I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Generating Entrepreneurs and Sustainable Synergies, GENESIS is the project conducted by FUNADEH in partnership with USAID. The project’s general objective is to “Increase protective factors for at-risk youth and former gang members in the selected municipalities” of Honduras. 1. Consolidate the Outreach Centers (OC) network through multi-sectoral alliances to increase protective factors and promote a culture of peace, and

2. Increase income generation opportunities for at-risk youth and former gang members through capacity building and mentorship.

At this point of fiscal year 2017, GENESIS achieved an 80.35% of schedule efficiency and a 95% of cost efficiency. These metrics indicate that less work was completed than was planned owing to some pending activities and that the actual cost of the work accomplished exceeded the approved budget for those activities in $29,602.73. These deviations will be corrected in the following quarters of this fiscal year. The latest results of GENESIS in the January to March 2017 period are summarized as follows:

This quarter GENESIS received the technical Coordination of 17 OCs from AJH. Seven from Tegucigalpa, four from San Pedro Sula, three from La Ceiba and three from Tela, 61 OCs, are now under GENESIS’s coordination.

1,854 new beneficiaries between ages 9 and 29 years were registered this quarter at the 61 OCs.

This quarter 167 youth were trained for Income Generation component in San

Pedro Sula and Choloma municipalities; this training was oriented to strengthen soft skills for the youth and finally to discover their preferences, as they need them to be prepared to find a job or to start their own business.

Fifty-nine new small businesses were created this quarter: 49 created by ex-gang’

members or ex-offenders and 10 were created by at-risk youth.

143 new volunteers were counted this quarter, as part of the programed activities of 61 OCs.

27 ex-gang members or ex-offenders were trained and advised for the creation of

new business by the entrepreneur’s program executed by CCIT as a second grant results.

On January 17th, an agreement between FUNADEH-GENESIS and AMCHAM was

signed to promote its businessmen representatives to work with OC’s and generate opportunities for youth.

On January 20th, an exchanged of experiences was done with the partners and coordinators from La Ceiba. They reviewed topics such as Leverage, settlements and the innovations activities realized in Outreach Centers in San Pedro Sula and Choloma.

On January 26th, Calles Felices methodology was implemented in Tegucigalpa,

training 13 volunteers and 14 OC’s Coordinators participated.

On February 3rd, 27 Entrepreneurism’s Kits were to ex-gang’s members through the CCIT entrepreneurs program in Tegucigalpa.

During this quarter qualify to all the coordinators the component of the virtues to

be served in all OCs. 131 participants between coordinators and volunteers.

On February, a new pilot program named ¨Knockout Por la Paz” was launched with beneficiaries from the EEUU and Nueva Suyapa OCs in Tegucigalpa, this pilot was possible because of a strategic alliance in between USAID-GENESIS, Spirit of America, the Athena boxing Club and Embotelladora la Reyna benefiting more than 40 male and females’ youth.

On March 2nd and 3rd, an activity was carried out to reinforce the GENESIS TEAM,

training focus on Leadership, Team working, communication, and healthy relationships at work.

On March 7th, the new program Programa de Aprendizaje Asistido por Tecnología

(PAAT) was launched, there are 113 students enrolled during this period.

GENESIS supported the campaign ‘CAMPEON MI NACION’, implemented by AJH in Choloma, Tela, La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa. This football tournament was done to create awareness for not migration of at-risk youth in communities, counted with 68 participants.

On March 9th, 22 Entrepreneurs Kits were donated to ex-gang’s members or ex-

offenders that are part of the second opportunities program with the CCIT.

On March 15th, a meeting with the Vice-Minister of prevention was held to continue working in conjunction with GENESIS in OC´s activities.

During this quarter (32) new at-risk youth achieved four months of work and

support, through the Employability Plan.

The process of diagnostics of new OCs started on March 23rd. Eight new OCs were evaluated to know the current situation in the community and the activities to implement on site, this process will be finish on April 2017

On March 28th, an agreement was signed with Price Smart and Cuarta Iglesia Bautista de Honduras CONIBAH, for the opening of a new OC in the San Antonio community of Chamelecón.

