In 1905, Mr. Frank Jarvis and Mr. ommy Garner ormedConway Stewart & Co. Limited at 13 Paternoster Row LondonEC1, next to St Pauls Cathedral in London. oday, this area isknown as Paternoster Square having been redeveloped aferits complete destruction during the Blitz o World War II.Although there is much debate regarding the origins o theCompanys name, it is believed that the name Conway Stewartderives rom a popular vaudeville act o the day. Conway andStewart were supposedly a comedy double act who appeared atCollins Music Hall in Islington.

Drawing rom the knowledge and experience gained whileworking or De La Rue, G arner and Jarvis, two entrepreneurs,

took a great risk in leaving their secured jobs to start a newenterprise reselling ountain pens made by other manuacturers.Tey concentrated their energies and invested in importingpens rom the United States.

Afer an arduous month o persistent selling o their stock, they reaped the rewards o a rather healthy turnover o morethan 13 and 9 shillings. Tis was a great accomplishmentconsidering that the rent or their business premises was onlyfive shillings a week. Even though this turnover would bepleasing to many new ventures, the strength o De La Rue inthe ountain pen market made it impossible or the company tocontinue selling no-named ountain pens.

The BeginningGarner and Jarvis soon recognized there was an audiencedesiring good, reliable writing instruments that were alsoaffordable. Tis is when Conway Stewart began to capturea market amongst the English.

Jarvis and Garner developed a single aim, to produceelegant and beautiul, yet unctional writing instruments -a principle that Conway Stewart holds true to this day.

Te 1920s was an excellent decade or the courageous owners. Notonly did they trademark the name o the business Conway Stewart, but also their list o filling mechanisms available expanded toinclude eyedroppers, lever fillers, pump fillers and saeties. Whilethe first o these pens were almost indistinguishable rom others othat period, by 1925 Conway Stewart was coming into their own interms o design. A trademark or the name Dinkie was registeredin 1924, along with a patent or a new locking lever mechanism.Conway Stewart was rapidly growing in popularity and demand. So much so that they were taking away market shares rom otherdominant pen manuacturers.

Another introduction around this time was the use o brightly

coloured celluloid. In the 1920s, C onway Stewart were offeringdozens o different colours in their various lines, and the customercould choose rom either the simple and conservative, the brightand cheerul, or the downright flamboyant. Te pens o this periodwere very well made, and o high quality, yet remained affordable.Te wide range o models and materials allowed Conway Stewart totruly offer something or everyone when it came to ountain pens.

Tis reasonable pricing and successul marketing contributed to thesuccess o Conway Stewart or the next decade. Tey invested innew premises in 1927, which became their headquarters or the nexttwo decades. As the depression o the 1930s hit, Conway Stewartwas in the enviable position o marketing pens that were considered

good value. Although this decade proved to b e a low point orConway Stewart in terms o profit, they were able to ride out thedepression successully.

Colourul plastics were soon b ecoming a signature or ConwayStewart. It is interesting to note that they did not desi gnate titlesor their designs. Te names we recognize today have beenadopted by collectors over the years. As an example, Cracked Iceand Reversed Cracked Ice, used or many o their models or over25 years, and iger Eye, another avourite.

By the middle o the decade, Conway Stewart was ready toexpand, and in 1935 they went public, with shares being offered

to raise capital. Advertising campaigns managed to keep the nameConway Stewart in the oreront o the public mind, much thesame way o advertising rom Sheaffer, Parker and De L a Rue.

Te war years were no e asier or Conway Stewart than any othermanuacturer in England. However, they managed to emergemore than ready to participate in a post war boom. As the 1940sdrew to an end, they were still offering the public good, reliablepens at reasonable prices. Tey continued to prosper accordingly.Teir models were now sporting the amous diamond clip in placeo the old ball clip and names o their models were been phasedout in avour o model numbers, except or the Dinkie.

