Coordinators’ Corner  As AzGA embarks on its journey to create a Strategic Plan for its future, we need to remember several things that make our organization GREAT.

1. We have a strong group of leaders. These leaders have put in hundreds of hours on communicating with committee members, formulating strategies, enacting their strategies, and reporting of their progress. These leaders may or may not have learned how to be leaders during their years with AzGA BUT AzGA has certainly given them opportunities to apply their skills.

2. We have goals that are meaningful to us as educators. As we proceed through the Strategic Planning process, we only included those vision, mission, and goal statements that we could be passionate about. The only way to inspire AzGA TCs to volunteer their time and energy is to call on that loyalty to the organization and to geography education.

3. We are resourceful. In the economic times of the last 10 years, we have gone from a high level of grant and state income to the lowest levels of AzGA’s financial existence. And yet, we still are offering programs, website resources, and assistance to TCs. This is because we have partnered with organizations that have sustained our efforts at professional development. These partnerships broaden our outreach but can limit our focus to goals of other agencies.

4. We are hard workers. When you signed up for your basic institute, one of the statements was “This is a geography boot camp.” In every sense of the statement, TCs are asked to “work hard and play well with others.”

5. We reward those who have served the institution. Nothing can replace praise, words of encouragement, and tokens of thanks when volunteers have given time to AzGA. Everyone likes to be appreciated.

So to sustain the organization, please renew your commitment to AzGA by:

1. Selecting one of the committees described in the following Communiqué. • Emailing the committee chairperson know of your interest in belonging on this committee. • Participating in the committee meetings. (Everyone is busy — This is just not an acceptable

excuse.) • Carrying out the tasks created by the committee.

  2. Attending AzGA events: • GeoConference is September 28 — Scottsdale Community College (Your support is

essential to boost the finances of AzGA and to renew your connections with others. If you do nothing else to sustain the organization, you should attend this conference.)

• Strategic Planning meeting — June 22 at ASU (Your support is essential to move AzGA on its goals, mission, and vision statements. If you have not been part of the strategic Plan process, don’t feel shy is coming to this meeting. You will be welcomed and brought up-to-date in short fashion.)

3. Promoting geography education: • With your school and school district • With your friends and acquaintances • With policy makers • Family members and pets

AzGA is nothing more than its TCs and members. We need everyone’s ideas and help in carrying out our goals, mission, and vision statements.

    Traditional Summer Institutes  

NGS announced that they are essentially discontinuing support for “traditional summer geography institutes” and moving to supporting multi‐state efforts to train leaders in advocacy (what they call impact) for geographic literacy.  Traditional SGIs are defined as geography content heavy, one‐time events.   

AzGA Central has talked about how Arizona may participate in a multi‐state event as we already have a track record for playing well with other states.   We can do some of the process locally, and some in group work, so to speak.  We have talked about webinars and conference calls as possible ways for us to conquer some of the distance issues; having some of the process over a period of time such as one day a week for 4 weeks; local trips to visit our own (crazy) politicians or other policy makers – with a road trip at some point for those that stay the course.   

This issue will be addressed by the Leadership Task Force Committee. This is in the planning stage and we are open to suggestions about what the final training product will be.      In the meantime, through a partnership with Mesa Community College, AzGA is partnering with the TL3C Project to do a STEM Geography Institute this spring and summer.  The format for this event is a modified traditional institute – multi‐day, residential for those who live quite some distance from ASU campus, and focused on the science side of Geography.  We have 21 participants registered, including four TCs.  We will be planning at least one evening meal for the participants to which established TCs will be invited – probably July 1.  An invitation requesting an RSVP will be sent via the AzGA TCs list serve sometime in June.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Social Studies (STEMSS) Institute (STEMSS 2013) April 20, May 11, July 1-3, July 8-11, and August 17, 2013 TL3C Grant (Mesa Community College U.S. Dept of Ed grant)   To remind you – AzGA was written into this grant to provide materials and professional development for inservice and preservice teachers.  The funding AzGA will receive from this grant will, in addition to paying for the work that is done, provide us with some additional funding to provide professional development.  You can find more details in T C Communiqué 136 and 139.    The five exemplar lessons for the grant are nearly finished with at least two piloted and complete.   Twenty‐one teachers applied for the twenty slots available for the STEMSS Institute which started Saturday, April 20.     Gale Ekiss, Karen Guerrero, and Margarita Jimenez‐Silva all made presentations during the first day covering What is Geography, STEM, Next Generation Science Standards and ELL, SCIOP & TESOL among other topics.  Diane Godfrey and Dianne McKee are the Lead Teacher Consultants for this event.  Four TCs, Sheila Nice, Heather Moll, Danna Lagerquist and Tricia Hutchinson are participating in the 

Institute.     All Teacher Consultants are invited to attend an evening meal in July to meet the participants in this class.  Details will be sent via the T C list serve sometime in June...