II. RESUMEN EJECUTIVO El proyecto Generando Emprendedores y Sinergias sostenibles, GENESIS es el proyecto liderado por FUNADEH en calidad de socio implementador de USAID. El objetivo general del proyecto es: “Incrementar los factores protectores en los jóvenes en riesgo y en los ex miembros de pandillas de las municipalidades seleccionadas” de Honduras a través de dos objetivos:

1. Consolidar la red de Centros de Alcance (CDA) a través alianzas multisectoriales para incrementar factores protectivos y promover una cultura de paz.

2. Incrementar oportunidades de generación de ingresos para jóvenes en riesgo social y población terciaria mediante la instalación de capacidades y mentoría.

A este punto del año fiscal 2017, GENESIS ha alcanzado un 80.35% de eficiencia en su cronograma de ejecución y un 95% de eficiencia en costos. Estas métricas indican que menos trabajo se completó en base a lo planeado debido a actividades pendientes de ejecutarse y el costo actual del trabajo completado excedió el presupuesto aprobado en $29,603.73. Estas desviaciones se corregirán en próximos trimestres del año. Los últimos resultados del proyecto en el periodo de enero - marzo 2017, son los siguientes:

Este trimestre GENESIS recibió el traspaso de la coordinación de diecisiete CDAs Nuevos de AJH. Siete de Tegucigalpa, cuatro de San Pedro Sula, tres de la Ceiba y Tres de Tela. Sesenta y un Centros de Alcance están ahora bajo la coordinación de GENESIS.

1,854 nuevos beneficiarios entre las edades de 9 a 29 años fueron registrados en este trimestre en los 61 CDA.

Este trimestre, 167 jóvenes fueron entrenados en el componente de Generación de Ingresos, en los Departamentos de San Pedro Sula y Choloma, este entrenamiento fue enfocado a fortalecer sus habilidades bandas para la juventud y finalmente que descubran sus preferencias, como ellos las necesiten para estar preparados para encontrar un trabajo o empezar su propio negocio.

Cincuenta y nueve nuevos pequeños negocios fueron creados este trimestre: cuarenta y nueve por ex miembros de pandillas y diez creados por jóvenes en riesgo social.

Ciento cuarenta y tres nuevos voluntarios fueron registrados en este trimestre, como una de las actividades programadas en los 61 Centros de Alcance.

27 ex miembros de pandillas fueron entrenado este trimestre para comenzar con ideas para sus propios negocios a través del programa de emprendedores realizado por la CCIT, de una segunda subvención como una prevención terciaria.

El 17 de enero se firmó una carta de acuerdo entre FUNADEH GENESIS y AMCHAM, para promover a sus afiliados a trabajar con los CDA y generar oportunidades para los jóvenes.

El 20 de febrero, se realizó un intercambio de experiencias con los coordinadores y socios de los CDA en la Ceiba. Revisando puntos como leverage, liquidaciones y acciones innovadoras que se realizan en los CDA de San Pedro Sula y Choloma.

El 26 de enero, se hizo entrenamiento para la implementación de la metodología ¨Calles Felices¨ en Tegucigalpa, participando 31 voluntarios y 14 coordinadores.

El 3 de febrero se entregaron 27 kit de emprendimientos a los ex miembros de pandillas o ex-convictos por medio de las actividades programadas por la CCIT.

En este trimestre entreno a coordinadores y voluntarios el componente de las ¨Virtudes¨ asistiendo 131 participantes: 80 de San Pedro Sula y Choloma, 21 de la Ceiba y Tela y 30 participantes de Tegucigalpa.

Durante el mes de febrero se inició una prueba piloto llamada ¨Knockout por la Paz¨ en los centros de alcance de Estados Unidos y Nueva Suyapa ubicados en Tegucigalpa, con el soporte de USAID-GENESIS y la fundación Spirit of America, con asistencia de 40 jóvenes.

