The construction site for Wellington’s very own ‘lean-ing tower’ was blessed at a special ceremony last Wednes-day.

Last year, Air navigation service provider, Airways, announced it was building a new air traffi c control tower at Wellington Airport.

The tower will replace an existing 58-year-old tower situated in a residential area overlooking the airport.

Airways said the tower will be an iconic new landmark for Wellington, designed to lean into the prevailing north-erly wind at an angle of 12.5 degrees, combining strong and safe structure with excel-lent functionality and urban design.

Consent for the building was granted last year.

At last week’s ceremony, Airways New Zealand held an iwi-blessing.

Mayor of Wellington Celia Wade-Brown, State Owned Enterprises Minister Todd McClay and the chief execu-tive of Airways Ed Sim, were on hand at the ceremony to turn the first sod of dirt at the site.

“Our tower will not only meet current and future de-mands of the city, but will also be an iconic Wellington landmark we can all be proud of,” Ed said.

Construction is due to be complete in July 2017, before the tower is commissioned in October 2017.

Monera was one of more than 10,000 five-year-olds across the country who start-ed school this week.

Over the course of the year, another 52,000 children will also begin school for the very fi rst time.

Miramar Central School principal John Taylor-Smith said they had 10 children join the school’s new entrant class on Monday.

He said the first day of school was always a “big thing for kids”.

“Most kids go to preschool and they get weaned a bit about routines and being

together… then at school it’s about future focus principles.

“They have to figure out who they are and where they fi t in in the world.

“Really before they are fi ve it is all about me, my needs and my parents meet my needs, but of course when they get to school they have to learn they are part of the world.”

This week, Education Min-ister Hekia Parata also wished children and young people well as they prepared to pick up their school bags and head to school.

“I hope kids are feeling full of beans after the summer break and looking forward to the challenges of a new year.”

Just over three quarters of a million children returned to schools across the country this week, she said. Five-year-old Monera Farao and her mother Jeanette Farao.

Parents are being urged to ensure their kids are confi dent in the water from a young age.

Currently, staff from swim-ming pools across Wellington are hitting the pavement and encouraging parents to get their children involved in learn to swim classes.

‘Waterbabies’ classes are available at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie for children between the ages of six months to three years old.

The classes focus on the enjoy-ment of water and allow tots to develop awareness and skills. Parents are also asked to join in lessons with their children.

Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre programmes team leader, Selina Murray said 180 children were taking part in learn to swim programmes at Kilbirnie pools.

“We’ll have more when the term starts to ramp up. We have been doing a big push out in the community,” she said.

“A lot of people are not even necessarily aware that they can

Child safety advisor at Plunket, Sue Campbell, said it was good news that parents were taking the opportunity to visit pools with their young families and

engage in safe water play. “Getting into the water with

your baby is a learning experi-ence for both of you – your baby is learning about the water, and you’re learning how you can be safe together in the water,” she said.

Sue said water confidence lessons were a great way to consolidate learning about how to be safe in water for both children and their parents. For more information on water con dence classes, head to www.wellington.govt.nz

Oriental Bay came to a stand-still on Monday following a fi re at a popular local cafe.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the fi re at Beach Babylon cafe shortly after 9am.

The New Zealand Fire Service later reported that the fi re had started in the kitchen, spreading up the walls and ceilings of the building.

After several hours, fi re crews managed to extinguish the fi re

and dampen hot spots. At one stage there were at least

10 fi re trucks at the scene and staff members and customers were quickly evacuated from the eatery.

On the Beach Babylon Face-book page, staff described the fi re as a “wee incident”.

“We had a wee incident at Babylon today. Everyone is fi ne. Thanks to everyone for their messages of support. Not sure of damage yet. We will be closed

for the rest of the day obviously, and will keep everyone updated as to when we reopen.”

Staff said after an assessment they hoped to open their doors soon.

Locals are encouraged to take a closer look at the city they live in.

Seven ‘hidden gardens’ have been planted across the capital as part of Wellington City Council’s hidden gardens initiative.

Each of the seven gardens have been designed and planted by budding horticulturist apprentices working within the council.

Project coordinator, Ali Whitton, said the idea came following an internal competition set up within the Parks, Sport and Recreation Department at the council, which encouraged people to share their bright ideas.

This year as part of the Hidden

Gardens initiative, the seven selected apprentices had to come up with a concept, then design and plant their very own garden to “brighten dark corners of Wellington”, Ali said.

