TH E ACAD E M I C COSTU M E

The colorful ceremonies of The Ohio State University commencements derive from practices

originating in the Middle Ages. When European universities were taking form in the 12th and 13th

centuries, the scholars were usually clerics, and consequently they adopted costumes similar to

those of their monastic orders. Cold halls and drafty buildings called for caps and floor-length

capes with attached hoods, and the sobering influence of the church probably influenced the staid

character of the caps and gowns.

As the control of the universities gradually passed from the church, some aspects of the costumes

took on brighter hues. Old prints and engravings, however, reveal a strong similarity between the

regalia worn in early universities and that of the present day.

In light of our nation’s English heritage, academic costume has been in use in the United States

since colonial times. To establish a standard of uniformity in regard to the practice, an intercollegiate

commission was formed to prepare a code for caps, gowns and hoods that has since been adopted

by all academic institutions.

Originally round, the shape of the cap is now the familiar mortarboard square – a shape which,

according to ballad folklore, resembles a scholar’s book. Legend also has it that the privilege of

wearing a cap was the initial right of a freed Roman slave; the academic cap, therefore, has become

a sign of the freedom of scholarship. The flowing gown has become symbolic of the democracy of

scholarship, for it covers any dress that might indicate rank or social status. The hood, reserved at

The Ohio State University for those receiving doctoral and master’s degrees, not only indicates the

type of degree, but also is lined with the official colors of the university.

The GownBachelor: The Bachelor gown is black,

full cut with long pointed sleeves

Doctor: The Ohio State University dentistry

gown is black with lilac velvet panels on the

front and three velvet bars on each sleeve.

Honors EmblemThe Ohio State University honors emblem is a scarlet

and gray tasseled braid worn over the gown. Students

eligible for this curricular honor are those graduating

summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude.

The HoodDoctor: Four feet in length with a five-inch-

wide velvet edging and panel at the sides.

The lining of all hoods, which is folded out, bears the

official colors of the institution granting the degree.

The lilac color of the velvet indicates the field of study.

Cap and TasselCandidates for degrees at The Ohio State University

wear the black mortarboard with a tassel whose

color is distinctive of the degree being received.

The tassel color of the College of Dentistry is lilac.

WE LCO M E FRO M TH E D EAN

This gathering is a recognition of all you have accomplished as a graduate of our College of Dentistry, and I am so glad to celebrate today with you, your family, and friends! The degree you have earned is a testimony to your commitment and hard work during your time in our college.

Throughout my career as dean of two dental schools, I have presided over 17 convocation events. At those celebrations there have been some common themes, but this ceremony is unique -- and so are the experiences you have had on the journey that has led you to this moment.

As you all know, this is the first-ever “virtual” convocation event in the history of our college. The circumstances that have caused us to celebrate in this way have challenged every one of us – students, staff, and faculty alike – in ways that cannot be described fully. Together, we have faced a once-in-a-century global pandemic. But in the midst of that, we have made progress, found solutions to problems, and discovered that we can achieve great things even when the odds seem overwhelming.

Your successes under these trying conditions have shown that the future holds great promise for you. You will continue to grow, to overcome, and to achieve. And I believe you will one day look back on the past few months, and you will see that you have learned and grown even from the difficulties you have come through.

During your time with us, our staff and faculty have worked hard to prepare you for your future as dental professionals. It is fitting for us to make a special mention of those who have helped you along the way.

Patrick M. Lloyd, DDS, MS Dean

And it is important to recognize the family members and friends who are closest to you. The support they provided as you met your professional and personal obligations has helped make this day possible. Together, we acknowledge all they have done to ensure your success.

I also want to thank each of you for the ways you contributed to making our college a better place to care for patients and educate the next generation of oral health care providers. Your engagement and participation in our college community brought new approaches to our educational programs, clinical operations, and extracurricular endeavors. You have also helped shape the experiences of those who will follow you, and they will benefit from your efforts.

Please remember that although you were a student in our College of Dentistry for a short time, you will be an alum for a lifetime. I encourage you to stay connected with classmates and others you have met during your time here. Our college website, monthly e-newsletter, and alumni magazine can help you keep in touch. Try to find time to participate in alumni events, whether they are “virtual” or in-person. When you return to your alma mater, I know you will enjoy the experience of being back on campus. We will welcome you as our former students and our loyal alums!

