Office of the President

What a great team we have had on this Cornhusker Corvette

Club board of directors. Everyone has done a fine job in making

this a fun and interesting year.

As we look forward to 2019, a few members of the Cornhusker

Corvette Club board – who have served admirably – are exiting

the board this year. This creates an opportunity for a few new

members to join our Cornhusker Corvette Club board and add

their creativity and efforts.

This is a great club where everyone appreciates any and all

efforts to create a fun and interesting experience. You do not have to be an expert to serve on the Cornhusker

Corvette Club board, you just need to be willing to serve in the best interest of the Corvette enthusiast, while

creating opportunities to utilize our Corvettes. And as we often say – We have something for everyone! Working

with the team on the Cornhusker Corvette Club board, we look for ways to make this a fun and exciting club for

everyone.

If we share the work, we also get to enjoy the results.

Look at your schedule and see if there is an opportunity to be a part of the Cornhusker Corvette Club board. It is a

very rewarding experience. Your fellow club members will support you and with all the members we have, the

work is done quickly with many helping hands.

It has been a great experience this year, as your president, to have so many willing and able people on the

Cornhusker Corvette Club board. We will miss those that have decided to exit, but we also look forward to some

new and capable members to the Cornhusker Corvette Club board for 2019.

We will be accepting nominations at the September and October general meetings. Voting will be at the

November meeting. Make your Cornhusker Corvette Club THE club to be a part of!

THANK YOU to all those who have been a part of the 2018 Cornhusker Corvette Club board. You should be proud

and excited about all the great events and happenings you have enabled this year!

Your President,

Kevin Reit

From the Governor’s desk…

As summer is giving way to fall, the nights are cooling off and the days aren’t quite so

unbearable. But, don’t put that Corvette away just yet. We still have a lot of events

coming our way. On the racing scene, we have 3 more events. One at Southeast

Community College in Lincoln and two at Lincoln Airpark. The last event of the season

on 20-21 October is the West Region Fundraiser. I hope to see plenty of CCC members

out supporting this event as it is the capstone of our competition season. Come out

and watch, help with corners or serving meals or come out for a ride (you ask and a

driver will be happy to take you for a lap or two).

We still have several social events left for the year as well. The Miles for Madonna is being held September 22 at

Zorinski, come out and support Gene as he runs/walks/crawls to raise money for Madonna Rehabilitation Center.

Feel like heading out of town, there is a Corvette weekend in Eureka Springs Arkansas 4-7 October and don’t

forget the Fall Color Run 14 October and the Huber car show on the 27th. Still a lot to do before we are stuck

inside with the blowing snow wishing for warmer weather. Get out and enjoy it.

This past weekend I attended the NCCC Governors meeting in Saint Louis. National Elections are upon us and I

will be soliciting club input on voting. There is only one contested position this year and that is for President of

NCCC, Bernyce Molenda from Tin Hall Toys Corvette Club (host of the recent NCCC Convention in New Orleans) is

running against Dale Samuelson from Northern Illinois Corvette Club (past NCCC Competition Director). You can

read the candidate’s position papers at https://www.corvettesnccc.org/Candidates/OfficerElect19-20_campaign-

begin.html the rest of the un-contested candidates have their bios and information on the same page. I will ask

for club consensus on each of these positions at the General Meeting on September 20th.

Keep in mind that local elections for Cornhusker Corvette Club will be happening over the next few months as

well. If you are interested in supporting the organization as an elected member, please throw your hat into the

ring. The first step may be a little daunting but experiencing the camaraderie, conviction and commitment of the

board of directors to the continued success of the CCC is rewarding.

2018 may be coming to a slow close but 2019 is already on the horizon and planning is already taking place for

socials, club activities, drag racing, autocross and a host of other events to ensure we are a club that has

something for everyone.