 The meeting was called to order at 9:00 am by Gale Ekiss.   

   After a welcome, Gale led a Celebration of AzGA. Then the 10 and 20 year TCs who were attending were honored with thanks and certificates. 

      

 

Tiffany Zuniga, Dianne McKee and Lynn Galvin receive thanks and congratulations for ten years of service from Ron Dorn, Co‐coordinator. 

Malcolm Comeaux, Patricia Hutchinson, Gale Ekiss, Michael Ostapuk and Robert Mings are honored for 20 years of service to AzGA.

 AzGA Got Its Foot in the Door, But It Slammed Shut!   Yes, we got our AzGA foot in the 2012‐13 legislature's door to restore state funding support for AzGA.  As you will recall, state funding we received since 1994 was swept to balance the state budget during the Great Recession!   After initial contact with a legislator friend Rep. Lela Alston‐D by TC Mike Ostapuk, she introduced HB 2221 to restore to AzGA the $50K lost.  Four DEM House members (Alston, Mark Cardenas, Sally Ann Gonzales, and Juan Mendez) co‐sponsored the HB 2221. Unfortunately, HB 2221 died in the House Education Committee despite our best efforts, and letters of support from NGS and John Balentine, former ADE K‐12 Social Studies Specialist.   However, now that AzGA is back on the legislature's radar, we are not giving up! Your AzGA Advocacy Planning Team is working on a strategic plan to get a new funding bill sponsored and passed in 2013‐14.  Key will be finding joint GOP DEM support in both the House and the Senate going into the next legislative session.   You will be hearing more from your Advocacy Planning Team how you can help focus our efforts before this Fall.  Politics is often about "knowing who knows who" and determining what the best leverage points are.  Who do you know who could be a champion for our cause to keep geography relevant in our schools?   So put your thinking caps on, evaluate time you could give, and communication skills you can offer.  We will be counting on your support as we move forward with our efforts to restore AzGA funding. 

‐ Mike Ostapuk and Ken de Masi   Friends of AzGA were nominated by Ken de Masi and approved by the membership.    

Arizona State Representative Lela Alston was nominated because of her continuing support in the state legislature for funding geographic education. As the key sponsor of 2013 legislation to restore funding to the Arizona Geographic Alliance in support of its educational mission, Representative Alston persuaded fellow legislators to sign on as co‐sponsors of the bill. Although the bill was not considered by the House Education Committee, she has pledged her continuing support for legislation funding AzGA to be introduced in the 2014 session.  

 

Donna Campbell, of the Arizona Department of Education, was nominated for her outstanding work as a consultant with the Arizona Geographic Alliance effort on the NGS capacity building initiative. She enthusiastically took on this challenging role some two years ago, utilizing her unique organizational skills and ability to "chunk" short and long term goals for AzGA to submit to the National Geographic Society. Donna facilitated thoroughly engaging and professional training sessions with TCs at the annual business meetings for those years. Her expertise and personal skills when interacting with the AzGA Planning Team contributed greatly to putting us on solid footing to meet the challenges of AzGA’s future of leadership by broadening the organization in order to tap into the skills and talents of other TCs.

The Strategic Planning Committees then reported their progress, lessons learned and what plans and goals are for the next year.  The PowerPoint presentations for each team are available to see under the T C Tab on the AzGA website.

STEM / Technology – Tasks were to develop AzGA capacity in GeoSpatial technologies and STEM and communicate to public as well as to optimize use of social media. The AzGA Facebook account was used to 1. get the AzGA name into the public realm and 2. to drive people to the AzGA website to use the on‐line materials there.  Goal 1 was fairly successful.  Goal 2 was not. AzGA was hired to write 50 STEM lessons and train in‐ and pre‐service teachers and most previous plans were put on hold in order to ramp up to meet this opportunity.

