A Brief History of American Legion Post 162 Lorton VA

In October 1933, a group of young Veterans, met in a room over the Post Office

at Lorton, which at that time was known as Springman’s Store. These veterans

decided to form an American Legion Post. A temporary Charter was applied for

at Department Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. The application was

approved by the Department of Virginia, and on November 13th, 1933 Pohick

Post #162, the American Legion began operating under a Temporary Charter.

Mr. Edwie Welsh was elected the first Commander for the years 1933-1934.

Permission was obtained through the kindness of one of the members on the

school board to hold our monthly meetings in the old Lorton School House; we

were later allowed to use the new school.

In July 1938, a resolution was presented and adopted to change the name of

Pohick Post #162, to Lorton Post #162. A permanent charter was also applied

for and granted at this time.

In the fall of 1938 a resolution was passed that the Post pay $2.50 for a

Charter for the Ladies Auxiliary, A permanent charter was issued on January

9th, 1939 for the Ladies Auxiliary.

The Lorton Post Home was dedicated on June l4, 1952. In September 1968 the

Post applied for and received a permit to add on to the original building.

Prior to 1952 the Post was in the midst of erecting a new building. Mr. And

Mrs. Bodanheiner donated the land to the Legion and the right of way by our

departed comrade Herbert Harr. Fred Stevens, Commander 1952-1953, was

the first Commander to hold a meeting in our new building. In 1954 the post

was operating under the debt of $5,000.00 and mortgaged to a non-member of

the post. The Executive Committee proposed a motion and it passed to sell 50

non-interest bearing certificates at $100.00 each, in order to raise $5,000.00 to

pay off the mortgage and retain title to the property. All 50 were sold and the

members who purchased the certificates were reimbursed when the post got

out of debt.

In 1960 the Personal Property Disposal Office, U.S. Naval Weapons Plant,

Washington, D.C. was contacted to procure one Torpedo Mark 15, Mod 3

equipped with a plastic loaded warhead, to display in front of the Post Home.

On June 29th, 1961 it was delivered to the Post from the U.S. Naval Weapons

Station, Yorktown, Virginia. (The only thing remaining today is the plastic

loaded warhead located in front of the caboose) In 1961 Joe and Emma

Shortsleeve compiled the first written history of Post 162.

In June 2014, Patricia Veld became the first female veteran to be elected Post

Commander, this milestone was achieved just a few years after Past Post

Commander Samuel S. Ramseur became the first African-American Post

Commander elected in 2007.

David Wallace became the Commander on June 4th, on what would become a

year of financial turmoil. Despite all the speedbumps along the way, Post 162

was able to forge ahead and be successful.

Post 162 Annual Picnic 2016

Immediately after the POW/MIA Ceremony started the annual Picnic, It was a

bit overcast, but the rains managed to pass us. The “Pig Man” prepared a fine

spread of food, from Pulled Pork, hamburgers, hot dogs, to Macaroni and

Cheese and baked beans. Department Membership Chair Bob Brady and Past

17th District Commanders Robert Renner, Ray Lockett and our own Sam

Ramseur were in attendance. The event was a family affair with lots of

children playing games, prizes and good food. September 10, 2016 was

another in a long line of successful Open House/Picnics!

Boys and Girls State Recognition Dinner

On Aug 25th, Post 162 welcomed eight Boys and two Girls State

delegates and their families to a dinner ceremony to honor their

accomplishments both at Boys and Girls State and in their schools

and communities. This was a significant occasion for one of our

most important Legion programs which brought together over 40

friends, families, and school counselors from our four local area

high schools. The families of our delegates enjoyed a superb

program of events accompanied by a delicious meal prepared by

Auxiliary Unit 162. This event combined the efforts of both our

Auxiliary and SAL members and culminated into a truly memorable

night for all. Our guests offered plenty of praise, gratitude, and

appreciation to our Post and the American Legion. We clearly left an

indelible mark on them and, more importantly, served to remind

them that their American Legion is there to carry on the legacy of

Americanism, God, and Country.

Post 162 Oratorical Contest

Despite the blustery weather, sheets of ice on the roads, and

numerous vehicle acci-dents, Post 162 conducted an Oratorical

contest on Saturday, Dec 17th. Three judges watched and listened

intently as Ryan Huck spoke eloquently on the virtues and values

embedded in our Constitution and its Amendments. The message, as

our Constitution came alive in our banquet hall, was both powerful

and moving to hear. We heard weighty declarations on our right to

have a trial by jury, powers reserved to the States, and Congress’

ability to lay and collect taxes. For those of us in the audience it was

a valuable reminder on why our Constitution remains such a tour de

force.

Special Presentation of Recognition and Legionnaire of the Year 2017

The Lucian Butler Scholarship is given each year to those high school seniors

who have shown great merit in the spirit of the American Legion and its

programs. Lorton Post 162 had three Lucian Butler Scholarship award

recipients: Patrick Sansone, Dominic Mancini, and Carter Engvall. This may be

the first time three scholarship award winners came from the same post. All

three are members of the Sons Of The American Legion Squadron 162.

Congratulations.

We also took time to recognize 1st Vice Commander Rodman Sansone as the

Legionnaire of the Year for 2016/17. Normally the award is presented at the

Officers Installation, however Rod and his son Patrick had to make a special

trip to The University of Notre Dame in South Bend Indiana. Patrick will be

attending Notre Dame as his college of choice. Patrick Sansone has been

selected for the SAL Detachment Of Virginia Scholarship.