They were each given $500 to spend on their gardens from a train-ing and development fund.

“They have been in charge right from conception of an idea and they have each been given a mentor from within council.”

Apprentice Kate Sevicke-Jones has used succulents and cacti to create a “coral reef” themed garden.

“It is just a visual thing I wanted to do, something kind of fun. I have a creative background with an arts degree.”

She said the garden was assembled

last week and then transported to its secret location.

“There were aspects of it that were harder than I thought it would be, but towards the end it was enjoyable seeing it come together.

“It has been nice to revisit a crea-tive aspect within my current job,” she said.

From Monday, Wellingtonians were invited to decipher a series of riddles and uncover the locations of each of the hidden gardens.

“I feel really good about it and I hope other people can get some en-joyment out of it as well,” Kate said. For more information, head to www.wellington.govt.nz/recrea-tion/enjoy-the-outdoors/gardens/hidden-gardens

Thousands of people are expected to cycle, skate, scoot and explore Wellington’s coast next weekend.

On Valentine’s Day, roads will be closed to motorists from Shelly Bay to Scorching Bay, along the Miramar Peninsula. as part of the annual Ciclovia event.

Ciclovia is a worldwide move-ment, which sees roads and foot-paths closed down so people can experience the city they live in, in a different way.

Ciclovia organiser Ron Beernink said seeing all sorts of people hav-ing fun together, or on their own, was what made all the hard work worth it.

“People don’t realise what is involved in making something like Ciclovia a success. Luckily we have a committee of enthusiastic volunteers.”

Local woman Miranda Struthers said she took part in the event two years ago with her daughter, son and husband.

She said it was a great way for children to become more confi dent on their bikes.

“Last year was the fi rst time my son had done it by himself it is a great environment with no traffi c to contend with.

“They feel independent that they are partaking on their own, it’s really great for their confi dence.”

Miranda said because the roads

Will Struthers and his four-year-old daughter Cleo, at last year’s Ciclovia event.

remained closed throughout the day it was a “pleasant environment to cycle in”.

“It’s great just being able to enjoy the coastal ride, it’s pretty magical. We’re pretty lucky in a capital to have access to the outdoors like that.”

Ciclovia is sponsored by the Wellington City Council through its Communities on Bikes fund.

This covers costs like traffic

management, but a Givealittle fundraising campaign has also been set up to address a shortfall, Ron said.

He said while the event was free he hoped individuals and local businesses would make a donation.

Ciclovia will take place next Sunday, February 14. For more information head to www.ciclo-via.org.nz

Enjoy your summer boating safely

For more information you can look at www.gw.govt.nz/harbours or email [email protected] reports of unsafe behaviour or breaches of Navigation Bylaws call 04 388 7795.

Having the right equipment when you are boating is vital, the must haves include:

• Lifejackets for all on board• Waterproof communications• Well prepared boat and motor• A clear head to make good decisions (the beers should wait till you are ashore)

• An up to date weather forecast and an eye on the sky for changes

Knowing what to do with these things and how you can avoid problems or get yourself and others out of difficulties is just as important.

What to do:

Join a club – no mattering what type of water activity you like, there will be others who share your interest and will be happy to share knowledge

Ask the locals – if you are new to an area talk to the locals, they probably won’t give up their fishing spots

but are likely to tell you about the local conditions.

Educate yourself – Coastguard Boating Education (www.boatingeducation.org.nz) offers a wide range of courses to cover all sorts of water activities.

Maritime NZ (www.saferboating.org.nz) and Water Safety NZ (www.watersafety.org.nz) are both good sources of on line safety information.

The Local Harbourmaster will also be able offer advice. Here in Wellington that is the friendly team at the Greater Wellington Harbourmaster’s office, phone 830 4160 or email [email protected].

On Sunday February 14th between midday and 2 pm we will be testing lifejackets at Evans Bay Yacht & Motor Boat Club in Evans Bay, this is a free check of the condition of your lifejacket and you will go into to a spot prize draw sponsored by Hutchwilco and Barton Marine.

Have you seen Maritime NZ’s latest lifejacket adverts featuring ‘80’s TV cop Joe Bro? It carries the very important message that lifejackets will not save lives unless they are being worn. Most accidents occur suddenly with no warning – there may be no time to grab a lifejacket, and it’s extremely diffi cult to put on a lifejacket in the water. Many boaties drown less than 200 metres from shore.

