TODAY'S HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT
BRADLEY JOHN HORNUNG
Bradley John Hornung was born in Regina in February 1969, and was an 18 year-old player with his hometown Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League when he experienced an unimaginable setback. His dream of a professional hockey career ended during a game in March 1987, when he suffered a severe spinal cord injury after an awkward body check by an opposing player. He humbly denies it, but he was considered one of the most talented players in the WHL, a likely pick in the National Hockey League’s entry draft.
His life changed completely that night, but Hornung bore no anger toward the player involved, instead he faced his future with courage and perseverance. He completed high school at Archbishop O’Neil High School, and then continued his education at the University of Regina. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from Campion College and later took several classes through the Faculty of Business Administration. He worked for many years as a scout for the National Hockey League’s Chicago Black Hawks and
now assesses junior hockey players for the NHL’s central scouting bureau. In this capacity he attends every Regina Pats home game from his familiar vantage point in the Brandt Centre.
The Regina Pats have honoured Hornung by retiring his number eight jersey, and the WHL annually awards the Brad Hornung trophy to the player who best exemplifies talent, determination, and sportsmanship.

STUDENT AWARDSUNIVERISTY PRIZE IN KINESIOLOGY AND HEALTH STUDIES AND FACULTY OF KINESIOLOGY AND HEALTH STUDIES DEAN'S MEDAL
The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies is pleased to recognize Todd Alan Jones as the most deserving recipient of the University Prize in Kinesiology and Health Studies, and the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies Dean’s Medal. With a cumulative average of 90.02%, Todd is graduating with a Bachelor of Kinesiology majoring in Human Kinetics, with International recognition and Great Distinction.
Mr. Jones was named to the Dean’s Honour List on numerous occasions, and he received the Academic Silver Scholarship in the fall of 2015, 2016, and 2017, as well as other scholarships and awards. Todd also took advantage of many professional and academic development opportunities including the European Association of Sport Management Conference in Germany as well as an Interprovincial Adapted Physical Activity Symposium, both in 2016, as well as an invited student participant at the Doha GOALS International Sport Development Form held in 2015 in Los Angeles in conjunction with the Special Olympics Games.
In addition to his academic success, Todd has engaged in many community services and leadership opportunities. At the very beginning of his academic career Todd joined the Kinesiology and Health Studies Students' Society, later volunteering with Sports 4 All and Man Up Against Violence. Over time Todd experienced growth in each of these endeavours, eventually moving from being a general member to becoming the President of the Students' Society. After two years of volunteering with Sports 4 All, he then became involved in a community-based organization, First Steps Wellness Centre while taking on more opportunities representing the university as an ambassador at events in California and Germany. During the remaining two years of his degree he accepted employment as a Teaching Assistant and Supplementary Instruction Program Leader for anatomy and biomechanics.
One of his professors has ranked Todd “as one of the most academically gifted students I have encountered in my ten years of university teaching in Canada and the UK.” There is no doubt that the variety of talents and abilities Todd possesses will allow him to excel in all of his future endeavours as an active alumni of the University of Regina while he continues to represent our motto, “As one who serves.”

He completed the four year program in three and a half years while maintaining excellence in academics and volunteering in the community.

The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Regina and the School of Nursing at Saskatchewan Polytechnic congratulate Ms. Gianoli on her many accomplishments and wish her the best of luck in her future endeavours.
FACULTY OF SOCIAL WORK DEAN'S MEDAL
Latoya Taneisha Reid's altruistic nature is the impetus for her work which has seen her selflessly give her time and efforts to the well-being of others. A married mother of two, she has dedicated her life to the human services field where she has advocated on behalf of the voiceless and powerless. Her advocacy began in her home country of Jamaica where she was involved in numerous community initiatives including homework workshops, education camps and medical missions in the capacity as student council president of the Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College and Treasurer of the Chill City Community Club. As deputy chair of her alumni’s Central Executive Branch, she was pivotal in organizing a rescue mission in the aftermath of the devastating 2010 Haitian earthquake to provide medical supplies and humanitarian aid, as part of the clean-up efforts.
Her voluntary involvement at the University of Regina spans being an ambassador, serving as president of the Regina Student Parent Association, fundraising chair and vice-president of the Social Work Student Parent Association, research assistant with the Saskatchewan Disability Income Support Coalition research committee (through CMHA-SK Division), among others. Of significance is her collaboration with URSU and sponsorship from Last Mountain Distillery to organize the first Christmas supper for parents and their families, providing over 40 Christmas gifts to the children. She is most proud of her work in offering advocacy and support to student parents through child minding options while they attend classes in a bid to eliminate some of the barriers that may prevent student parents from pursuing the goal of attending university.
Her passion for giving voice to the voiceless and lifting up the downtrodden led to her pursuing her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work which will provide the platform for continuing her life’s work of empowering others and promoting the right to self-determination while engendering positive self value and personal growth. Latoya believes firmly in the power of people and their ability to create their own reality, which also means rising above the stereotypes attached by society to pursue positive change.
UNIVERSITY PRIZE IN SOCIAL WORK
Carlee Lynn Gusikoski was born and raised in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Her experience in completing her degree has been extremely informative and eye- opening regarding social issues in the province, the country, and the world. A significant influence on her decision to pursue a degree in social work comes from an interest in individuals’ stories, with a desire to learn about the interaction between genetics and the environment, and how they influence individuals and their life outcomes. Another strong influence in her decision was growing up with a mother who worked for the Ministry of Social Services. This allowed her the opportunity to speak to her mother’s colleagues and other agency professionals in the field, who told her about their experiences.
Carlee was able to complete the entirety of her degree through Great Plains College in Swift Current, which gave her the opportunity to live at home, and therefore, have time to work casually while pursuing her degree. Her work with Crisis Services in Swift Current, (which provides outreach counselling), a women’s safe shelter, and a crisis phone line, allowed her to get hands on experience in the field while completing her degree. In this role she was able to relate the work that she was doing, to what she was learning in classes. Her favourite part of her jobs was hearing the women’s stories that were staying at the shelter, and being able to have meaningful conversations with them. She also had the opportunity to complete her practicum with the Child and Youth Mental Health team within the Saskatchewan Health Authority, where she discovered a passion for clinical social work.
Carlee had many individuals who supported her on this journey. Her parents, who provided her with unwavering support, her family and friends, who were always willing to listen, and her professors and classmates, who challenged her and taught her more than she ever thought possible. Lastly, the ones who inspired her the most were the clients she worked with; those who succeeded in the face of countless challenges, and those who didn’t succeed. It is these people who drive her passion the most.
Her hopes in this profession are better spoken by the simple words of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try.”

