Pre-Convention Seminar: Embalming 101: Let’s Get Back to the Basics2 CE / Tuesday / 8:00 AMDana Goodell / The Embalmers Supply Co.This seminar will explore all areas of embalming, including old and proven new techniques that will enhance skills in the preparation room for every embalmer. We will explore how to handle difficult cases we may not see on a regular basis and still present a perfect memory picture of a loved one no matter the difficulties. We also will look at embalming chemical composition, and why each embalming we encounter needs a different formula to accomplish excellent results each and every time. This program is designed for not only the experienced embalmer, but also for those who are looking to improve their skills.

Dana Goodell of Sioux City, is a Licensed Funeral Director, and Director of Sales and Education for The Embalmers Supply Company. Originally from Humeston, lowa, he attended Southwestern Community College and Dallas Institute of Funeral Service where he graduated from in 1988. He has been privileged to serve in funeral homes of all sizes within the state of lowa, and continues to work part-time at Christy Smith Funeral Homes in Sioux City. He is extremely passionate about quality embalming and the final goodbye for every family. He and his wife of 40 years Lorna, continue to live in Sioux City.

Keynote: The Power to Stand 1.5 CE / Tuesday / 10:00 AM Chris Norton / Norton MotivationChris suffered a spinal cord injury while playing football at Luther College. The doctors gave Chris a 3% chance of moving anything below his neck again. Four years later, he defied the odds and walked across stage at his college graduation with his fiancé, Emily Summers. The video went viral twice, garnered 300 million+ views, and caught the eye of the country’s top media outlets. Three years later, Chris attempted another incredible feat – this time, perhaps the most important walk of his life - down the aisle with his wife, Emily. Chris and Emily joyfully conquered the challenge – and walked seven yards down the aisle after their wedding ceremony. Seven yards symbolized the seven-year anniversary of his injury.

Chris is a well-respected motivational speaker and speaks at numerous events across the country. Chris’ message focuses on the fact that we all face challenges, but our circumstances don’t define us – we do. His message resonates with all of us: adversity is universal, but we all have the Power to Stand.

Chris created the Chris Norton Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with spinal cord and neuromuscular disabilities by providing opportunities that would not otherwise exist. This is achieved through supporting the purchase of rehabilitation equipment for organizations/facilities and providing services and scholarships for camp programs. To date, the Chris Norton Foundation has raised just under $1 million dollars.

Quality body preparation: From the cot to the chapel3 CE / Thursday / 9:00 AM Wally Hooker / Family & Friends Funeral HomeMany funeral homes are ‘dropping the ball’ and making it easier for families to choose direct cremation, without the body present. Which in part, is a result of bad experiences with poorly embalmed and dreadful appearing, publicly displayed bodies. When the public experiences awful looking bodies, the results are felt by all of us who get it! It makes us all look bad! By going the ‘extra mile’ in body preparation, we can create a peaceful and healing viewing experience for the families we serve and the general public. Talented embalmers and facial restorative specialists have the ability to give the traumatically damaged or otherwise difficult cases back to their family one last time...’whole again’!

Wallace P. (Wally) Hooker CFSP, MBIE, is the owner/funeral director/embalmer of Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, IN. He and his wife established, designed and built their funeral home in 2004. Wally attended Purdue University and is a graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science, Wheeling, IL.