Summer Festival 2018 Looking in the Rear View

The 2018 Summer Festival was a great success. These things don’t happen by themselves and it takes a

great team to make a successful event. Many, Many Thanks to Gene & Kathy

Gau for hosting the Pot Luck dinner and Valve Cover Racing at the Lucky Duck

on the Friday kickoff. Thank You Perry Dawes for organizing and running the

valve cover racing, they were enjoyed by all. To Jonathan Brown for working

endlessly as Governor to acquire all the sanctions and as always running timing

along with Kathy Brisbois. Don Angeroth, Ray Kennedy and Jerry Kolaleski, and

JB and PL for tech all three days. for their efforts during the racing on Sat and

Sunday. Brenda Salmans and Terri Fagan for running the golf tournament on

Sunday. There was one questionable call and we’ll have to check the instant replay

on who actually had the longest drive while wearing a pair of oven mitts, but they

both did a great job. Also, Ray Zimmerman for running the Car Show at Madonna

and Gene Gau again for a fantastic Rallye.

Here is our Summer Festival by the numbers: George Horst

started off the racing events by hitting a cone at tech on Fri

night. We fined him ten racing points for that violation. No,

not really. You might remind him from time to time just for

fun. We had 86 Members at the Pot Luck with 18

participating in Valve Cover Racing. I went down early with

a poorly engineered and even worse replica of a World War

II bomber. I didn’t win anything but it was built like a B-17

from the Bloody 100th. ***Sigh*** We had 43 for Low-Speed Autocross on Sat and Ray Kennedy only

spun out twice. We had about that same number at Quaker Steak & Lube Sat evening. 33 racers enjoyed

the High-Speed events on Sunday while Don Angeroth lead the 4 of those had to be towed out of the mud

on his first lap and ultimately leaving us to wonder what type of farmer Randy Williams really is. 10

members tried to stay dry on the golf course at Papio Green Par 3 Golf Course. We had about 35 cars for

the show at Madonna and about 43 leaving tracks across western Douglas county.

Valve Cover Racing

by Perry Dawes

Our 2018 Cornhusker Corvette Club Summer Festival was “spiced up”

with a little indoor racing activity called Valve Cover Racing.

There were 21 race cars in competition for both the Speed Race (Drags)

and the People’s Choice events. For the Speed Race, each member raced his/her car twice, their times

were averaged and the 8 fastest times qualified for the finals. The finals qualifiers included: Ron

Bockerman, Linda Dawes, Perry Dawes, Nick Gau, Ron Norgard, Howard Renshaw, Karla Richmond,

and Ray Zimmerman. After each finalist ran their car twice, the times were averaged and the final

standings were as follows:

1st Place Ron Norgard (actually Colleen)

2nd Place Ron Bockerman

3rd Place Ray Zimmerman

Governor, Jonathan Brown presented a trophy to each winner. For the People’s Choice, voters were

asked to select the race car they liked best in 4 different categories, with the following results:

“Coolest Design” Jonathan Brown

“Ugliest Car” Gene Gau

“Sexiest Car” Linda Dawes

“Happiest Car” Vicki Manly

Page 10: Contents...The Miles for Madonna is being held September 22 at Zorinski, come out and support Gene as he runs/walks/crawls to raise money for Madonna Rehabilitation Center. Feel like

Page | 10 September 2018

Thanks to Nick Gau and Linda Adams for running the Electronic Timing System, Mike

Manly, John Salmons, Sam DePetro, and Dale Williamson for being the “Car

Jockeys” and to Kevin Reit who was our “Steadfast Starter”. Also thanks to Bill

and Kathy Cashell for handling the voting for the People’s Choice. Participants and

spectators all seemed to enjoy the friendly competition.

For those members that have not had the opportunity to participate in the Valve

Cover Racing, I would encourage you to build a valve cover race car and join in the

fun. The rules for constructing a racer are very simple, and are as follows:

* No engine, propulsion, or moving weights. Gravity is your friend. (weights must be secured)

* Valve cover must be GM, either a small block(283, 327 Cu.In.) or a big block (348, 396, etc.)

* Valve cover must retain its original gasket sealing surface. Other alterations are allowed.

* The race car must have a chassis, but nothing may extend beyond the gasket surface on the front

of the race car. This applies to the wheels also.

* There is a maximum of 4 wheels allowed, either inside or outside of the valve cover.

* The race car must be clean (no sludge) If a race car drips oil or grease, it is disqualified.

