guns and still offer grass fed bulls. Our dedication to the data continues and encourage all potential buyers to view the information provided and ask questions of sale day advisers or of Nick or myself.
The Coota Park Blue-E program concentrates on those factors that make our commercial clients more profitable, both on the input side as well as the output.
The team at Coota Park look forward to seeing you on sale day or for prior inspection, just give us a call.
Kind Regards
WELCOME to our 2016 Coota Park Blue-E Bull and E-Female Sale catalogue.

We recently purchased 130 of the Wright Family’s Blue-E steers and fed with a group of our typical black steers for 125 days for the Jack’s Creek
Angus program. The Blue-E steers dressed a 375kg carcase returning $2277/head, growing at 0.51kg/day (21%) faster than our black steers fed
in the pen with them, which equates to an extra 56kg (from the feeding period only) which is $330/head more than the Angus steers.
Given the genetic data on these steers they probably also ate around 680g/head/day less, around $27 less feed consumed = $357 in front.
We don’t get paid on marbling in this market but our standard compliance with black steers to 2+ marble score is 30-40%; the Blue-E steers
were over 70% 2+ marble score.Windy feedlot is always looking to purchase steers and heifers sired by
Blue-E bulls, please contact Cye Travers 0429 677813 for details.

Earlier this year Cye Travers from Romani Pastoral came to Coota Park to have a look at our program and our herd. After careful consideration they
selected and purchased 4 Blue-E females as donors for their program. These cows where some of the best females Coota Park Blue-E have bred.
Incredibly productive and high feed converting cows that are the full package for a modern breeding herd.
At the same time, we showed Cye our entire drop of Blue-E steers. (minus the award winning Beef Spec entries). He purchased the lot in 2 deliveries for
their company feedlot at Windy Station. The Coota Park Blue-E team went up to Windy Station Feedlot in late May to
inspect the steers just prior to slaughter.

Coota Park Blue-E H278
Sprys Shorthorns and Angus purchased H278 bull at our 2014 Sale. Gerald has been excited about how this bull has developed. He is one of the highest feed converting bulls to come out of the Coota Park program.
Semen is available from Gerald Spry on 0428651481.
Sprys also purchased 2 elite red females from us in January 2016. Coota Park Blue-E F20 is the daughter of our D222 cow who is the highest feed
converting cow in our program. Coota Park Blue-E would like to extend our thanks to Gerald and Lynden for their support and investment
in our program.
This year we purchased some more Shorthorns females from Lyndell Bennett’s herd at Ivanhoe. She is an incredibly passionate breeder in pretty
tough conditions. She pays careful consideration to her genetics and is disciplined in her breeding. We look forward to the progeny from these
females.

their judgement. The independent advisers will be available throughout the day to answer any questions about the figures, about our program and in selecting the bulls and E-females for your herd.
The SDA’s will be provided with all information available on the bulls and E-females. They will use the information along with their enormous experience to help you make the best decision for your business.
Please refer to the Notes Page at the back of the catalogue for space to record your comments and preferences for the sale.
• CATERING •Coota Park Blue-E will provide morning tea and lunch on the day of the sale. Cool drinks will be available throughout the
day. (Beer and wine after the sale). Toilets are available at the site.
• OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY •
The bulls have been selected strongly for temperament – sometimes bulls fight and their movements can be unpredictable. We suggest children and those less able to move away from the bulls when needed – please stay out of the pens. Some wires surrounding the bulls are electrified – please take care around these fences. We ask you not to touch any
of the young calves and to be aware of the maternal instincts of their mothers.
• SALE/REGISTRATION/AUCTIONS PLUS •An open cry auction sale will be run in conjunction with AuctionsPlus. If you can not attend sale day – prior inspections are
welcomed and you may operate online.
Delta Livestock and Callow Livestock will be present on sale day. Delta Livestock will conduct the actual sale, registrations and will settle the sale. Chris Callow will be conducting all AuctionsPlus assessments.
Please feel free to inspect the bulls and E-females prior to sale day.