Resource & Materials – Updated all lessons to new CCS for ELA & Math. Created plan to update for new CCS Social Studies when released.   36 new lessons integrating geography and civics with Common Core were added to the AzGA website along with over 50 new demonstrations on how to teach AzGA lessons.

Membership / Fund Raising – After considerable discussion, a membership fee was dismissed as a possible fund‐raising source. It was felt that it would reduce our audience, alienate our base and, in any case, we did not have enough personnel in place to plan and implement the services. The focus then turned to raising money through donations.  A Donate to AzGA button was installed on the website after appropriate ASU Foundation approvals were received.  A fund‐raising brochure was created.

Advocacy – Continued to advocate for TGIF at federal level in order to remind Congress that geography education needs to be funded when the next round of funding is enacted. Had a bill introduced to the state legislature to reinstate funding for AzGA – but it didn’t get out of committee.

The state of the Alliance was reported by Gale Ekiss and Ron Dorn.  

Anticipated funding for 2013‐2014 $27,000 for day to day operations from National Geographic Education Foundation (NGEF) 

  $70,000 to conduct an Institute and workshops from Mesa Community College TL3C    Project   Fee for services – workshops, inservices, etc. conducted for fees  

  Funding goals for 2013‐2014:  Reinstate $50,000 state funding. NGS has been asked to help us with this effort. Develop and implement a plan to encourage donations to AzGA using the Donate button on our website. 

 

From the T C Survey taken in winter of 2012: • 60 teachers (but some only put their name on and didn’t answer any questions). • About 2/3 are still teaching and they are teaching math, science, social studies, phys 

ed and all (elementary) grade levels K‐16. • About 2/3 are willing to give a workshop at school or for a district. • 2/3 didn’t know if their school facilities could be loaned to AzGA (or other educational 

organizations) without fees.  6 knew the facilities were free and 8 knew they were not free. 

• About 1/3 of the TCs who responded participated in Geography Awareness Week (GAW) 

• About ¼ of the TCs were willing to approach their district school board about the importance of geography education. 

• But almost 90% were willing to volunteer your time to assist AzGA with projects during the school year/school day to help with AzGA booths at events, with a workshop, to make folders, help with the Bee or organize GAW.

  Influence – Most of us do not FEEL we have personal contacts that will lead to restored funding or gaining influence.  However, as a group we know people in the Arizona Department of Education, State School Board members, artists, use of various sites for workshops around the state; have contacts in organizations like Salt River Project, Arizona Science Center, district programs, professional in geography, geology, graphics arts and other potential support services including newspapers.  As an organization we need to work to develop these contacts and resources to support AzGA and geographic education.  Finally – Most TCs are NOT using the AzGA website for promoting AzGA or even using the lessons   As a TC you should know the resources on the website that were specifically developed for use by TCs to make it easier to talk about AzGA as an organization and the importance of geographic education (which is a passion with TCs).  What is on the website (http://geoalliance.asu.edu/azga/):   Under the T C Tab:  lesson templates, past issues of the T C Communiqué, the Power Points from this event, resources to teach to the standards, forms to get reimbursed from AzGA, forms to apply for grants from AzGA and more.     Under the About Us tab:  Introduction to AzGA ppt (that is, a presentation template that you can use to present information about AzGA), a 9 page brochure telling about our achievements and the AzGA Vision, Mission and Values statement.   Also on the site:      over 280 lessons updated to CCSS     over 200 maps on a newly reorganized Maps Page     information about the Geographic Bee     links to resources      Join AzGA button (direct people here if they want to get on our e‐mail list)

      The Advocacy Committee conducted a training session with messages and practice to help demonstrate how to advocate for geographic literacy and AzGA.  More training sessions will be scheduled with possible sessions at GeoConference and ACSS Annual Conference as well as during the summer.  With the major goal of reinstating the state funding for AzGA, all the SP committees will be supporting and interacting with Advocacy to some extent.    We then broke into our new Strategic Planning groups and planned goals and strategies for the new year.

 A little before 4:30 p.m. the meeting was adjourned and the TCs and family members met at the 

Sedona Heritage Museum.  After a short lecture about the Museum’s history, participants were free to explore the house and packing shed.   

 At 7:00 pm, we moved to The Golden Goose and enjoyed a meal together, then closed the day 

with a few words from Malcolm Comeaux before returning to our homes or hotels.
