Office of the

President

As the New Year breaks - cold and snow around – we start wondering

how soon we can get those Corvettes out and running. Soon it will be

spring and our Board of Directors has been hard at work planning the year’s

social and racing schedules.

A lot of thought – planning and discussion goes into each function. The

board is working hard to get a balance of road trips – Meet & Greets –

Funkhana – Rallies – Autocross – Car shows and maybe even some drag

racing.

I want to again thank all of those that served on the board in 2017. They made it a fun and event filled year. This

year we have a few new board members that will add a new mix to the events. I am looking forward to all the fun and

exciting things they will be making part of our activities this year. Each year the club seems to be getting better and

better. That is because of the contributions of previous board members and the input of those that are added. The club

members are a big part of this as well. Several club members have suggested activities they would like to see the club

do. I would continue to ask each club member to make suggestions.

Those Corvettes may be in storage and under covers, they may be in a shop getting tuned up for racing and they

may be dusty and cold. But it won’t be long before we hear the motor turn over – the roar of the exhaust - the clutch

engage and the tires getting traction. We will be off to enjoy the car – the event and the day with our fellow Corvette

owners. Plan to come along and share in the fun!

President,

Kevin Reit

If Kevin had picked the car instead of Elan Musk.

From the

Governor’s desk…

As winter drags on the hardy continue our existence in the frigid Nebraska

winter while the lucky board cruises and slip down to the gulf coast to ease winters

bite. Yet one thing we have in common is our cars nestled in the garages and

storage areas to await the spring. As your new Governor, I am learning first hand

that this club doesn’t sleep through the winter but uses the winter to recharge,

celebrate the past year and plan for warmer weather and the next year.

In coordination with Don Angeroth, Competition Director, the social committee and Pete Fagan,

Summer Festival Director, we are planning a season that truly will have something for everyone. From

sanctioned car shows, to high and low speed autocross, a Funkhana, Rallyes, Valve Cover Racing, dinner and

cruise-ins at local sponsors and maybe even some non-corvette related activities. We are working to make

2018 the best year yet for Cornhusker Corvette Club.

I have been busy scrounging up sanctions for those that wish to compete regionally and nationally and

coordinating with other regional clubs to make sure that you can probably earn points on any given weekend

this summer within the Western Region. I think I will be hard pressed to find a weekend to get away, but I’ve

already promised Kelli we will find one or two that don’t involve helmets, trailers and spare tires (not to say

the Corvette has to stay home but fitting three dogs in it may be difficult :).

I encourage everyone to support the West Region Banquet on March 3rd. Show your support for the

region and meet some fellow Corvette owners from around the Midwest. Racers don’t forget to get your

number requests into the Regional Competition Director, Gary Brisbois and help support the West Region

Scholarship. And as always, watch your social calendar and don’t miss the Meet & Greets and other events the

social committee has come up with.

So “hold onto your socks” as Gene would say, this year promises to be a great one for Cornhusker

Corvette Club and truly you will find something for everyone in 2018.

P.S. I will once again be attending the NCCC Governors meeting the end of February, if you have any

questions or concerns you would like me to take to the national level, please let me know.

*** UPDATE ***

Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall

Allen H. Sohl

In the December 2017 issue of Husker News 'n Views, I explained that Kidde is recalling a large number of

potentially defective fire extinguishers. Kidde is supplying replacement fire extinguishers at no cost.

On January 6, 2018 I received my first replacement unit. It appears to be much improved. It is the same size as my old

unit, but it has several changes:

The valve is metal, not plastic.

The pin is metal, not plastic.

The mounting bracket is metal, not plastic.

The unit is rechargeable.

The recalled unit must be returned in the shipping carton. Detailed instructions are included.

I would encourage anyone who has one or more Kidde fire extinguishers that are on the recall list to request

replacements.

Now that’s funny right there…

There I was or is it, Where was I?

My Rookie Year

I know it’s been a while since most of you had a rookie year or were a new Corvette owner so I thought I

would share mine. I learned many things during my rookie year in the CCC and racing NCCC. Mostly that the

weather rarely cooperates when you’re excited about driving your car. The St Patty’s Day parade got cancelled,

because apparently the tires and cold temps don’t mix. Who knew? Not this guy that’s for sure. Terri and I were

sick during the Contributor’s Rallye but no worry, it rained like hell that day anyway. I was unable to attend Don’s

driving school because we were out of town. Again, I was bummed and I don’t think I saw a single corvette until

the first race in Lincoln. No sweat though it was foggy and cold for the first race. I think the sun finally came out

and between dodging tornadoes in Bellevue and hail storms in Papillion two weeks later we managed to find

more than a few sunny warm days and got to enjoy some of the club’s events.