Wishing you all the very best,

Patrick M. Lloyd, DDS, MSDean and Professor

Callahan Memorial Award – Brandon Mihalich

Established in 1941 by the Callahan Commission of the Ohio Dental Association, the Callahan

Memorial Award is recognized as a primary award for individual student excellence in

dentistry. The students who have achieved outstanding academic ratings and who exemplify

the highest ideals of the profession are selected for the Callahan Memorial Student Prize.

The award includes a certificate from the Callahan Memorial Commission, a cash award,

and the engraving of each recipient’s name on a plaque displayed in the college.

Harry M. Semans Memorial Award - Dental Alumni Society – Jacob Harley and Petr Vaughan

In 1968, The Ohio State University Class of 1916 established the Harry M. Semans

Memorial Scholarship Award, which is endowed by the Ohio State Dental Alumni

Society. The award is in memory of Harry M. Semans, Dean of the College of Dentistry

from 1914 to 1938, in recognition of his humanitarian services and his dedication to

the College of Dentistry and the profession of dentistry. The award is presented to

a senior dental student demonstrating outstanding scholarship and professionalism,

and it includes a certificate and a lifetime membership with the Dental Alumni Society,

and the engraving of the recipient’s name on a plaque displayed in the college.

College of Dentistry Veler Scholar – Mary Margaret Habel

In 2010, the College of Dentistry received its largest gift ever from the estate of Dr. Richard

Veler, a dentistry alumnus from the Class of 1946, and his wife, Betty G. Veler. The Richard

C. Veler, D.D.S., and Betty G. Veler Dental Scholarship provides significant annual financial

support to four D.D.S. students in the College of Dentistry (one from each class). Scholarship

recipients must demonstrate “merit, need, and outstanding moral and ethical character,”

with the understanding that acceptance of this scholarship represents a commitment to a

professional dental education, as well as a lasting commitment to the college and The Ohio

State University. Students who receive the Veler scholarship are expected to meet the highest

standards of leadership, philanthropy, and a commitment to helping others after graduation.

dentistry and service to humanity.

Omicron Kappa Upsilon had its inception with the Class of 1914 at Northwestern University

Dental School. A committee from this group submitted a petition to the faculty of the school

which stated that they were “desirous of organizing and founding a national honorary

fraternity similar to other honorary fraternities now existing in the leading universities...but

which shall consist of dental students exclusively; admission and membership to which shall

be based upon scholarship and character as manifested by election by the faculty.”

Dear Class of 2020:

I am honored to be one of your convocation

hooders. Thank you for allowing me this

opportunity. When I think of your class,

one word come to mind - resilience. The

experiences along your entire educational

journey have made you stronger and well

equipped to handle what lies ahead. My

wish for you is that you wake up every day

with gratitude in your heart. Be thankful for

your blessings, your challenges, and your

opportunities. Pursue your passions and

remember the importance of lifelong learning.

It is one of the keys to happiness and success

both professionally and personally. I have

experienced a lot in my 26 years of teaching,

but nothing quite like this. I will always

remember your class as one that showed

grace and resilience in an unprecedented

time. I wish you all the very best!

With love and gratitude,

Dr. Knobloch

Mark Morrison, DDSAssistant Professor - Clinical, Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry

A message from Dr. Morrison:

Hooding your class is a wonderful and very special

honor. This gives me the opportunity to have one

last connection to say “well done” and thank you

to an outstanding group of new Ohio State dental

professionals and future colleagues. Over the

past four years, I have gotten to know the Class of

2020 quite well. Together, we have weathered the

highs and lows of a dental education. Mastery of

important hand skills, spending lots of late evenings

(after hours) in the pre-clinic lab, or trouble shooting

a challenging patient in the clinic. I have thoroughly

enjoyed my mentoring. I wish each and every one

of you success and joy in your future careers. As

dentists, my hope is that you will find as much

excitement and curiosity in your lives as I still do.

What I will always remember are your big smiles

and our friendship. Go forth and let’s celebrate!

Best always,

Dr. Mark Morrison (aka Dr. Mark)

Dear Class of 2020:

I fondly remember my DDS convocation and

what it meant to have our selected College

faculty perform the honor of hooding. To my

classmates and me this meant the world…

we had faced and overcome all of the

challenges that dental school had given us

and achieved our goal of Doctor of Dental

Surgery. Consequently, I truly appreciate you

selecting me as a hooder for your class.

Wishing you much happiness in your

professional and personal lives!

