Case Study: Building a Market and School in Togo

In Togo, when we needed to relocate an old community market further from the plant location, we saw an opportunity to improve the market conditions by building a new, more stable structure. The new market, erected on concrete with aluminum roofing, reduces the dust contamination of food sold in the market, shields traders from the sun, and also provides adequate shelter from rain. In Kakome, Togo, children often had to commute long distances in difficult circumstances to get to school because of limited capacity at the school closest to their home. Recognizing this burden, ContourGlobal constructed a new school building in 2009 to serve approximately four hundred students. Since 2009, we have maintained the school and catered to student needs by donating books and supplies. In 2012 we enclosed the recreational area to make it safer for the students and in 2013 we will add another wing to the existing building. Our future plans include installing solar panels at the school to provide electricity, allowing for evening classes and community activities at the school.

Case Study: Education in Rwanda

ContourGlobal’s KivuWatt team in Kibuye, Rwanda works closely with the Gasura primary school and other primary and secondary schools in the area. In 2010, we provided two hybrid cows to the primary school to provide milk for the students and teach them about caring for animals. The cows were cleverly named Kivu and Watt and have since given birth to a young female calf. Additionally, we have spent time working with the staff of the school, training teachers on computer software programs using laptops donated by our lender, the African Development Bank. In 2013, we also built a library at the school, stocking it with several hundred books and providing a comfortable reading area for students. Our educational efforts also extended to 10 primary schools and 6 secondary schools when we did a traffic safety campaign, teaching over 7,000 students the importance of road safety and following traffic rules.

Case Study: Promoting Environmental Awareness in Nigeria

ContourGlobal Nigeria’s Apapa business hosted an environmental awareness seminar in 2012 for two secondary schools to promote environmental awareness on issues such as carbon emissions, recycling and environmental hazards. The keynote speaker at the event was Mr. Lasisi Adedoyin, Principal Scientific Officer of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment. Also in 2013 a donation of mosquito nets was donated to the Ajeromi General Hospital Ajegunle Apapa . Other speakers included the principal of the school and our Operations and Site managers. In addition to hosting the seminar, the Apapa team took the next step of providing the students with the tools to be environmentally conscious. We donated recycling bins and cleaning supplies to help the students recycle and keep their schools clean.