• HOW DID WE PREPARE THE BULLS/COWS FOR THE SALE •
All calves are weighed at birth and recorded. All calves are recorded with Angus Australia Multi Breed Register. All calves are Early – Yard Weaned. (5mths) All bulls are Feed Conversion Tested. All bulls are scanned for Fat, EMA and Marbling. Weights are taken for 200 and 400 days of age. All bulls are grass fed for the 12mths leading up to the sale only supplemented with hay (after being tested.) All bulls are independently assessed for structure. All females are independently structurally assessed at 2y/o with calf at foot. Those that do not pass are removed from herd. All bulls are treated for internal and external parasites. All bulls are vaccinated for/with: 1. Vibriosis 2. 7 in 1 3. Pestivirus - Ear notch test for reactors to Pestivirus. All cows are vaccinated for/with: 1. 7 in 1 2. Pestivirus as young females coming into the herd. No foot trimming or general showy rubbish. All cows are joined for 9 weeks and all empties sold. All cows run in large rotational grazing mobs without special treatment. Strong emphasis is placed on selection for temperament. Emphasis on multi-trait selection – slow and easy selection wins the race. We select for those traits which affect our client’sprofitability.
• TIPS FOR YOU - LOOKING AFTER YOUR BULL/S AT HOME •
Your bulls are a big investment and their ability to join successfullywillinfluenceyourdollarreturnenormously. This is why fertility is rated No 1 in relation to herd profitability. Introduce your new bull to your property by giving him some company. It’s all new, he will need something familiar. A few cows or steers will be best. Do not put with other bulls on arrival. If you have to introduce your new bull/s into a group – putinneighbouringpaddocksforafewdaysfirst – ideally with power on the fence between. Settle in with hay and good water. Always contact us if you are worried about anything.
Blue-E bulls will be comfortable with vehicles, bikes and dogs but not horses as have not been exposed to them. Don’tfussoverhiminthefirstcoupledays. If you are going to multi-sire join – get the bulls that will be run together into a group in weeks leading up to joining. Try to join with bulls of similar ages – older bulls can dominate over younger bulls. Just be aware that this may affect the proportion of calves you will get from each bull. Alwayscheckbullsdailywhenfirstoutwithcows – stay and watch him serve properly just for your own peace of mind. Best time to observe is in mornings or evenings for most activity. Observation of bulls requires you to see he is walking freely and his penis is in working order. The earlier you detect a problem with a bull and remove him from work and replace with another bull – the less likely you will affect a successful joining. If the damaged bull is removed and allowed to recover, the more likely he will return to full strength. All Blue-E bulls have had a breeding soundness check done prior to our sale; we recommend you do this each year prior to joining. Fertility is No 1 and empty cows have already cost you a lot of money – get rid of them. You should be getting at least 60% of your cows in calfinthefirst3weeks(1stcycle).Thisisavitaltime to ensure everything is going smoothly and according to plan. Ifyoufeelthefirstcyclehasgonewell–thenumber of bulls needed for the second and 3 cycles can be reduced. If single sire joining you could box mobs after 1st cycle and remove a bull. Identifying which bull has sired which calf can be a bit more work, but ultimately can be very rewarding. Gives you a better understanding which bulls work in your herd under your conditions. If you would like some tips on how to achieve this please feel free to give us a call to discuss. Rememberthefirst3weeksofjoiningcouldbethe most important 3 weeks of the year. We have great faith in our Blue-E bulls and work hard to ensure your herd’s joining is as rewarding as possible. Always contact us if you are worried about anything.

Coota Park Blue-E K286 is an incredibly complete package. His dam D273 is one of the most reliable production units in the herd. She goes back on the maternal side to S58 who left the herd this year at the age of 19 yrs, after 18 calves. His sire H330 bred incredibly well for us, leaving many cattle with a great muscle pattern as well as a strong EMA EBV. His maternal brother was purchased by Paringa Livestock producing their top sale bull in 2014. It is about breeding for all the traits that influence profitability, this bull is doing them all. He had a full paddock joining last year as a yearling bull and held his condition brilliantly. This bull is Dick Whale’s top pick. (Birth +3.4), (600D +76), (EMA +4.8), (IMF +0.3),( NFI -0.87)
This bull has been collected for international semen sales. (Licenced Semen) We retain the right to recollect this bull at the purchaser’s convenience and at our expense. Coota Park retaining 50% semen marketing income with the Purchaser for semen collected after sale day.
Coota Park Blue-E K455 is 6 generation of selection in the Blue-E program. After 20 years of selecting for feed conversion, this is the type of bull we wanted to breed. Ignore the fact that he is Blue, this son of H155 (top price bull 2014 sale) is thick, deep and long. He is a bull with softness (Fats -0.2, +0.3) as well as meat (Yield+0.7). He has great marbling (IMF% +0.4) with a raw scan figure of 6.1 at 12 months of age. His maternal grand dam C144 has produced a number of our best converting bulls. His conversion figure (NFI -0.95) is the 3rd best in the sale, which means he is the 3rd best bull available for sale for this trait in Australia.
This bull has been collected for international semen sales. (Licenced Semen) We retain the right to recollect this bull at the owner’s convenience and at our expense. Coota Park retaining 50% semen marketing income with the Purchaser for semen collected after sale day.
Coota Park Blue-E K200 dam is B170, one of our most consistent cows. Her son H278 was purchased in 2014 by Sprys Shorthorns and has impressed all that have been lucky enough to view him. Many are choosing to incorporate him into their breeding programs. B170 has legendary Angus bulls: Emulation EXT, GT Max and 036. Incredible longevity in cows like Dunbeacon Q5 (10 yrs), Sprys Q47 (15yrs) and Coota Park Blue-E S343 (19 yrs)This is another great son of H330. K200 is a brother to Lot 11, combining some of Coota Parks best genetics. His greatest strengths are in his growth (600D +82), his carcase attributes (RBY% +0.7) and (IMF%+ 0.4) and his strong feed conversion (NFI -0.77).
Coota Park Blue-E K99 is another fantastic H330 son. He is deep, long and has width (RBY% +1.3, EMA +4.8) His dam A149 was a cow that showed longevity (10 yrs) and has bred incredibly well for Coota Park. He is a bull that maintained his condition very well during a full joining as a yearling, he also has great feed conversion (NFI -0.85). The full package.