* The dimensions of the race car are as follows:

Maximum Length = 30 inches

Maximum Width = 10 inches

Maximum Height = 9 inches

Maximum Weight = 8 pounds (official digital scales)

Maximum Wheel Diameter = 4 inches

The Cornhusker Corvette Club is discussing the possibility of another Valve

Cover Race to be held sometime in the Winter (when we have our Corvettes

“asleep”), so now is the time to consider making your valve cover race car so

you can have fun at the next racing event. There is even some thought about

awarding club points for participating in this program. At the 2019 NCCC

Convention held in Denver next July, they are planning Valve Cover Racing,

and have asked to use our track and timing system. This decision will be

made by our Board of Directors. If that occurs, it would be awesome for

Cornhusker Club Valve Cover racers to go there and show everyone how we “run”.

If you have any questions about construction of a race car, or anything about this unique event, please

contact me, Perry Dawes, and I will be glad to assist you in any way I can. My email is:

[email protected] and my phone is 402-690-7979. LET’S RACE!!!

Dear Pete & Terri

I wanted to express my gratitude to you, your wife and Discount Tire. Saturday after the second event for Low

Speed Autocross at Summer Festival, we broke for lunch. When I returned, I noticed my rear driver tire pressure

seemed low. I discovered was at 18 psi. I tried to add air to no avail. You and others came over to assist and found

a large bolt firmly lodged in the middle of my tire. Obviously at this point, I was unable to race on that tire. You

quickly called a store to see if they could fix or replace the tire.

Next, your wife volunteered to drive me to the store in tandem, ensuring I arrived safely. Once there, it was

determined that the tire could not be fixed, and there was nothing in stock to fit the Corvette. They could not take

the chance of taking off the tire and not being able to fix and then I would be stuck. Hanging my head, I drove back

to Elkhorn. My husband called to offer any services he could provide to help get back into the races tomorrow. I

said, if you could find a way to get the old tires back on the car that would be great, knowing on Labor Day

weekend that would be next to impossible. He called Discount Tire at 168th and Maple and they said as long as

we were there before 5 they could see what could be done.

Walter drove to Tekamah and picked up my old tires in the hopes that they could, in a pinch, replace the existing

tires. Meanwhile, I drove to Discount Tire and was met by a very pleasant man stating Walter had informed him of

my dilemma. They, all four of the employees, jumped to work, aligning, lifting the car onto the hoist, and taking off

the tire to examine and determine if it could be repaired. Just then Walter arrived with the tires. The gentleman

came back to the front and said it could be fixed.

The bolt had entered the tire at a perfect angle to not cause any damage. They brought us back to view the bolt

and hole and explained how it could have been much worse and how they were going to repair the damage. In a

matter of minutes, they had the tire repaired and in the water to be sure there was no leak. All the while, they were

busy closing up shop and stopping to chat and keep me comforted.

Once complete, they asked me to drive it out because they did not want to get the inside dirty, how thoughtful. I

tried to pay or give them a little something since they rushed and could have turned me away. They smiled, said no

thank you and stated they were just happy that I could get back to racing on Sunday. These gentlemen rose above

a couple of other stores I visited on the way back home and did so without hesitation.

Discount Tire is one of our sponsors and I am glad to have them support our club. From the first phone by Pete

and throughout the ordeal, they were helpful, sincerely wanting to help and get me back on the road. In addition,

the Discount Tire at 120 & Dodge, the place I originally purchased the tires two months ago, called and stated he

ordered me a new tire to replace the patched one. I don't know if I'll need it because, the patch worked great for the

High-Speed Autocross and left me with no tire worries for the day.

Thanks for listening,

Lauren Killam

Where you been lately?

On roads less traveled of course.

All the stories you are about to read are true, some of the names have been changed

to protect the innocent. First let’s all thank Bob and Barb Redmond for arranging an

amazing trip. You can’t imagine all the work that went into fulfilling our dreams in

Colorado. Great job to both of you. Next, let me thank Bob Edmondson for insisting

that Carolyn and he go on this trip. I know the experience did her good. She had a

smile on her face all the time, except when she ate those bitter dill pickles. Lastly,

what fun it was to have Francis and Karla Richmond along with us, I heard Francis say

that they have more fun with our club members than they do with theirs. We’ve got

room for more.

Our first stop was in Red Cliff, Colorado. My Garmin told me to hang a left in 500

feet. All I could see was the side of a mountain. All of a sudden, a hole appeared,

and I drove thru it, down a goat path to our

hotel. A very nice hotel, great coffee, excellent mattresses, quaint little

town. Had tire pressure problems all week but not as bad as Rick

Harshbarger’s. He and Joan got a big screw in one of their tires. Not to

worry, got it fixed by the town plumber, welder, mortician, deputy

sheriff and town drunk, all the same guy.