While wearing lifejackets in small boats is very important it is not the only step you can take in keeping yourself safe this summer.

• Always check the weather forecast and keep an eye out for changes while you are on the water.• Carry at least one waterproof means of communication.• Make sure your boat and all its equipment are in good condition.• Understand the rules of the road and other bylaws like the 500 ton rule and 5 knot speed restrictions.• Avoid alcohol, it can impair your decision making as well as increase your risk of hypothermia.

Waitangi Waitangi

Weekend

Waitangi Day, which falls on February 6, commemorates the day the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. The Treaty of Wait-angi, which is considered New Zealand’s founding document, was signed in a marquee at Treaty House, in Waitangi in the Bay of Islands in 1840. The treaty, which was separated into three parts, made New Zealand a part of the British Empire, guaranteed Maori rights to their land and gave Maori the rights of British subjects.

CROSS THE ROAD WITH A CLEAR HEADHEAD

Leave your distractions at the kerbat the kerb

Think. Look. Cross.

Wellington Zoo is taking the next step to further reducing carbon emissions by installing 48 new solar panels.

On February 1, monocrystalline PV modules will be installed on the zoo’s front entrance building.

The installation of these solar panels will save the zoo the same amount of power used by one and a half average households per year.

Chief executive Karen Fifi eld said as a conservation organisation, the zoo worked hard to save animals in the wild and worked towards reducing the effects of climate change, which was a major threat to wildlife worldwide.

“Reducing our carbon emissions is important to minimising our impact on climate and protecting our environment from further harm.”

The initiative follows many other actions Wellington Zoo has taken to reduce its

carbon footprint, such as large scale composting and waste reduction and collecting over 300,000 litres of rain water each year.

“We’re proud to showcase our envi-ronmentally conscious practices to our community.

“We’ve been sharing our sustainability journey with visitors to show how choices each person makes at home and at work can help to reduce their own carbon footprint.”

The installation of the zoo’s solar panels was managed by the Sustainability Trust, she said.

Wellington Zoo became the world’s fi rst carboNZero certifi ed zoo in May 2013, after a fi ve year programme of emissions reductions.

Since fi rst achieving certifi cation, Wel-lington Zoo has reduced emissions by ten tonnes.

Local business Gentle PC aims to build, teach and fi x computers gently.

Owner of Gentle PC, Kaeli Bunt, said she was studying towards her diploma in network engineering fi ve years ago when she ended up in a wheelchair.

“At that point I decided to set up a computer repair shop at home, originally working from my bedroom.

“I’m no longer in a wheelchair or work-ing out of the bedroom, and the business is growing.”

Kaeli now has a small team working with her out of the company’s Miramar offi ce.

“Luke, my sidekick, is an independent contractor and a boy genius. He’s a tiny person with a brain the size of a planet.

“I also have Kate who comes and tidies my world once a week. She was a good friend who initially volunteered to tidy the work space and do fi ling for me, but I’m now pleased to say I can pay her.”

Kaeli said at Gentle PC the aim is to build, fi x and teach computers… gently.

“We don’t scare people with tech speak, we keep it simple so people can really enjoy their technology.”

She said the team was proud to have been in business for fi ve years and look-ing ahead, hoped to offer more computer classes to the community.

“The classes are about teaching basic computer skills, such as how to attach a photo to an email and how to use Skype.

“I don’t want people to leave with

pages and pages of information they can’t remember. I want them to leave with the ability to go home and use the basics on their computers.”

Kaeli also has a second business called Voltz Gaming with a focus on custom built computers. Find them at www.voltzgam-ing.co.nz. To contact Gentle PC call 0800 FIX A PC (0800 2 349 272) or head to www.gentlepc.co.nz

Dear Ed, When I go to the supermarket to buy a bag of rice I pay the price displayed. Even when I go a wholesaler, it clearly states that the 15 per cent GST is still to be paid. But if I want to go to a concert and see the price advertised, I am charged some undefi ned surcharge when I go to Ticketek or any other inevitable agent. Why can the organisers

advertise a price and then allow it to escalate? It is worse than scalpers, at least they tell me the cost up front. When I bought a ticket recently I asked the vendor If I had to pay to use the exit door – she seemed surprised at my question, yet I feel the extortion element the same (I had to use the door to get on with my life- why not charge for that as well?)