Durante el 2 y 3 de marzo se realizó una actividad para reforzar al equipo de trabajo de GENESIS, este entrenamiento estuvo enfocado en el liderazgo, trabajo en equipo, comunicación y relación de trabajo saludables.

El 7 de marzo el nuevo programa PAAT (Programa de Aprendizaje Asistido por Tecnología) fue lanzado y en este periodo hay 113 estudiantes matriculados.

GENESIS apoyo la campaña ¨Campeón Mi Nación¨ implementado por AJH en Choloma, Tela, La Ceiba, San Pedro Sula y Tegucigalpa, donde participaron 68 jóvenes, con el objetivo de concientizar a los jóvenes a la no migración.

El 9 de marzo se entregaron 22 kits de emprendimiento a ex miembros de pandillas, a través del programa de la CCIT.

El 15 de marzo, una reunión con la vice ministra de seguridad fue sostenida para afirmar su disposición con FUNADEH GENESIS de seguir trabajando en conjunto en las actividades de los Centros de Alcance.

Durante este trimestre 32 jóvenes en riesgo alcanzaron cuatro meses de estar laborando, seguimiento a través del plan de empleabilidad.

El proceso de diagnóstico de los nuevos centros de alcance se comenzó el 23 de marzo. Ocho nuevos centros fueron evaluados para saber la situación actual en la comunidad y las actividades a implementar en estos sitios. Este proceso se terminará en abril 2017.

El 28 de marzo se firmó un convenio con Price Smart y la Cuarta Iglesia Bautista de

Honduras CONIBAH, para la apertura del nuevo CDA en la comunidad de San Antonio en Chamelecón, para crear oportunidades para los jóvenes.

Outcome indicator: Protective factors for at-risk youth and former gang members increased

Ind I: Number of sustainable Outreach Centers The OC 10 de Septiembre, is considered as sustainable one. In this quarter the activities in this OC were improved, because of the 80% leverage is reported from volunteer’s activities, new beneficiaries and volunteers are reported quarterly.

The partner of this OC 10 de Septiembre is a religious organization with legitimacy in their community, with active participation in leading this OC, managing transparent resources and results, that keep inform donors and community. At the present time, this OC receive support from Price Smart, it was the key for the opening of this OC.

Actually, the small business the gym is working and it has a trainer and scheduling systematically. Five of the sixty-one OCs, under GENESIS assistance are considered sustainable: Cofradia, San Isidro, La Amistad, Miguel Angel Pavón, and 10 Septiembre. Income Generation team have been giving support to the small business with entrepreneur workshops.

Ind II: Number of small business and self-employment ventures created by at-risk youth and former gang members

This quarter fifty-nine small businesses were created, forty-nine by ex-gang members or ex - offenders through the program with the (CCIT), and 10 by at-risk youth from San Pedro Sula and Choloma. They received their entrepreneurism kits from Comisión de Acción Social Menonita to start their business after the process of training and selection done during January and February.

Ind III: Number of at-risk youth employed

During this quarter 31 at-risk youth, 20 females and 11 males, were employed, all of them from San Pedro Sula and Choloma. They started working at private companies such as, Grupo Intur and OCs.

Outreach Centers transferred to GENESIS

This quarter GENESIS received the technical coordination of seventeen OCs from AJH.

On January two OCs from La Ceiba were transferred: La Canada and La Suyapa. On February 28, seven OCs from Tegucigalpa: Villa Adela, Vista Hermosa, Jardines de Carrizal, Nueva Suyapa, Las Ayestas, Los Pinos and Flor No.1. Four OCs from San Pedro Sula: La Fortaleza, Villa Ernestina, La Pradera and Cerrito Lindo.

On March GENESIS received three OCs in Tela: 04 de Enero, 15 de Septiembre and La Grant. Also during the month of March, the Bonitillo OC was received in La Ceiba. At the time of this report, 61 OCs are now under GENESIS’s coordination.

