• Very large landmasses on Earth
• They are generally identified by convention rather than any strict criteria
• In geology, continents are described by means of tectonic plates. Plate tectonics is the process and study of the movement, collision and division of continents.

ETYMOLOGY OF EUROPE
In ancient Greek mythology, Europa was
a Phoenician princess whom
Zeus abducted after assuming the form
of a dazzling white bull. He took her to
the island of Crete where she gave birth
to Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Sarpedon.
For Homer, Europe was a mythological
queen of Crete, not a geographical
designation.

BOUNDARIES OF ASIA
The boundaries of Asia are
culturally determined, as
there is no clear geographical
separation between it
and Europe, which together
form one continuous
landmass called Eurasia.

ETYMOLOGY OF AFRICA
“Afri” was a Latin name used to
refer to the Carthaginians, who
dwelt in North Africa in modern-
day Tunisia. This name seems to
have originally referred to a native
Libyan tribe. The name is usually
connected with Phoenician afar or
"dust“.

ECONOMY OF AFRICA
Although it has abundant natural resources,
Africa remains the world's poorest and
most underdeveloped continent, the result
of a variety of causes that may
include corrupt governments that have
often committed serious human rights
violations, failed central planning, high
levels of illiteracy, lack of access to foreign
capital, and frequent tribal and military
conflict.

ETYMOLOGY OF AUSTRALIA
Archaeological terminology for this
region has changed repeatedly. Prior
to the 1970s, the single Pleistocene
landmass was called Australasia,
derived from the Latin australis,
meaning "southern“.

ANTARTICA
Antarctica is Earth's
southernmost continent, containing the
geographic South Pole. It is situated in
the Antarctic region of the Southern
Hemisphere, almost entirely south of
the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by
theSouthern Ocean. At 14.0
million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the
fifth-largest continent in area
![Page 54: Continents](https://reader038.vdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103113/554a5fa3b4c90531228b54b2/html5/thumbnails/54.jpg)
ANTARTICA
About 98% of Antarctica is
covered by ice that
averages at least 1.9
kilometres (1.2 mi) in
thickness, which extends to
all but the northernmost
reaches of the Antarctic
Peninsula.
![Page 55: Continents](https://reader038.vdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103113/554a5fa3b4c90531228b54b2/html5/thumbnails/55.jpg)
ANTARTICA
Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and
has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Antarctica is
considered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches)
along the coast and far less inland. The temperature in Antarctica has
reached −89 °C (−129 °F).
![Page 56: Continents](https://reader038.vdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103113/554a5fa3b4c90531228b54b2/html5/thumbnails/56.jpg)
ANTARTICA
There are no permanent human
residents, but anywhere from
1,000 to 5,000 people reside
throughout the year at the
research stations scattered
across the continent. Only cold-
adapted organisms survive.
![Page 57: Continents](https://reader038.vdocuments.us/reader038/viewer/2022103113/554a5fa3b4c90531228b54b2/html5/thumbnails/57.jpg)
ANTARTICA
The Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1959 by
12 countries; to date, 49 countries have
signed the treaty. The treaty prohibits
military activities and mineral mining,
prohibits nuclear explosions and nuclear
waste disposal, supports scientific research,
and protects the continent's ecozone.
Ongoing experiments are conducted by
more than 4,000 scientists from many
nations.
