Port Giles Mission to Seafarers

On Sunday September the 9th over 60 people gathered at the Flying Angel Centre for the blessing and opening of an alfresco, outdoor kitchen and Memorial garden. It was a happy occasion followed by afternoon tea. The Reverend Canon Garry Dodd, National Director of the MtS Australia and PNG had travelled from Newcastle, NSW to officiate. Before blessing the area, and the crowd present, with seawater collected from the nearby beach, he gave an inspiring talk on our reliance of seafarers and the sacrifices they make. Garry then declared the alfresco open by removing an MtS flag from a board of plaques.

Among those attending was a representative from the Hobart MtS Committee, Cornelis [Kees] Wegman, Member for Narrunga, Fraser Ellis, Mayor Ray Agnew and Progress Association President, John Anderson. The whole project had been made possible with grants and donations, and the physical efforts of the Harrison family. Geoff, immediate past Chaplain and a retired architect and builder, had the vision for the whole project and was the overseer. The result is a wonderful place for visiting seafarers to relax and enjoy the hospitality of the volunteers and community. A Memorial Garden alongside the alfresco has been established with fragrant native plants with a grant and support from the local Edithburgh Progress Association. The garden is to recognise all seafarers lost at sea. There have been many shipwrecks off the coast nearby, and the largest mass grave in Australia of seafarers lost at sea is in the Edithburgh Cemetery. Along with the Flying Angel Centre hall and facilities, the whole project has made the Mission to Sea-farers in Edithburgh a wonderful place for seafarers arriving in nearby Port Giles. The Mission is a home from home providing seafarers with all their needs. More than that it has volunteers who show seafarers true care and hospitality. If anyone would like to be involved with helping the seafarers, either driving our small bus [no special licence needed] to do shopping in Yorketown or to go sight seeing, or to help at the centre, please contact us. I can guarantee you will have a wonderful experience meeting people from all over the world. June Harrison Chaplain / Secretary [mobile 0416 195 286]

Birds of the Heel

Jeffrey Robinson

Australian Shelduck During summer and the autumn Australian shelduck (also known as Mountain Duck) congregate in large flocks in the fields near Coobowie. There can be 80 to 100 birds in the flocks and they seem to prefer fields that have recently had peas or similar crops. In spring the Australian shelduck have scattered and pairs may be found on the small salt lakes where they may have a dozen or more ducklings. Australian shelduck are said to prefer nesting in hollows, but on the Heel finding tree hollows close to the salt lakes may be difficult, the nests may have to be some distance from the lake of their choice. However in the absence of tree hollows, they will nest on the ground.

Size 60-70cm and may weigh 2kg

Male Australian shelduck

Female Australian shelduck

New Owners at Edithburgh Motors

A warm welcome to Pete and Carmen who have recently taken over the local garage.

Peter has been associated with Edithburgh since 1974 when his Mum and Dad owned the Deli, so he’s almost a local. Carmen, his partner, has a background in the food industry and brings to Edithburgh her warm personality and winning smile.

I’m sure we are all pleased to know BJ will be staying. Although Pete says he’s such a fixture we’ve got to mow around him occasionally. However he is exceptionally good at crosswords if anyone needs a hand.

Peter hopes to have the support of locals and will be offering monthly bargains and friendly driveway service.

Pete and Carmen have lots of enthusiasm and plenty of refreshing ideas for the future.

Call in and say hello.

“AWESOME FUN WITH FISHING”

"SINKERS AND WHICH ONE"

Sinkers come in many varied shapes, sizes and weights, their main purpose to take the line, hook and bait, to where you want to be in the water. To keep the line fairly taut, so you can feel the slightest nibble or en-quiry from the fish your targeting,

These I use off the jetty, small for tommies, and also at Sultana Point for salmon trout (juvenile salmon) on really clear, no wind at all, upgrade to a pyramid sinker for windier days on the beach to stop rolling around, the stronger the wind and tide, the more weight you use.

The above sinkers I use for snapper, they work well, and please remember, start with the lowest weight possible, if your down 20mts, and feel a nibble, it's a long haul back up to the boat, and with a really heavy sinker on, it's hard to tell if there's an actual fish on. Ball sinkers I use for bream, and squid, when the tide is running quickly, a hand reel with a just a tommy teaser tends to float out the back and not sink, just above the swivel and in between the float, pop a good size ball sinker, and this will solve the problem.