OC Technical assistance In La Ceiba, there was an exchange of experiences, best practices and lessons learned were shared by Choloma and San Pedro Sula OCs coordinators and partner, they explained how they have implemented all the components and methodologies, so they could replicate or implement them in LA Ceiba. The following coordinators and partners from La Ceiba OCs where presented: Las Mercedes, Primero de Mayo, San Judas, La Melgar, Búfalo, Canada and Suyapa.

PAAT

During the month of February, a new distance certification program was introduced in to several OCs. This is the Aprendizaje Asistido por Tecnologia (PAAT) program in partnership with Centro de Enseñanza Fraternidad from Santa Cruz de Yojoa. This new program is computer based and is oriented to at-risk youth over 15 years old, that for any reason didn’t have opportunities or were able to continue studying on the formal high-school education sector. This new program will attend seventh, eighth and ninth grades. It has been implemented in 12 OCs. Seven in San Pedro Sula OCs: San Juan, Lempira, Padre Claret, Arenales, La Fortaleza, Morales and Los Angeles. Five in Choloma OCs: López Arellano, 11 de abril, Olivos Verdes, La Amistad. Currently there are 113 students enrolled from all OCs. Calles Felices On January 26th, a workshop on the methodology of “CALLES FELICES” was implemented for 14 volunteers and 13 OC’s coordinators, so that they replicate this activity in their

communities. Also, public institutions that work on violence prevention were invited to participate, such as COMVIDA in OC San Francisco in Tegucigalpa.

The Methodology of “CALLES FELICES” received from Cámara Junior of la Lima the medal of the Best Community Project during 2016, because the 23 de Septiembre OC’s coordinator promoted this methodology in all primary schools around.

Knockout por la Paz In February, a new pilot program named “Knockout por la Paz” started in the Tegucigalpa OCs: Estados Unidos and Nueva Suyapa, with representatives of USAID, and SouthCom. This program is targeted to forty young boys and girls during a three months’ period. Aguazul also gave support with water donation. USAID and SouthCom representatives, during the day of opening the pilot program ¨Knockout por la Paz¨ with the OCs beneficiaries.

During this quarter, GENESIS recognized the improvement of the partner in the Suyapa OC in Chamelecón, who has gained more leadership in his community, where the OC functions and has gained more acceptance and collaboration in all activities implemented by this OC. This partner is the Catholic parish of La Santisima Trinidad, and as a result, they have increased the amount of at-risk youth served, these youths spend their free time in a positive way.

143 new volunteers were involved in the programmed activities conducted in all OCs under GENESIS’s coordination. This is a good outcome because now there are more active people helping beneficiaries to develop their skills and attitudes to prevent violence.

Until December 2016, AJH reported 34,667 accrued new beneficiaries from 61 OCs. Of these, 18,592 are female and 15,875 males1. These figures have accounted for since the opening of the first OC in Honduras back in 2009.

GENESIS reports a total 6,342 new beneficiaries since October 2015 detailed as follows:

This quarter GENESIS reported 1,854 new beneficiaries from January to March. This is the quarter with greater number of beneficiaries since the project started, because of serving methodology of “Calles Felices” in 61 OCs.

No major campaign is reported this quarter, however, focus groups have been being conducted in the communities where OCs are based to collect feedback from coordinators, partners and beneficiaries to execute future campaigns based on their needs.

Ind 1.2.2: Number of beneficiaries exposed to campaigns oriented to promote a culture of peace

This quarter, focus groups are being planned to implement in San Pedro Sula, Choloma, La Ceiba and Tegucigalpa, to have feedback from the OCs coordinators and partners, with objective to create new campaigns.

Result 1.3: Strategic alliances established with local organizations, private sectors, and other stakeholders

Ind 1.3.1: Number of agreements with stakeholders interested in supporting the OC methodology.

Through USAID, GENESIS achieved an alliance with Price Philanthropies to renovate a former church in order to start operations of the first OC under GENESIS’s coordination in San Antonio, Chamelecón.

Price Philanthropies belongs to PriceSmart, a US private business that has already sponsored three OCs; the 10 de Septiembre and Las Palmas in San Pedro Sula and Las Ayestas OC in Tegucigalpa.

