Inside the CHC Cavitation Chamber
"! The opposing water streams collide in the cavitation zone, causing millions of high energy, micro-sized cavitation bubbles to rapidly form and collapse. This stresses any bacteria and forces calcium carbonate to form in the bulk water.
#! Water from the sump is pumped under high pressure into the cavitation chamber, where it is forced to rotate at high velocity through precision nozzles.
$! The treated water exiting the cavitation chamber is returned to sump where the precipitated calcium carbonate is removed by the integral filtration system.

Controlled Hydrodynamic Cavitation
Scale Control Changes water chemistry to precipitate calcium carbonate scale
Cell Lysing Cavitation kill biologics by breaking down cell walls
Corrosion Control Vacuum strips CO2 which elevates pH creating a low corrosion environment
Cavitation Zone Chemistry
Implications
Notes: 1.! Chemical treatment tries to
keep hardness in solution. CHC removes hardness from the water.
2.! Chemicals maintain delicate balance between scale control and corrosion
3.! High temperature accelerates CaCO3 precipitation
Scale Control Using CHC 1 CO2 Stripping: High-vacuum exceeds
partial-pressure of CO2; CO2 is vented
2 Hardness Removed (!): As CO2 vents, reaction shifts right, soft, powdery CaCO3 precipitates and is filtered :
Ca(HCO3)2 (CaCO3 + H2O + CO2 Dissolved Precipitate Gas (vented)
1.! Automatic Scale Control…removes requirement to maintain delicate chemical equilibrium
2.! Cycles of Concentration Increase – resulting in less water usage
3.! Towers run cleaner – resulting in better heat transfer and lower energy usage
Notes: 1.! With CHC, you cannot
over treat.

Why is Water Savings Important? !! HVAC: 450,000+ towers in the US
!! Ammonia Refrigeration: 90,000+ condensers
!! Cooling Towers consume ~50% of fresh water in the US or ~200,000,000 gallons per day!
!! On average CHC will reduce water consumption by 20% --- we have already saved over 1,000,000,000 gallons of water!

Legionnaires’ Disease Legionnaires' outbreak in UK leave 1 dead and 15 ill Published June 05, 2012 Associated Press
LONDON – Health authorities in Scotland say one man has died and 15 people are in critical condition in hospitals after an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in the Edinburgh area. NHS Lothian, the local health authority, says it is investigating another 15 suspected cases. It said Tuesday that the man who died was in his 50s and had underlying health conditions.
Health officials are investigating the source of the outbreak. Legionnaires' disease is contracted by breathing in small droplets of water contaminated with Legionella bacteria. The bacteria can end up in artificial water supply systems, including air conditioning systems, water services and cooling towers.

Excerpt from email sent to Global Network of locations regarding their CHC experience
!! Lu***** CDC was the first site to have CHC fitted were one of the two condensers was fitted with CHC and the other fitted with a conventional automated chemical water treatment system. When comparing the two systems it was noted that the cycles of water were!reduced, the condenser pond water was clear!and tubes were cleaner on the condenser fitted with CHC compared with the condenser fitted with the conventional chemical water treatment system.!
!! Both condensers at Lu***** CDC where put onto CHC and it was noted that after an initial period the cycle of water was!reduced, the!pond water became clear, and the tubes lost scale on the condenser that was initially fitted with the chemical system.!

Effective Tower Treatment
1.! Corrosion: corrosion rate significantly below limits set by Cooling Institute for stainless and galvanized steels
2.! Biologics: In control with lower counts than prior chemical treatment
3.! Scale: In control … and towers actually became cleaner

Case Study: Cold Storage
•! New Orleans Cold Storage, America’s oldest Cold Storage Company.
•! Battling scale in a 1,000 ton ammonia system’s evaporative condenser using traditional chemical treatment.!
•! Planned to expand and wanted to avoid scale issues with their new condenser, while cleaning up the scale in existing equipment.
A Marmon Water/Berkshire Hathaway Company
Results
•! Scale was removed from the old condenser after just four months.! The tubes in the new condenser continue to look new.!
•! Cycles of concentration increased from 2.0 to 4.0 after CHC installation.! The customer is now saving 8.7 million gallons of make-up water annually at this facility alone.
•! Customer has installed four additional CHC systems at three other facilities.

Case Study: Hotel & Convention Center
•! Two separate cooling systems at hotel & convention center in San Marcos, TX.
•! Scale issues were so prevalent in both towers that de-scaling/cleaning was required from outside vendor on quarterly basis.
•! Facility was using acid in cooling water treatment program with evidence of corrosion in engine room.
A Marmon Water/Berkshire Hathaway Company
Results
•! Scale gradually being removed from interior heat transfer surfaces of both cooling towers.
•! Recirculating water clarity in cooling tower basins is better than at any point under chemical treatment.
•! Completely eliminated need for on-site hazardous chemicals (including acid) for treating towers.