When a concert is advertised, surely the cost of advertising, use of the building, even the security and usher staff are known and refl ect in the charge. Surely the cost of selling the ticket is no different. I fi nd the subsequent extra cost increase offensive and tantamount to a ransom. If I walked with my ticket into the concert hall I could by the

same reasoning be expected to pay for my seat or access via the lobby or stairs. I have stopped attending many concerts because of this hidden, clipping the ticket, charge. It will affect my future attendances and should do the same to other concert and event goers

Paul Franken Strathmore Park

Prices and hikes Dear Ed, L. Alliston of Island Bay (Letter,

January 28) says “I don’t have any issues with driving more slowly and carefully” now that the road is narrower with the new cycleway. This thought hits the nail on the head. Future less carbon intensive city transport will be a more relaxed affair with car drivers toning down. It’s a simple move away from the established total car dominance of the public throughways.

This year, Waitangi Day celebrations are set to be bigger than ever.

The annual celebration, Te Ra O Waitangi, will once again be presented by Wel-lington City Council this Saturday at Waitangi Park.

Mayor of Wellington, Celia Wade-Brown, said she was looking forward to this year’s celebrations.

“Wellington’s Waitangi Day is always a positive experience. The treaty rec-ognises a unique partnership between Maori and Pakeha.

“Performances that feature traditional Maori culture and evolving art forms will provide a display of the many talents on show.”

Councillor Paul Eagle said Te Ra o Waitangi was al-ways a summer highlight. “It’s a chance for every Wel-lingtonian to have a Maori experience and celebrate the day in their own special way.

“It’s not just the kapa haka, dance and this year’s headliner acts I’m looking forward to, I’d check out the Maori kai – whitebait fritters and hangi.”

Children from Worser Bay School have delved into their backyards to make this year’s school fair something special - and very local.

Using produce the children have scav-enged from their backyards and with a little help from local suppliers, chef and school mum Hannah Thornton has put together an amazing array of goodies to stock the popu-lar deli at the fair on Sunday, November 8.

“We really wanted to use as much local produce as we could as it came into season.

“The children and their parents have brought in lots, as have friends and family and Kim [Chin] from Miramar Fruit Supply supplied the rest.”

Hannah has assorted a tasty range in-cluding preserves, chutneys, mustards, cordials, kimchi (a Korean pickle), relishes and even a pizza sauce.

For those wanting an early start there are also Christmas cakes and mince meat for Christmas pies.

Burgers, dumplings, pizzas from the

school’s own pizza ovens, Thai fi shcakes and many other food stalls will be keep-ing everyone fed on the day.

The theme for this year’s fair is “Our Secret Garden”.

Worser Bay School principal Jude Pente-cost says this ties in well with the learning the children have been doing this year.

“Relationships are at the heart of our school and strongly refl ected in our cur-riculum. This year's inquiry, 'What and Who is in Our Backyard' has been full of rich learning experiences and provides a great link to the fair.”

Money raised from the fair will go towards various school projects.

In the past these have included help with digital technology, additional staffing, teacher professional development and the engagement of a writing specialist. Worser Bay School Fair - 168 Seatoun Heights Rd, Sunday, November 8, from 11am to 2pm, rain or shine. Some Eftpos available.

Array of goodies at local fair

Chef Hannah Thornton has used local, seasonal produce provided by Worser Bay School chil-dren, friends and family to put together a tasty array of treats that will be on sale at the school fair on Sunday, November 8.

Next weekend the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club will open its doors to the public as part of Volvo Sailing and Boating week.

Events offi cer for the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club, Jennifer Loader, said the club was excited to show off what it had on offer next weekend.

“People think of a yacht and mo-tor boat club as elite sailing, but it is a very diverse club, with a large diverse group of affi liates.

“We are trying to encourage people to join our club, or at least be part of it, so they can enjoy then environs of Evans Bay.”

Jennifer said the club had a range of sailing activities available and as well as this, community groups provided a number of water sports activities.

Activities included races, learn to sail for adults and juniors, waka ama, currach club, Sailability Wellington for people with disabilities, fish-ing, sea scouts and surf ski winter training.

Jennifer said the club would be kicking off Volvo Sailing and Boat-ing week with an open day on Sunday, February 14, which would give people an opportunity to give sailing a go.