Because of the lunch event with private sector executed last year in San Pedro Sula, companies such as DIUNSA, and Corporación DINANT have meet with GENESIS to explore opportunities for collaboration.

Fundación INTUR

GENESIS is in negotiations with Fundacion INTUR to stablish an MOU, but so fat INTUR has already employed GENESIS´s beneficiaries selected and trained through the income generation and employability program of San Pedro Sula. These Positions have been secured after matching the capacity, competency and academic requirements asked by the available positions at INTUR GROUP.

AMCHAM During the month of January an agreement letter was settled between AMCHAM and FUNADEH, this agreement letter includes all members of AMCHAM, this agreement letter will have a period of twelve months. AMCHAM representatives have visited OCs to know the programmatic activities served in OCs and identify how they can support the project.

2. SO2: Increase income generation opportunities for at-risk youth and former gang members through capacity building and mentorship

Result 2.1: Income generation and employability opportunities increased for at-risk youth Follow-up CEUTEC activities An Entrepreneurship workshop in La Ceiba, was carried out to identify new beneficiaries for the income generation Program, CEUTEC provided logistic support. And 15 young people attended this workshop. In San Pedro Sula, the workshop was executed with the purpose to reinforce the knowledge about income generation Program. Nine beneficiaries were trained.

Life Skills Workshop

On March 23, the income generation team carried out a workshop about ¨how to structure a business model¨ with CANVAS method in the FUNADEH Chamelecón office. 26 young people were trained in Choloma, all these youths are in process to receive entrepreneurism kits during the next quarter.

Nuevos Horizontes Project-CITI foundation

GENESIS´s income generation staff and the Nuevos Horizontes project; (sponsored by CITI) provided life-skills training to 216 beneficiaries from the OCs San Martin, Los Pinos, Las Ayestas, Zapote Norte, Villa Adela, San Francisco, Nueva Suyapa, Nueva Capital, Jardines de Carrizal, Flor No.1, Estados Unidos, El Eden and 21 de Febrero from Tegucigalpa. The Las Pilas and López Arellano OCs from Choloma, and Cofradia from San Pedro Sula. They were approached on how to implement their skills and labor skills as they are being prepared to be Visual Production technicians and customer service.

CCIT Activities

In this quarter, 27 ex-gang’s members or ex-offenders were benefited from the new grant singed with CCIT. These are part of the second group trained to developed their business ideas.

Furthermore, follow-up and support has been provided by the CCIT and GENESIS to the 24 beneficiaries of the first group of the initial grant.

Fundación Unidos Por La Vida Activities

Concerning the grant agreement with the foundation Unidos por la Vida, 22 ex-gang’ members or ex-offenders started their training and entrepreneur development process as the first group, next quarter, a second group will be reported.

V. PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Remarkable activities

Strategic retirement

During March the 2nd and 3rd, GENESIS carried out a strategic retreat for all staff, as part of the professional development of all staff. These reinforce the commitment, leadership, team/work and communication between the GENESIS team. This team building event was performed in Tela.

Immigration Conversation

On January 25th, a migration round table was performed in FUNADEH Pedregal facilities to offer USAID’s Acting Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator an opportunity to interact with youth from San Pedro Sula and Choloma. The theme of this interaction was about migration to the US, push and pull factor, and other challenges faced by them in their communities.

Virtues and Values Components

On February 15 and 16, a workshop was done to reinforce coordinators and volunteers with the methodology of ¨Virtues and Values”. Also, this workshop was served to 80 beneficiaries from San Pedro Sula and Choloma OCs, 21 beneficiaries from La Ceiba OCs and 21 beneficiaries from Tegucigalpa OCs.

Los-Lehtinen CODEL Visit

On March, a Congressional Delegation led by Ros-Lehtinen, Ambassador Nealon, and USAID staff visited the Estados Unidos OC, located in Tegucigalpa. The purpose was to learn about violence prevention and community development activities that form part of the Place-Based Strategy promoted by the USG including a focus group with at-risk youths in the community to discuss violence and immigration topics. Eight youths assisted to this meeting.