TIPS AND HINTS:-

I've seen some humdinger rigs in my days, but my old mate Smithy takes the cake, he'd run out of sinkers on most jetty days, so out would come the spark plugs, iron bolts and big nuts, yes folks you heard me true, Smithys got big nuts, but I'll tell you this, if he's around, watch him carefully, I learnt how to garfish from this bloke, he's a good teacher, and a very good mate of mine, tight lines and safe fishing.

I first visited the Ethel in about 1983, at that time the fo'c'sle or forecastle or to the uninitiated the pointy end, was still upright and we were able to climb on and have a look round.

The wreck is in Innes National Park Yorke Peninsula and back then we had to clamber down the cliff to have a look, whereas today there are steps down to the beach.

As you can see by the footprints in the sand there is still plenty of interest in the old girl.

I think the best time to see it is mainly at the end of winter when storms and heavy seas have washed the sand away.

It was built in 1876 and it was in January 1904 that the Ethel ran aground with loss of only one life.

We all love to walk along our coastal trails and beaches and enjoy the clean pristine coastal lines of Yorke Peninsula.. Unfortunately - due to all sorts of reasons - rubbish is left on beaches, blown in from the land and sea and thrown out of car windows.

Adopt a Spot is a volunteer program that was formally known as "Friends of The Reserve Mid Coast surfing Reserve" - Encounter Coast area.

I contacted this group and they have sent me information regarding starting a similar program on Yorke Peninsula. Perhaps we could get people/families/groups to adopt an area along our coast line - keeping it rubbish free?

I walk regularly from the Old Fisherman’s Jetty to the end of the walking trail toward Sultana Point. This would be my designated area for clean up. Today I picked up rubbish that had presumably blown from building skips in the new estate - there was sandpaper, plastic bags from building material, lunch wrappers, etc. This rubbish was all caught in bushes on the trail -( thank goodness for the bushes, otherwise would all end up in the water).

I have added a photo of rubbish that I have picked up previously in one walk - amazing what you find!!!

If you are interested in adopting a spot - contact me and we can get areas mapped out - the aim is to get the whole coastline adopted for clean up

Edithburgh Institute Committee Inc President’s Report Annual General Meeting, Wednesday August 15th 2018

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to our Annual General Meeting and my 35th consecutive President’s Report. Thank you to all members of the Institute Committee for your support and commitment to maintain our Town Hall. To Beth in her role of Secretary and Keryn Dawes in his position of Vice President, I extend my special thank you. Thank you to the Yorke Peninsula Council for their ongoing financial support; Darren Braund as the Council representative on our committee and David Harding, Director Corporate and Community Services, and his staff for auditing the books. Thank you to Terry Braund for arranging the donation tin at the Sculpture Weekend, to Neil Haddow for fit-ting the stainless steel plate, (supplied by John Braund) under the pie warmer and to Kath Haddow for mak-ing oven mitts in very apt green and gold material. I also acknowledge the following for their support: Edithburgh Deli and Newsagency for handling the Institute key, Darren Braund for putting out the rubbish bins weekly, the Edithburgh Post Office for handling the hall hire booking when Beth and I are away, Friendship Club, Bakehouse Arts and Crafts, Edithburgh Markets and the Edithburgh Art Group on their “Day at the Burgh.” The upgrade of the Supper Room two years ago has continued to receive favourable comments. This year a new pie warmer was purchased for the kitchen and the upgrade of the Edithburgh Institute entry signage has come up very well. We have applied for FRRR ANZ Seeds of Renewal Programme Grant to assist with the treatment of the salt damp and wall cracking throughout the building that must be done before a much needed paint of the interior can occur. I sincerely thank all who supplied support letters for this project. Thankyou also to Rodger Griffiths and Darren Braund who assisted me with the final online application. I look forward to another successful year for the Edithburgh Institute with the support and encouragement from the Committee. Thank you John Braund (President)

The Committee is pleased to advise that picture hanging rails have been installed in the main hall. These will be much appreciated by the Edithburgh Art Group in their up-coming showing at “The Day at the ‘Burgh,” as well as any other future art displays.

We thank and acknowledge the generous donation from the Bake House Arts and Crafts in assisting the Institute Committee with the purchase of this asset.

A website …….edithburgh.orgattrations/facilities……has been set up to advertise and advise future patrons of the Institute facilities.

The Edithburgh Institute does offer a Mipto Sound System for use in the Hall.

The Committee work to maintain and make the Edithburgh Institute attractive to patrons for various activities: private, community and business.

We appreciate all public comment as to how we can improve the facility. Please direct comments to the Secretary, Beth Braund.

Have you noticed the up-grade of the entry glass???
