Local Government Conference Cooktown Art Stall

Recently, we loaned out our display stands to the Event Centre, where a

north QLD government conference was held, involving government reps

from Mackay to Cape York Regions.

We had a display for the Cooktown School of Art Society artists at the conference and sold a number of small items. Apparently, most attendees did not know we were there because our display was the only outdoor one. Regardless of the lack of sales, our Mayor and some locals thought our display was excellent and were pleased and proud of the quality of the work on show. Thanks also, to all those who helped man the displays at the Event Cen-tre for the conference: Betty Clarke (those Willy Washers sold really well!); Faye Pini; Lea Ambrum Stevens; Rosalie Andre; Heather Wilcox; yours truly - and even our newest member, Pam Bruce, lent a hand.

Art Workshops An April Week-end Acrylic Art Workshop by Graham W

Smith was a great success. Many produced salable art

works thanks to the expert tuition from Graham.

Those attending followed Grahams exercise on day

one, completing an old barn / shed painting and on day

two used a photo and painted a landscape of their

choosing.

The Maxine Thompson Pastel Portrait Week-end Work-

shop in July was just as successful and the participants

all completed at least one and some two pastel por-

traits!

New Gallery Computer &

Printer Thanks

to Gay!

About six weeks ago, I applied for a Cook Shire Council community grant to purchase a new com-puter system for the gal-lery. The new Community Officer, Joh Anthonis, was very helpful as he dropped the forms in per-sonally and saw that we had no printer and a mis-behaving monitor at the time. We have also been struggling with internet and even financial docu-ments because we are still on Windows XP and the rest of the civilized world is on Windows 8 or something! Well, the good news is WE GOT THE GRANT and, in fact, they ap-proved the higher amount we applied for. Dial a Nerd is on the job, and I met with DAN yesterday to discuss our needs. He believes he can set us up with a new system for a lot less than the amount of the grant, which was based on quotes from Harvey Norman and Cairns Computers. It's doubly pleasing to

come in under budget

and to be able to do that

with a local business.

Thanks, Dial A Nerd!

CCAA Mini Fun Festival We had no sooner gotten our display stands back from the Event Centre when some of those same stands were off to the Cooktown Creative Arts folks for their Mini Festival. Many of us worked diligently on getting togeth-er some entries for Arty Bras, Jazzy Jocks, and Crazy Hats to support the CCAA in its efforts to raise funds to pay the large rise in their annual premises rental. Betty Clarke, the organizer for the event, has assured us that they were pleased with the response. Also, School of Art was a proud sponsor for the event. It was a great op-

portunity for us to help out the CCAA for once, as they help us out every

year with sponsorship/donation for our Annual Exhibition. Betty Clarke put

us in the number one position for sponsors on her posters! Thanks, Betty.

Art Sales At Gallery Sales at the gallery have been steady, with a surprising number of tourists still coming in from time to time, even this close to the Wet. I have been working on some commissioned works in the gallery - and Lea and Rosie do a lot of their work here on a regular basis - and they are correct: it draws people in and they start asking questions, get interested in the gal-lery, and buy something or make a nice donation! With two (and sometimes three when Trisha Allen is here) doing mosaic works in the gallery, we have sold a steady stream of mosaics. Lea also attracts a number of people interested in smaller and unframed works - something for the rest of us to bear in mind occasionally! We still have some works from the Annual Exhibition. Eddie Argall took his originals and asked if he could leave some prints on canvas. We've had a good response to these prints and are only too happy to sell his work for the higher non-member commission! My thanks to all the artists who display their work in the Elizabeth Guzsely

Gallery: your diverse works make it a real pleasure to work here as a vol-

unteer, and the comments we get from visitors often makes me blush with

pride for all of us!

Tropical Christmas Mango Tree Dy Fursdon has finished crocheting her Mango Tree and it is on display at

the gallery.

Please drop in and say hi - we are also going to take photos of folks under

the Mango Tree for Christmas, so book in early if you are interested. You

really ought to come see it at least: it is a feat of magnificence!

Mosaic Classes in 2014 Rosalie Andre has also been successful in obtaining further funding for

mosaic classes. Any interested members are asked to call her or the gal-

lery for more information. She will undertake individual tuition as well as a

group tuition, with the larger one taking place early in 2014. Please

spread the word and help us promote this opportunity for locals to further

develop their range talents.
