AEROSPACE MANUFACTURING AND REPAIR Triumph Airborne Structures – Artie PaholkeArtie Paholke, employee with Triumph Airborne Structures, is currently enrolled in NPC’s Introduction to Aerospace Manufacturing and Repair program. Artie began working for Triumph in February in the Machine Shop. He has since moved up to his current position as Sheet Metal Mechanic. According to Brett Chipps, Triumph’s Nacelle Manager, “Artie has gained a great deal of general sheet metal skills through the NPC Aerospace program. His technical knowledge with component maintenance manuals and blueprints has also increased tremendously. He’s the kind of employee we are proud to have and happy to invest in.” When asked about the benefits of the program, Artie said “these classes have helped me develop a very strong baseline to perform the tasks I’m assigned each day. I look forward to the composites portion of the program and the opportunity to learn even more.”

COMPUTER NUMERIC CONTROL (CNC) MACHINING TECHNOLOGYTimber Automation – Steven SommerSteven Sommer completed the CNC Milling classes at NPC’s Innovative Technologies Center in October of 2017. Following completion of the program he began working in the field immediately. According to John Favorite, Timber Automation plant manager, “When Steven came to us as a graduate from the ITC program, we had no hesitation giving him an opportunity in our machine shop. Since his hire date, he has earned the nickname ‘Sponge’ because of his strong desire to learn. In a very short period he has learned operation of all our CNC equipment. The CNC class at the Innovative Technologies Center prepared him for that.” When asked how he felt the CNC classes helped him, Steven is quick to say “This class gave me an invaluable shot to change my life. I have been given the opportunity to grow in a career that I enjoy and take pride in. The ITC got me started on this path and believe me when I say it’s been a ride worth every moment!”

CONTINUING EDUCATION TRAININGPottery Student – Patti ShawPatti Shaw spent 30 years teaching junior high school. She was never a typical books and study guide teacher. She spent endless hours finding ways for her students to learn through more inspired and creative avenues that not only challenged their thoughts, but their resourcefulness and imagination as well. After retiring over five years ago, she knew she needed to find a creative outlet to fill the void and began learning about mosaic art. Then a friend talked her into enrolling in a pottery class at NPC. Patti said, “As soon as my hands touched that clay, I knew I had found my place.” She now strives to create one-of-a-kind pieces of art that combine mixed media including ceramics, mosaic, and collage. “I have found my happy place,” Patti often says, “Getting involved in art and pottery totally changes the way you look at everything in this world. I have fun all the time.”

Careers in CNC Machining TechnologyThose considering a career in CNC Machining Technology should be mechanically inclined and understand the basics of electronics and computers. Attention to detail and the ability to follow precise directions are vital to a CNC programmer as is the ability to work independently.

CNC Operator – also known as a CNC machinist, implements the plans created by a CNC programmer to run a CNC machine. This is done by setting the machine and loading it with the right cutting tools as indicated by the program which was developed to produce a specific part. The work of a CNC operator results in large numbers of precisely cut parts created to fill orders from a variety of industries. CNC operators may also have experience in machining or programming.

CNC Programmer – develop and run programs which direct the CNC machines to cut and shape metal or plastic for such things as airplanes, automobiles and other industrial machines. CNC programmers use blueprints and 3-dimensional computer designs to create the programs which result in precisely cut products.
