This competition will include contestants sitting down with each judge individually. You will need to prepare
and bring with you one of the following: Info Sheet (for Jr/Pre/Teens) or complete a Resume (for Miss). Look
for details in Contestant Packet #2. Your Info Sheet/Resume will be looked at by the Interview panel of
judges, and a "First Impression" score will account for 20% of the overall Interview Score weight. Judged on
ability to communicate, poise and presentation, quality of answers, interview etiquette, and “HeartShine.”
30%
Also known as the Speech competition, Personal Introduction includes a short (two minutes or under for Miss,
60 seconds or under for Jr. Teen, Pre-Teen, and Teen) introduction to let the judges and audience know more
about you. It should be attention-grabbing and true to your own style and personality. You will perform your
Personal Introduction twice in front of a panel of judges; once before your age group begins the interview
process (for the Interview judging panel) and once more during the finale (on-stage with mic). Judged on
public speaking ability, mic etiquette, stage presence, inclusion of contestant’s “platform,” and overall
“HeartShine.”
Formal Wear, also known as On-Stage Presentation, is performed during the finale in the full-length ballgown
of your choice. When making your dress selection, please keep in mind fit, age-appropriateness, length (all
gowns must touch the floor), and the train (sweeps under 6” accepted). Judged on stage presence, elegance and
poise, and “HeartShine.”
Interview (and your
Personal Introduction
performance for the
Interview Judging Panel)
will be completed in your

Contestant T-Shirt
(required) and black pants/
slacks/skirt.

stage “Improptu Question”
will be added during the

failed to attend all
rehearsals may be marked
down by up to 5 points.

Overview of Requirements for the New Royal Court
Congratulations on starting your journey to HeartShine’s sixth annual Miss California
pageant. Pageant weekend will consist of the 4 required Overall Areas of Competition, where the
combined scores will determine our new Miss California Royal (2nd runner up), Miss California
Princess (1st runner up), and Miss California Queen, in all four age divisions. The four Miss
California Queens will, throughout their reign, be expected to maintain HeartShine’s code of conduct
which includes good sportsmanship, leadership, maintaining a “clean” social media presence, and
attending regular community and appearance events in title. Regular community involvement for
queens includes at least two HeartShine events per month, every month, until her reign is over and
she crowns her successor at Miss California HeartShine 2018. Most Queens in the HeartShine system
attend much more than two events per month. For Princesses, this minimum requirement changes to
one event per month. Royals have no requirement for service although it is encouraged. Additionally,
Miss California Princesses and Royals are eligible to compete for the chance at a Miss California
Queen title the following if, and only if, they relinquish their state title no later than Jan. 1st 2018.
If you were to be honored with a top 3 title at HeartShine’s State Pageant this year,
you will be given a complete guidebook including expectations, dress code,
and more following shortly after crowning ceremony.