Met 4 couples at the West Side Café in Vail Monday morning for

breakfast. Dave & Karen Williams, Randy & Johnny Lynn Williams, Steve &

Nancy Bronner, and Francis & Karla Richmond. Steve & Nora Wright found

out that they couldn’t fill their gas tank that morning cause the access

door wouldn’t open. Steve Bronner suggested that he open it with a

screw driver and Nancy said, oh Steve. That isn’t what she said but kids

might read this article. After driving to Colorado Springs, two days later

and $350.00, they got their gas access door fixed.

Saw the sights Monday and ate at the Minturn Saloon for dinner. No dancing

girls though. Sandy Swift took lots and lots of pictures. Went to Marble

Colorado, guess what they produce there! On to Hotchkiss Colorado for lunch,

sounds like that’s all we did was eat. Traveled down the million-dollar highway

to Durango. Checked into the Best Western Rio Grand hotel. Free breakfast,

free drinks, what a country. Some of us ate at the Ore house that night. Get

your mind out of the gutter.

Wednesday was the highlight of the trip. Took a bus to a remote train station and boarded the Silverton Railroad.

We sat across from a lady who had two autistic young men. One

was quiet and shy, the other one was, let’s just say, everyone

knew he was on the train. A young lady had taken everyone’s

picture upon departure, and planned on selling them later. Every

ten minutes he would loudly ask his mother when she was going

to buy him the family portrait. I could tell she wasn’t going to

because of the expense. After hours of his insisting, I took up a

collection from our members in our car and presented the

Page 14: Contents...The Miles for Madonna is being held September 22 at Zorinski, come out and support Gene as he runs/walks/crawls to raise money for Madonna Rehabilitation Center. Feel like

Page | 14 September 2018

money to her so she could buy the snapshot. Perry & Linda Dawes, Howard & Sharon Renshaw, Jerry & Kathy

Koraleski, Harvey & Jo Ann Leners and the Gau’s were instantly his best friends. I told

the young man that the Cornhusker Corvette Club members bought his photo, that

made his day. Then the Corvette questions started. And, he was loaded for bear.

Jerry counted how many times another kid went up and down the isle, he

stopped counting at 21. There must have been a good looking girl up there.

Arrived in Silverton after hours of beautiful scenery, once again ate. This time at the

Three Pitts, once featured on the hit show, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. After

shopping in Silverton, the train turned around and went back down the tracks. Jerry and Harvey took naps.

Another night in Durango, free drinks and breakfast. Left for Telluride the next morning, a few cars went thru

Mesa Verde National Park. Ron & Colleen Norgard’s idea, a good one too. Saw the cave dwellings. Unbelievable

sight. Mike & Vickie Manley ran over a coyote, well almost.

George and Carolyn Horst, with George driving, got a

speeding ticket, well almost. He deserved one. He was

doing 65 in a 35. Cop saw him but decided to let him go.

He was just trying to catch up, that’s his story. Met the rest

of our group in Telluride. Lunch at a yuppie restaurant, here

we go again, eating. Most of us remembered to pay for our

parking spaces. Protect the innocent, remember. Kathy

and I decided to indulge in an ice cream cone for dessert.

When I asked how much, thinking 5 or 6 bucks, I was informed the bill was $14.22. I said what!!!!!! Yeah she said,

this is our slow time of the year.

Paula Ebel and Lois Waterman won the award for seeing the most

wildlife on the way to Ouray. An entire herd of Elk, and a mountain

lion close by. Hey, I just report what I heard. Drove thru the San

Juan mountains on the way to Ouray. Stayed at the Hot Springs

hotel that night. What a wonderful place. Bob saved the best for

last. Two huge king beds in each room, only used one. Every room

was decorated western style. Very cool.

Friday morning the group split up, some going to Vetts on the Rockies, where

Bob and Carolyn Reade’s Spiderman car and Pat and Sandy Swift’s retro were

quite a hit. Some cars went thru the Utah National Park and some of us, with

George’s insistence, went to Grand Junction to Puffer Belly’s restaurant for giant

cinnamon rolls. Well worth the trip huh Jerry?

