Adult Foster Homes Consider Becoming an Owner!

See the summer web-based training schedule on page 4.

Our local Adult Foster Home (AFH) Licensors would like to encourage you to think about starting your own small business as an Adult Foster Home operator. An AFH is a house where care is provided for compensation to fve or fewer adults who are 65 years of age or older, or an adult with a physical disability, in a safe and homelike environment.

Adult Foster Homes are in high demand as the population ages and the number of AFHs in our area has declined. While there can be a lot to learn about managing an AFH in the beginning, the work is also very rewarding personally and professionally. Owning and operating an AFH combines a passion for caregiving and the satisfaction of owning your own business.

Often new AFH owners have experience working in an AFH as a caregiver or Resident Manager. They decide to pursue the satisfaction of being self-employed, working from home and increasing their income, all while caring and protecting a vulnerable population. It is a great opportunity for someone who wants to be independent, own a small business and make an impact in people’s lives.

Family members who have been caregivers for a parent or grandparent in their own home often realize they want to continue to provide love and support to those needing care. An AFH licensee provides a homelike setting for care, providing Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as eating, dressing and grooming, bathing and personal hygiene, mobility, elimination, and cognition assistance.

If living in the home is not an option, the AFH can be stafed with a qualifed resident manager and it is possible to expand and own more than one AFH. This is a small business opportunity and you would be employing caregivers. The home can be rented or owned. Though some medical professionals have elected to own and operate an AFH and fnd being their own boss very rewarding a medical degree is not required to be an owner or caregiver in an AFH.

There is a great deal of training available to help with all aspects of an AFH. RCC’s Ensuring Quality Care class can help provide some of the information you will need to meet state requirements. You are supported by Licensors and trainers before, during and after an AFH is opened.

Being an AFH owner is a 24/7 responsibility. Our local Small Business Development Centers have great, free advice on hiring procedures and how to create a business startup plan. The frst step in learning what you need to know about opening your own AFH is a free Orientation.

Please contact the Licensing staf for more information and to sign up for Orientation. Contact Jonas Wolfer at (541) 618-7879 or [email protected].