Coota Park Blue-E K142 is a first generation son of the great Rito Revenue 5M2. Revenue is a bull that has contributed a combination of Muscle, Marbling, Fat and Maternal traits. This is the best converting son, showing huge volume and length. (600D +98, EMA +6.8). Very strong marbling figures (IMF% +1.1).
Coota Park Blue-E K88 is a bull we used in our heifer program. He offers low birth weight (BW +2.3), great carcase (EMA +4.4), (Fat 0 and -0.1), and (IMF% +0.4). His dam is a great New Day 454 daughter, an Angus bull that has put a lot of meat into the Blue-E program. He is a great converting bull (NFI -0.77) also making him a very balanced bull. An incredibly balanced bull driving profit from many different areas.
Coota Park Blue-E K284 is a thick profit driving bull. The muscle in this bull is outstanding, combined with length and depth he will creates a lot of meat to sell (600D +102). She is a wonderful female that also goes back to S58 who leaves the herd this year at 19 yrs of age. The longevity and positive fat come from his maternal grand dam that is a Millah Murrah Woody W100 daughter still breeding well at 10 yrs of age. This bull has had semen collected on farm. 2016 NSW Beef Spectacular Trial
Coota Park Blue-E has entered steers in this competition since its inception. The trial compares producer’s steers performance in the feedlot and on the hook. It combines the points of ever section to give overall
winners, Coota Park Blue-E has placed very well every year.
It takes courage for studs to enter their cattle in these competitions. Congratulations to all those who do, your putting your head on the chopping block.
Continually it is composite steers or crossbred steers that take out the top places, year after year, yet our industry still has a pricing system that give priority to other factors.

Trip to the USIn June this year I travelled to the US to attend the BIF conference and have a look at some breeding programs while I was there. There was a lot in the conference program about feed conversion so I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn and talk to people within the American beef industry. I was lucky enough to travel with Kate and Tom from Hicks Beef. We had a great time and travelled a lot of miles. We went to 4 different programs and saw some amazing country and some amazing opera-tions. Our visits included:
• Meat and Animal Research Centre at Clay Centre. The home of Crossbreeding.• Rippe Gelbvieh. 300 cow herd and 6000 head feed yard.• Gardiner Angus. (2nd biggest Seedstock producer in the US)• Leachman Cattle Co. (4th biggest Seedstock producer in the US)
There is a lot going on in America in relation to feed conversion with many studs testing. The awarenessofhowimportantthistraitistotheprofitabilityofbeefherdsandtothefutureofthe beef industry is at an all time high in the US.
The scale is enormous over there; Gardiner’s Angus sell 2300 bulls a year. 1 Abattoir in Dodge City kills 5000 cattle a day. Leachman Cattle company sell 1500 bulls a year but only own about 50 acres. Great to see these operations and speak to their owners.
It was encouraging to see breed societies working together in the US. A lot of composite or crossbred cattle in the feedlots and in the breeding herds
A lot of research has been conducted at MARC in relation to crossbreeding. They are now looking at feed conversion and its value in breeding programs along with a lot of other areas – it’s a big research centre. Leachman Cattle Co have led the world in composite breeding and have now incorpo-rated feed conversion into their program. Lee Leachman is very interested in our program and our genetics.
I think Tom Hicks and I both came away feeling like we are on the right track and need to stay focused and passionate about our programs. Thanks Tom and Kate for a great trip.
