S800 I/O System

for cost-effective process control, down to the last field device

S800 I/O is a comprehensive, distributed, process I/O system that communicates with parent controllers over industry-standard field buses. Thanks to its broad connectivity it fits a wide range of process controllers from ABB and others. And it bears the name of ABB, the world leader in industrial IT.

By permitting installation in the field, close to sensors and actuators, S800 I/O reduces the installation cost by reducing the cost of cabling. And thanks to benefits such as:

From project engineering to plant maintenance

S800 I/O makes work easier

The light version, S800L I/O, is a cost-effective solution for less demanding applications

S800 I/O compo-nents; a fieldbus communication inter-face, two fully featured S800 I/O modules and a vacant termination base.

flexibility, permitting a virtually infinite number of installation arrangements, small or large, indoors or outdoors, wall mount-ing or floor standing,

modularity, permitting step-by-step expansion without bottlenecks ever developing,

cost-effectiveness, making you save on hardware, cabling, installation and mainte-nance,

reliability thanks to features such as autodiagnostics and redundancy with bumpless, automatic, change-over,

it helps you get a tighter grip on production and thereby improve profitability. Light, upright and

lateral I/O modules can be mixed andmatched arbitrarily.

S800 I/O is almost completely configuration-free; all you have to do is to set the fieldbus station address on the switches provided.

Plug-in extension cables allow multiple mounting rails and flexible cabinet layouts.

Light or fully featured

S800 I/O comes in two versions, light or fully featured. The light version - designated S800L I/O - is optimized for applications where the basic functionality of interfacing with field devices for both measuring and control is the essence. The fully featured version, desig-nated S800 I/O, is intended for more de-manding applications where hot swap of I/O modules is of interest for availability’s sake. Both versions can co-exist on the same rail.

Advant Fieldbus 100 or Profibus DP

Both versions of the I/O system support both Advant Fieldbus 100 and Profibus DP. So they are compatible with a wide range of process controllers from ABB and other suppliers.

Compact or expanded installation

Both versions of the I/O system are intended for mounting on standard DIN rails. Multipole connectors on the sides extend the internal communication bus incrementally as new modules are snapped on and pushed sideways to make contact with its existing neighbor.

S800L I/O modules are indivisible and equipped with detachable screw terminal blocks along the bottom where the process cabling is terminated.

Fully featured S800 I/O modules on the other hand consist of two parts, a passive termina-tion base and an active I/O module that plugs onto this base. The base is equipped with connection terminals for all in- and outgoing cables.

There are two types of termination bases, one Compact, for upright module installation, and

Hardware keys ensure that only the right type of module

can be plugged onto each base

Subordinated I/O clusters can be connected as far as 200 m away by fiber-optic exten-sion cable (ModuleBus). Ideal for electrically noisy environments and sprawling equipment sets.

From left to right, redun-dant pairs of fieldbus interfaces, process inputs and process outputs

one Expanded, for lateral installation. The former results in space savings with maximum I/O channels per rail, the latter in more room for cable termination. Expanded termination bases provide fuses and terminals for field power distribution, eliminating the need for external cable marshaling in the majority of cases.

Compact and extended termination bases can coexist in the same I/O station, meaning that they can be mixed and matched to meet the needs for termination of each field device. I.e. maximum installation flexibility.

The space and environmental protection requirements are modest, making S800 I/O ideal for distributed out-front installation for maximum cost savings.

Single or redundant solutions

S800 I/O offers redundancy options for power supply and all host-connection modes: direct, fiber-optic, and fieldbus. And follows through with redundancy options for all downstream links: internal bus and I/O channels. Meaning that all weak links can be eliminated.

Safe or hazardous areas

The fully featured version includes intrinsic safety I/O modules, facilitating installation of I/O stations in potentially hazardous Class I, Div. 2 areas and connection to field devices in hazard-ous Class I, Div. 1 areas (Zones 2 - 0).

Consequently, you can use S800 I/O throughout your plant, standardization that all involved will benefit from.

Analog or digital I/O

Digital process interfacing modules typically provide 16 channels while analog modules offer8. Since an S800 I/O station can accommodate 12 I/O modules, this means up to 192 digitals or 96 analogs per station or any mix between the two extremes. With optional ModuleBus expansion, up to 24 I/O modules can be accommodated, thus doubling the above-mentioned I/O capacity.

The I/O modules of a station can all be mounted on a single rail or be distributed across several, in the latter case using plug-in interconnecting cables.

These alternatives make S800 I/O fit a wide range of standard wall-mounting and floor-standing enclosures. A fiber-optic ModuleBus even makes it possible to break up S800 I/O stations into clusters installed hundreds of meters apart, i.e., a cost-effective and noise-immune way of implementing distributed control.

There are inputs and outputs for indus-try-standard d.c. and a.c. signal levels and devices, including resistance-temperature sensors and thermocouples. There are even pulse and frequency counters as well as intrinsic safety- and HART®-supporting modules. So just about all the process devices we can think of can be wired up to S800 I/O stations with a minimum of field cabling and intermediate signal conditioning.

ABB’s AC800 M is one of many industrial controllers that can use S800 I/O for process communi-cation. Here equipped with two communication modules (left) and one S800 I/O module (right).

A more fully equipped S800 I/O station with redundant fieldbus interfaces, redundant I/O modules (two of which are connected by bus extension cables) and a subordinated I/O cluster connected via an optical module bus loop.

A single S800 I/O station can be expanded to hold hundreds of I/O channels. Further stations can be installed as needed.

S800 I/O works with a wide range of process controllers from ABB and others.

Transparent configuration

S800 I/O stations are configured as part of the parent controller like local I/O, which means that no additional knowledge or skills are required. Configurations defined in this way are downloaded automatically on start-up.

Similarly, the I/O system supports the FDT/ DTM standard and offers HART® pass-through, that is, a consistent, easy-to-use interface toward fieldbus-connected devices. Thanks to it all, such devices can be managed in the same easy way, regardless of type or make.

Ample means for keeping production up

Plenty of features are built into S800 I/O to make it reliable, fault tolerant and autodiagnosing, e.g.:

Diagnostic LEDs on all modules,

High data communication security for zero errors,

Optional dual redundancy in everything from power supply, through fieldbus communication, to I/O channels,

Each input and output can be set individu-ally to take on a predefined value or freeze in case of serious trouble,

Fully featured S800 I/O modules can be withdrawn and reinserted live without disturbing the rest of the station. Hardware and software keys ensure that only mod-ules of the right type can be inserted.

Hot Configuration In Run. Each I/O station can be reconfigured from the host system while in full, uninterrupted, service.

These and other features, improve reliability, boost availability and shorten downtimes.

Reliability and ruggedness confirmed

S800 I/O has passed tough type tests by leading maritime inspection and classification societies, confirming that the equipment is able to operate reliably and durably even under the most extreme conditions. Reliability and durability you will benefit from.

Environment-friendly

The S800 I/O family is designed and manufac-tured according to the environmental protec-tion standard ISO 14001. So you can go for it with a clear conscience.