There would also be visual displays and talks from Maritime Police, the Wellington Coast Guard and Greater Wellington Regional Council.

The club will also offer events on Thursday February 18 and Sunday February 21.

At last weekend’s Capital Classic swim held in Welling-ton, 1,250 eager swimmers took the plunge but for one young swimmer it was all about giving it a go.

At seven-years-old, Joseph Barry from Hataitai was the youngest local swimmer at the Capital Classic, which was the third of seven events in the nationwide New Zealand Ocean Swim Series.

Joseph took on the 200m OceanKids event and was cheered on by his entire fam-ily, including his mum, dad and two younger brothers.

While Joseph wasn’t the age group winner in his division, that didn’t stop him enjoying himself.

His mother, Lisa Adamson said Joseph loved the swim.

She said as he crossed the line, he said he could not wait to do it again next year.

“The Capital Classic was well organised and I felt that the children were very safe while in the water and loved being part of it.”

While this was Joseph’s debut into competitive swim-ming, he is no stranger to ex-ercise as he swims frequently under the guidance of his local swimming coach.

He also participates in rug-by, gymnastics, and ballet and is a member of his local Surf Life Saving club.

Scott Rice, New Zealand Ocean Swim Series, event

director said it was fantastic to see young swimmers like Jo-seph jump into the series and into swimming in general.

“I hope to see him at the event next year and wish him all the best for his swimming in the future.”

Other distances in the Capi-tal Classic included the 300m ‘Give it a Go’, 1000m ‘Step it up’ event and the 3.3km ‘I’m Going Long’ distance.

The New Zealand Ocean Swim Series runs from No-vember 2015 to April 2016.

For more information or to register for the 200m Ocean-Kids event or other distances in this popular series, visit www.oceanswim.co.nz

DANCE IS FUN!

Ballet Jazz Preschool Dance Contemporary Lyrical Singing Dance Acrobatics!

We live in a world of busyness and work and the value of the arts is even more important to our wellbeing and to young people growing up. Learning, doing, col-laborating, being in performances as part of a cast, developing confidence, self- responsibility and discovering that perseverance and commitment bring huge sat-isfaction and positive results are essential skills in the big picture of life’s experience. All this and it is fun!

A Wellington treasure, the stu-dios at 125 Cuba Street continue a wonderful tradition of growing up with the arts - dancing. 2015 was an exceptional year with Chinese New Year, Pavlova’ s Twisty Thursday , CubaDupa , Wellington’s150th birthday , Tempo Festival in Auckland, Artsplash, The Attic Opening and two new ballets, The Very VERY Hungry Caterpillar and Degas Deconstructed at the Opera House to fi nish the year. RAD and

IDTA results were very successful for the many students who took examinations and a wide range of community and adult classes continue late into every evening.

The Tarrant Dance Studios celebrated the Cuba St building being 100 years old and Footnote New Zealand Dance was 30! 2016 starts with six dancers from The Little Egrets Company who are coming from Xiamen to make a collaborative work with us for the Chinese New Year in February.

Directed by Deirdre Tarrant the new work is called Monkey Busi-ness for the Year of the Monkey and will be in an East Meets West spectacular at TSB Arena on Feb 13 as well as at the Stadium at the Phoenix Game on February 7th.

CubaDupa happens once again in March and this year the dancers are creating a series of ‘happen-ings’ called Cuba Spaces. Summer has been fabulous in Wellington and the studios are in the comple-tion phase of major earthquake

strengthening so classes are start-ing a little later this year. February 20 is the day!

It is very exciting and we are very keen to get back up those stairs and into the studios dancing again! From the littlest dancing strawberry in The Very VERY Hungry Caterpillar to outstanding senior students going onto tertiary study and careers the Tarrant Dance Studios is a great place to be a dancer! Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another.

Dance teacher Fiona Haines says ballet has changed a lot over the past 20 years of her teaching, and certainly since she was a girl studying it herself. The Royal Academy of Dance has a beautiful new syllabus now that uses props and imagination along with the most inspiring orchestral music. It is a real pleasure to teach and watch the love of dance grow in students. Her academy is run from both Brooklyn and Karori suburbs. Along with

Jazz, Contemporary and RAD Ballet, she runs Fairy Ballet classes for pre-schoolers which involves stories and mimes for each class. The children love the acting side of ballet, and not just the younger ones, the older students can’t wait to fi nd out what parts they will be playing each year in our productions.