Socialization GENESIS Project with the Media

On January 19th, GENESIS staff held a meeting with local media to socialize GENESIS project in La Ceiba and present the components and programmatic activities served by OCs located in La Ceiba and Tela. 25 representatives from local media attended this event.

Methodology Transfer

On February the 22 and 25, an entrepreneur and employability workshop was implemented for Tegucigalpa and La Ceiba OCs. With these activities income generation staff transferred the methodology to OCs beneficiaries.

On January 31st 2017, GENESIS staff members attended to the yearly meeting project results at Municipalidad of Choloma, this activity was coordinated by UNDP.

Chamba Joven Program

On February 17th income generation staff held a meeting with the representatives of Chamba Joven Program and Honduras Jóven program to identify job opportunities for OCs beneficiaries.

IDECOAS - FHIS

On March 21st, a new facility for Japon OC was opening in Choloma, IDECOAS-FHIS built this OC.

Mi Comunidad – World Bank Program

On February, the World Bank Institution started the construction of the new facilities for 11 de Abril OC in Choloma and La Melgar OC in La Ceiba, this construction is being supervised by Mi Comunidad Program. They have committed to finish them by July.

Sub-Security Ministry in Prevention

On March 15 and 17, GENESIS staff members carried out a meeting with the prevention sub-secretary to give support to GENESIS project as they work with the violence prevention program in the OCs communities.

Follow up CONATEL Activities

During March, GENESIS follow-up activities for the connectively service internet agreement for all OCs with CONATEL, and some OCs already have Internet connection: 7 OCs in Tegucigalpa, 4 OCs in La Ceiba, 9 OCs in San Pedro Sula and 1 in Choloma. It is planned for next quarter to sign an agreement.

746 OCs beneficiaries have been served with the internet connectively in activities such as school reinforcement, computer class, PAAT class, Microsoft academy certifications.

USAID Assistance

Monthly meetings were held between GENESIS and USAID AOR on January 23rd, February 28th and March 22nd 2017. Also joint visit to OCs have been conducted

On January 18, GENESIS staff attended the bimonthly meeting between Aliana Joven Honduras and USAID mission representatives, to discuss about the technical assistance coordination of the OCs and the strategic activities to keep them improving.

Campeón Mi Nación campaign

A campaign named Campeón Mi Nación, a soccer tournament during January and February organized by AJH, beneficiaries from La Ceiba, Tela and San Pedro Sula OCs were served. Morales III OC from San Pedro Sula won the tournament, in this activity participate women and men football teams. The campaign aimed to prevent illegal migration to the US.

VI. COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER USAID AND USG IMPLEMENTING PARTNERS

This quarter Lady Lee foundation in conjunction with AJH carried out a toys donation campaign for San Pedro Sula and Choloma OC beneficiaries. Lady Lee promotes with its clients to buying a toy and they would donate one. 1500 children were benefited with this campaign.

VII. CHALLENGES AND MITIGATION PLAN

2. Establishment of alliances

Many organizations are working with the different initiatives of the project, but no formal documents have been signed. Universities like UTH, CEUTEC, UCENM also continue to support GENESIS.

3. Opening of OC San Antonio

GENESIS is in the process of opening a new OC, and it has been identified the possibility to open one in the neighborhood San Antonio of Chamelecón. A sponsor has also been identified, in this case Price Philanthropies. The proposal has to be sent to USAID for its approval.

4. Creation of data base OCs

GENESIS will develop an online database that will allow the recollect of the information generated by the OCs related to the activities that the communities. The database offers information for analyzing and reporting.

5. Carry Out Campaigns

Focal Group have been applied to coordinators and partners, in the cities where the OCs are located to identify and create Campaigns for their needs. By the quarter of April to June will be reported.

6. Low number of beneficiaries in La Ceiba OCs

OCs from La Ceiba have been affected by multiple violence incidents affecting their performance. An action plan is already taking place to solve this situation, specifically in Bonitillo, La Melgar, San Jose and San Judas OCs.