We bought our car in spring of 2016 and intended it to be only a “date car” for us. We didn’t really know

much about Corvettes yet and enjoyed the stock ride for that first summer. I know I started this by saying “we” as

I really wanted it for both of us but let’ be honest, I did most of the driving and by the time it was finally put it into

storage for the deep sleep of winter I think I put 5000miles on it. Now my Chevy pickup, which had never spent a

night out in the cold, was pushed aside and found itself third wheel out in the elements for the winter.

Page 10: Contents...Past/present club pictures: *** UPDATE *** Kidde Fire Extinguisher Recall Allen H. Sohl In the December 2017 issue of Husker News 'n Views, I explained that Kidde is recalling

During that first winter as I would walk through the garage to my pick-up, I’d see the cool car there with a

cover on it, lift the skirt to peak at it from time to time, run the engine, turn the tires, and then realize that a man

can really miss a car. Again, who knew?

I realized we needed some corvette friends so I would know who to go to for maintenance and

accessories in the local area. I finally found this club and being a typical male, afraid of commitment, I debated

spending the money to join the club. That was by far the best decision made in 2017. We were in good hands

with Chris Tooker and it all started with our first Meet & Greet last Feb, a meeting and O’Reilly’s World of Wheels

lead by Chris Tooker but this time he was wearing a green suit reminiscent of “The Riddler” from the original

Batman series. I quickly realized this bunch is full of the friendliest group of folks this side of the nut house.

About that time I started to notice what I liked and didn’t like about the car. Did I mention the car would

only be for date nights? Yeah right, commence with the upgrades! I’m a bit of an audiophile and noticed this

really cool car had a lousy sound system, so that was the first upgrade. I ripped out the entire interior and rebuilt

the sounds system from soup to nuts. I noticed the wheel paint was chipping and then realized it would look

better with drilled and slotted brake and rotors. Any performance benefits were bonus, not that “we” would

need them. Later in the summer came new chrome wheels and Borla exhaust system. The car was just too quiet

and I was very happy to realize Terri liked the new sound. YES!

As we were introduced at our first meeting Theresa Eller yelled at me from across the room and that

planted the first thought about racing this beautiful car. ”Nah, I don’t want to mess it up” I thought, “I really don’t

want to race it” I thought. Yeah right. Unfortunately, my medical issues now prohibit me from flying, something

I’d spent most my life learning and perfecting as my profession. I miss it every day, it’s a real bummer sometimes

but it didn’t take long to fill that void with racing. I learned a lot from the likes of Ray Kennedy, Larry Lichtenwald,

Don Angeroth and the lot. I learned Ray Kennedy will be off the track at least once every race, Ron Hernandez will

do a 360 with style, Tim Ogle can drive the hell out of his car and there are plenty of ladies that will give us men a

run for our money. These people will do anything for a fellow corvette owner. To my shock, Dave Hemphill even

loaned me a set of autocross tires one Sunday, when I got a screw in mine so I wouldn’t miss any events that day.

I raced that car all summer and into the fall. I found I craved it, looked

forward to the next race and lamented the ones early in the season that I elected not

to attend. There were times I was less interested in my time than making the corner

workers run. One time I even came to a dead stop, backed up went around the cone

and continued. Dummy! As I passed Kevin at the next corner I was laughing and

yelled, “You’re Welcome.” By the end of the season I had a blast, so much fun in fact

that I won rookie of the year. Yay Me! But that wasn’t the best part of the year. The best was the wonderful new

group of friends that I made in this marvelous club. You all are the reason that makes us want to come to the

socials, meetings, car shows, races, Summer Festival, etc. Terri has said more than once that she is glad I bought

that car and joining this club is a key part of that comment.

Somewhere in there Ron Hernandez nominated me for about 7 different club positions. I only have two

for the moment but he keeps trying. An old adage comes to mind, “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

I still miss flying, I miss driving my car and can’t wait for those warmer days. This winter it’s new shocks

and sway bars as I look forward to another year with a great group of folks. It feels more like family than what I

thought a club would.

Thanks for a great year & Save the Wave,

Pete Fagan