Te 1950s proved to be a continuation o the golden age or Conway Stewart, with many o their materials rom this erabeing eagerly sought afer today by collectors around the world. Te Herringbone pattern and many versions o marbledcolours are very popular today. Even more notable is the Number 22 Floral, with its flowered design set on a creambackground. oday, fify years afer its launch, there are still many discussions concerning the Floral. Was production limiteddue to the complexity o the material or was the market not ready to accept such an exotic plastic? Either way, whenever amint No.22 Floral is ound or sale today, there is always a demanding audience o pen collectors.

Unortunately, the 1950s also ushered in the era o injection molding or the manuacture o pens. Tis led to the utilizationo solid coloured plastics in place o the wonderul patterned celluloids.

By 1957, the C onway Stewart line was represented with pens that, while still very well made, and reliable writers, were not inthe same league in terms o appearance. It was at this time that the first ballpoint pens were offered by Conway Stewart.

Te 1950s provided the last o the great Conway Stewart models. Te company began to stagnate through the 1960s as themarket turned relentlessly towards the disposable ballpoint.

Conway Stewart persevered in trying to keep up with the market trends with their ball pen and also by launching the 106, acartridge pen mounted with a s emi-hooded nib. In the 196 0s the company was sold and relocated to Wales, where the lastpen rolled o their production floor in 1975.

Following a significant investment in research and development, a new era began with a ocus on making pens or thosewho appreciate traditional crafsmanship, objects o timeless beauty and utility, and the pleasure o using a fine pen. Not tomention the ever growing number o pen collectors around the world who treasure the Conway Stewart name and all that itstood or as Britains greatest pen maker. Tus a new era o Conway Stewart was born.

In the 1990's, the company launched a range o pens made rom solid gold; "the Gold Collection" toshowcase the work o English master crafsmen in various fields, including hand painting, enamellingand engraving. Tese antastic pieces which can sell or 14,000 and more continued ConwayStewart's tradition o excellence and are fitting companions to the pe ns o earlier generations.

Afer significant research Conway Stewart was also the first modern day pen maker to reintroducethe use o casein as a material or making pens. Casein made rom milk protein particles (conusinglyknown as nibs) are dyed and then laid down under high pressure to orm slabs rom which thecomponents are eventually ormed. Each slab has to be cured in preservative or five to six monthsbeore "weathering" or a urther two months beore any parts can be made. Tis lengthy periodrewards the eventual owner with a material that has warmth and lustre that cannot be achievedin any other material. In 1996 the Churchill model was introduced to celebrate the lie o Sir

Winston Churchill and his prolific interest in writing and literature throughout his lietime.

Today, the Conway Stewart brand is reputed as the premium English writing

instrument and is the only English pen manufacturer to make all pen

models in-house by master craftsman located in our factory

    based in Devon, England.

WinstonTe Winston named in honour o Sir Winston Churchill, our best known and perhaps the most respected Prime Ministero the 20th C entury. Sir Winston Churchill was a man who was larger than lie and had opinions to match. A substantiallybuilt man, yet a man o substance!

o compliment the classic avourite Conway Stewart Flagship model Churchill, the new Winston brings a resh, modernstyle to the timeless oversize flat top look. With a slight taper to the barrel end and a gently rounded cap top, the Winstonbrings the flat top design into the twenty first century, while still holding true to the classic styling cues that made theoriginal Conway Stewart pens o the 1920s amous.

Te Winston is the ideal choice or those who want a large pen, one that stands out in a crowd, but which still stays trueto the classic style and eel o a classic vintage Conway Stewart design. Te top mounted clip allows the pen to sit lowin the pocket, making the Winston a more practical choice or everyday use, and weve added a careully balanced solidbrass liner to the barrel to give this model a comortable hef without making ittoo heavy or comortable use.

Te Conway Stewart Winston is inspired by the greatman and the result is a substantial pen robustly built withsubtly accents o solid 18 carat gold or solid sterling silver.
