DENTAL PROFESSIONS

Challenges in the Workplace Caused by Personality & generational differencesWe are experiencing a changing economy, shifting workplace demographics and a shortage of real talent and skilled staff in the dental office. One of the reasons for this is generational differences. Researchers tell us that for the first time in history we have four generations working side by side in today’s workplace. Each generation walks into the workplace with different values, work ethics, and ideas as to how the dental office should operate. They rarely interact with each other and often do not recognize each other’s skills or strengths. When there is misunderstanding and lack of appreciation, conflict is created, production is reduced, staff turnover increases, and team morale decreases. In this interactive workshop you will learn:

•Thefourpersonalitytypesandhowtovaluethedifferences •Thegenerationaldifferences:theirhistory,values,andmotivation •Eachgeneration’sclashpoints •Howtocommunicateeffectivelywiththedifferentpersonalities

and generations •Whatittakestoretainandcreatejobsecurityforeachgeneration

This workshop is a must for everyone in the dental office!

Identify and respect the differences that can lead to miscommunication and misunderstandings. Learn to understand your patients’ expectations and discover methods to achieve a successful outcome.

the Role of dentistry in total Body HealthThis course will provide you with insight in the current and future role of dentistry in the field of total body health. Traditionally the role of dentistry has been limited to the maintenance of good oral health; however, dentistry has expanded recently into other fields such as cosmetics, oral cancer screening, management of chronic head and neck pain, and management and prevention of sleep-disordered breathing. We have begun to understand that some ailments could very well be connected to others and we have to approach cases in a holistic and interdisciplinary manner. Cooperation between different health practitioners is essential in order to solve some of these chronic ailments. Quite frequently symptoms will appear in the head and neck area and, specifically, in the oral cavity. Dentistry can play an important role in the co-treatment of some of these cases. This course will be of interest to dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists, chiropractors, physical therapists, physicians, and anyone with a general interest in this topic. It will be presented in a multimedia format.

UFV respects the learning that students bring to our institution. Prior Learning Assessment (PLAR) is a process that gives you the opportunity to receive credit for what you already know and can do. Once you are approved, qualified specialists at UFV assess the skills and knowledge that you have already acquired against learning outcomes of UFV courses and programs.

A good first step in PLAR is to develop a learning portfolio to confirm your educational and career planning and prove your learning by identifying and documenting your skills and knowledge. The learning portfolio can support your identification of courses you are interested in challenging. You can use that recognition to begin your studies at the right place in your program.

natural SoapmakingIn this course, we will make three natural soaps. The first is a shampoo bar, which is a completely natural conditioning shampoo, incorporating many excellent cleansing and conditioning fats and oils. Because the shampoo bar is solid, it doesn’t require extra preservatives. The bar is made with palm, coconut, castor, avocado, and jojoba oils, plus cocoa and shea butter. It is a hard soap that lathers well and cleans the hair thoroughly. The second is a pure castille soap, a beautiful soft skin care bar that gives lots of bubbly lather. It is made with olive oil and is a wonderful moisturizer rich in vitamin E and other nutrients. It softens the skin by attracting and holding in the moisture. The third is a moisturizing soap, a hard soap bar that cleans and lathers beautifully. This soap is made with palm, coconut, canola and sunflower oil. The combination of these oils creates wonderful moisturizing properties that lather very well, even in salt water. We will add colour to this soap to make it more attractive. A supply fee of $20 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Soapmaking for BeginnersIn this class, we will make three different types of soap: layered, chunky, and coloured. We will use a class soap base that incorporates four base oils. This formulation combines quality and economy and is a lot of fun because you can do so many different things with it. This soap base makes a wonderful moisturizing bar which we will layer into two different colours. We will also create a chunky soap which gives each bar a different look. The third soap will be a swirl soap with white as the base and a colour added to make the soap bar look interesting. This is an opportunity to make unique, custom and attractive soap bars. A supply fee of $20 is payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

Human Performance in aircraft MaintenanceThis course is intended for aviation maintenance personnel with technical responsibilities, and promotes awareness of human performance issues. Through case studies, you will investigate what caused an error and why it happened, and determine the contributing factors that interfered with performance at the critical moment. You will also develop “safety net strategies” to prevent future errors from occurring. We will also examine the factors that influence human error and the importance of error management, including prevention and containment. We will emphasize the issues, problems, and solutions of unsafe acts, attitudes, errors, and deliberate actions attributed to human behaviour and the roles supervisors and management personnel play in these actions. We will study the human limitations in the light of human engineering, human reliability, stress, medical standards, drug abuse, and human physiology.

The regulatory requirement applies to approved maintenance organization certificate (AMOC) holders, air operator certificate (AOC) holders and flight training unit operating certificate (FTUOC) holders. All technical employees (anyone performing functions that are

mandated by the regulations) are required to have this training. This includes personnel working directly on-aircraft, as well as personnel with off-aircraft responsibilities such as technical records.