Koraleski’s, Renshaw’s and Gau’s left from there to drive all the way home, anybody surprised? Stopped in North

Platte for a hamburger at Runza. Don’t ask about going the

wrong way on a one-way street. Names have been changed

to protect the innocent.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip and I would recommend it

to anyone who hasn’t gone. Thanks again to Bob and Barb.

Job well done.

ZORA

GM Trademarks the Mid-Engine Corvette Name of ZORA

Across the World…Including China! By Keith Cornett Aug 20, 2018

It looks like the flow of

information from Government

sources from around the

world are helping Corvette

enthusiasts pinpoint potential

markets for the C8 Mid-

Engine Corvette. We recently

detailed some of the new

aero techologies found from

the US Patent Office.

Previously, official trademark registrations filed by GM have long pointed to the name of

“ZORA”, in honor of first Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov who championed a

mid-engine Corvette design for nearly his entire career at GM.

The last we heard on the trademark scene was that final approval for a trademark in

Australia for the Corvette’s crossed-flags badge. It had previously been delayed as Aussie

officials complained of the crossed-flags too closely resembling the official Red Cross seal.

Here’s an new update on the trademark front and it sure looks like GM is keeping their

trademark lawyers busy! A member of the MidEngineCorvetteForum.com named “Quinten”

tells us that he’s found the ZORA trademark everywhere. Here’s what he writes:

A dozen minutes spent looking up trademarks can go a long way. GM has trademarked

ZORA, spelt (sic) in capital letters only, in a plethora of countries worldwide. The United

States, United Kingdom, European Union, China, Japan, Korea, and Australia are the most

notable countries/unions in which the trademark is registered.

This could very well be nothing more than a precautionary measure on GM’s part in the

case that they decide to offer ZORA in International markets. However, an image(below)

Page 18: Contents...The Miles for Madonna is being held September 22 at Zorinski, come out and support Gene as he runs/walks/crawls to raise money for Madonna Rehabilitation Center. Feel like

Page | 18 September 2018

was included in the Chinese and Korean ZORA trademark files and it may reveal the font in

which this name is represented on the vehicle and in marketing campaigns.

Sure enough, we went looking for the Chinese registration and found it here:

Page | 19 September 2018

We reached out to some font gurus who believe this ZORA is Times New Roman. Most likely

not the font that will be used for any badging.

Quinten also suggested that maybe GM would use a stylized version of Zora’s signature

which is very recognizable in the hobby. Here’s Zora’s signature as an example:

I for one am really hoping the ZORA name is presented somehow on the C8 mid-engine

Corvette. Zora worked tirelessly to build a production mid-engine sports car and it would be

a great way to recognize and introduce the first chief engineer to a whole new fan base.

The Mid-Engine Corvette Forum

The new MidEngineCorvetteForum.com has already established itself as being a great

resource for all the latest C8 news, rumors and more. There are some very knowledgeable

enthusiasts who have taken up residence on the new forums and I learn something new

about the next Corvette just about every day! Come check it out for yourself!

Corvette Models for Sale

Hello, I'm Virgil Stanbary from Burlington Iowa. I am an

N.C.C.C. member and wanted to let your club know that I am

a model car vendor and set up at various toy shows. I will be

at BJSA building, 1001 High School Drive, Bellevue NE on

Saturday October 6th, 9am-3pm. ($3 entrance fee) I will be

selling two tables of nothing but Corvette models and other

Vette collectibles. I have postcards and an original GM press

release for the '78 Pace Car. I know many Vette owners like to

have a model of their "baby" and this could be their chance

to pick one up. If you would like any additional information,

please feel free to contact me at any time.

I have a few die-cast kits, but mostly unbuilt plastic model kits

going back to 1960. (Will have an original AMT 1960 Vette

model that was released in 1960 and has NEVER been

opened. Still has the factory tape on the box ends. Also have

the very first model that MPC produced. It is stock #1, a 1964

Corvette coupe (released in 1964) and it is still in factory

shrink-wrap! If you make it to the show - please introduce

yourself. Some of my rarer kits are kind of pricey, but others I

will deal on. Just to let you know, there is a $3.00 charge to

get in the door. I'm including a few pics of my built Vettes

and promos. See you on the 6th!

Thanks for your time, Sincerely

Virg, e-mail [email protected]