ACADEMIC REGALIAThe academic regalia worn by the graduates and the members of the platform procession may consist of a gown, a hood or stole (worn over the shoulders), and a hat or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress for each degree conferred and, at times, for the disciplines in which the degree is awarded. Hence, the colourful variety of academic dress worn by members of the platform procession, who have graduated from dozens of Canadian and international universities, and represent particular groups.
With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and federated college students, graduates wear black gowns. PhD graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue around the collar, down the front and around the sleeves. Students graduating from the University of Regina who have been registered through a federated college wear the following: red gowns for Campion College students, sky blue gowns for First Nations University students, and royal blue gowns for Luther College students. Students are welcome to wear their Indigenous ceremonial dress, other cultural ceremonial dress, or their military or law enforcement dress uniform with, or instead of the gown at the Convocation ceremonies. In these instances, graduands must still be hooded and wear the University of Regina hood. At today’s ceremony, the dean of their respective faculty formally hoods students. The University of Regina also permits members of the Platform Party to hood graduates of their immediate family.

TThe University of Regina is situated on Treaty 4 lands with a presence in Treaty 6 territory. These are the territories of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšinapek (Saulteaux), and Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis. Today, these lands continue to be the shared territory of many diverse peoples from near and far.

The Executive of the University of Regina Council (Executive of Council) has been empowered by Council to act on its behalf in all matters with the provision that requesting a special meeting of Council may challenge a decision of the Executive. Executive of Council membership is devised as a proportional basis of the academic composition of this University.
Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic planning, brought together into faculties, of which there are currently ten. Each faculty is headed by a dean; formal membership includes the dean and the teaching members of the various associated disciplines. The deans are recognized by The University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of their respective faculties and are directly responsible to the President, through the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University of Regina Council, each faculty has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and programs.

ROBERTA MAY MCKAY AND ELMER EDWARD BRENNER Presented on Thursday, June 7
Roberta McKay and Elmer Brenner are well-known in Regina and throughout the province for their philanthropic activities, particularly in support of the arts and health care. They have also become synonymous with the revitalization of the University of Regina’s College Avenue campus. The couple served in an advisory capacity to help create plans for the campaign to rejuvenate the campus, Building Knowledge, and in 2012 donated $250,000 towards it. Now they are able to watch the refurbishing of Darke Hall and the College Building, just a short walk from where they live and work. In 2014, they donated a Faziloli piano for use in Darke Hall, stipulating that students have access to the world-class instrument. The piano is temporarily located on the main campus while construction continues, but the couple is looking forward to its return, and the restoration of Darke Hall to its historic place as a community performance centre.
McKay, a dermatologist, and Brenner, a visual artist, sponsor free Regina Symphony Orchestra programs at local library branches, the Regina Music
Festival Association, and the annual Saskatchewan Fashion Forward Designer Award. The couple also founded and supported the Saskatchewan Health Care Excellence Awards, which for ten years recognized the achievements of outstanding health care workers. Both have received a number of individual awards over the years: the City of Regina named Brenner volunteer of the year in 1978-79, and CTV Regina honoured McKay as Citizen of the Year in 2007.
SHELDON SCOTT KENNEDYPresented on Wednesday, June 6
Sheldon Kennedy is one of Canada’s most forceful advocates for the prevention of abuse and bullying, stemming from his own experience of being sexually abused by his coach while playing for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League. Kennedy captained the team to a Memorial Cup win in 1989, and then played professional hockey for ten seasons. He went public about the abuse he suffered in 1996 and began campaigning to educate people about what action to take if they suspect that abuse might be taking place. In 1998 he roller-bladed across Canada to highlight the issue, raising $1.2 million to support the bullying and abuse prevention programming delivered by the Canadian Red Cross. He and business partner Wayne McNeil later founded Respect Group, which delivers online training programs aimed at preventing bullying, abuse and harassment in sports, education and workplace settings. More than one million individuals have completed one of the three programs, and are Respect Certified.
Kennedy’s story and his advocacy work have attracted recognition in the form of a television movie and a video documentary about his life. In 2013, the Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary - where he is the lead director - was renamed in his honour. Kennedy has received several leadership awards and two honorary degrees. He was named to the Order of Canada in 2015 for his commitment to abuse prevention and support for young victims of abuse.