Dr. Mallery

James B. Stone, DDSAssistant Professor-Clinical

Division of Restorative and

Prosthetic Dentistry

Dear Class of 2020:

I would like to thank you for allowing me to be

part of your graduation ceremony. You have

accomplished much in your long journey of

four years in dental school. I’m disappointed

that you don’t have the opportunity to walk

across the stage at the Mershon Auditorium

to receive your diploma. Along the way,

you have made many friends and learned

many new techniques in dentistry.

A special thanks to my Clinic 4 students,

you have been fun to work with and I

wish you all the success in the world.

Remember, it’s the friends we meet along the

way that helps us appreciate the journey.

educational journey have made you stronger and well equipped to handle what lies ahead. My wish

for you is that you wake up every day with gratitude in your heart. Be thankful for your blessings,

your challenges,

and your opportunities. Pursue your passions and remember the importance of lifelong learning. It

is one of the keys to happiness and success both professionally and personally. I have experienced

a lot in my 26 years of teaching, but nothing quite like this. I will always remember your class as one

that showed grace and resilience in an unprecedented time. I wish you all the very best!

Mark Morrison, DDSAssistant Professor - ClinicalDivision of Resotrative and Prosthetic Dentistry

A message from Dr. Morrison:

Hooding your class is a wonderful and very special honor. This gives me the opportunity to have one

last connection to say “well done” and thank you to an outstanding group of new Ohio State dental

professionals and future colleagues. Over the past four years, I have gotten to know the Class of 2020

quite well. Together, we have weathered the highs and lows of a dental education. Mastery of important

hand skills, spending lots of late evenings (after hours) in the pre-clinic lab, or trouble shooting a

challenging patient in the clinic. I have thoroughly enjoyed my mentoring. I wish each and every one of

you success and joy in your future careers. As dentists, my hope is that you will find as much excitement

and curiosity in your lives as I still do. What I will always remember are your big smiles and our friendship.

Go forth and let’s celebrate!

Best always,

Dr. Mark Morrison (aka Dr. Mark)

A message from Dr. Stone:

I would like to thank you for allowing me to be part of your graduation ceremony. You have

accomplished much in your long journey of four years in dental school. I’m disappointed that you don’t

have the opportunity to walk across the stage at the Mershon Auditorium to receive your diploma. Along

the way, you have made many friends and learned many new techniques in dentistry.

A special thanks to my Clinic 4 students, you have been fun to work with and I wish you all the success

in the world.

Remember, it’s the friends we meet along the way that helps us appreciate the journey.

It has been my absolute pleasure to work with the members of your class. Every senior class seems to

have its own collective personality. I have found your class to be among the most responsive, teachable,

and cooperative of any class I have worked with.

Oh come let’s sing Ohio’s praiseAnd songs to Alma Mater raiseWhile our hearts rebounding thrillWith joy which death alone can stillSummer’s heat or winter’s coldThe seasons pass the years will rollTime and change will surely showHow firm thy friendship . . . O - H I - O

With lyrics written in 1906 by The Ohio State University freshman Fred Cornell, Carmen Ohio stands as Ohio State’s oldest school song, and as its alma mater. No other song expresses better all the rea-sons that people love Ohio State; the friends you make here, the good times you have and the pride you feel as an Ohio State stu-dent or just a fan. Set to the Christian tune, Spanish Hymn, the sounds of Carmen Ohio bring a tear to the eye and a lump in the throat.

Adapted for brass band in 1955 by director Jack Evans and arrang-er Richard Heine, the sound of the Orton Hall chimes was added to the beginning of Carmen Ohio, and yet another tradition was born. Built in 1892, the chimes in Orton Hall tower ring out the hours dai-ly, and the Carillon is played regularly. Every Friday at noon, Car-men Ohio, Buckeye Battle Cry, Fight the Team Across the Field and other Ohio State songs peal out of the tower and float across the Oval, reminding all that Ohio State is the best place to be!

The Seal of the College of Dentistry

The seal is symbolic of the relationship of the profession of dentistry to education at The Ohio State University.

The “O” with the open book and buckeye leaf are part of the University seal and signify learning at Ohio State.

The “O” also represents the Greek letter Omicron which is the first letter of the word, Odont, meaning tooth.

The triangle, representing the Greek letter Delta, together with the cautery and the branches with leaves and berries are symbolic of the profession of dentistry.

The leaves represent the 32 teeth in the permanent dentition, the berries the 20 teeth in the deciduous dentition.
